Mizuno MP 20 MMC vs MP 20 HMB

I play the MP20 MMC in 6-P and have a 5 iron in the HMB and 4 iron MMC Fli-Hi. All have Modus 120 stiff, 1/2 over and 2 degrees up, so a fair comparison. I would say feel when pured would go to the MP20 MMC, marginally in front of the Fli-Hi then the HMB. They all feel amazing, and are extremely consistent. I think I could play both a full set of both HMB and MMC. Tried the MB which was also fantastic, but I definitely agree with the comments above on the feel and consistency of all three models. Confidence inspiring without being too chunky/offset. Seriously considering an HMB or Fli Hi 2 iron with an AD-DI 95 shaft.

Both aren’t easy irons to hit by any means.

I do agree with most that the HMB launch a touch higher. I found the HMB was much more useful in the 4 irons especially when you consider approach shots from 200+ yard out.

I would say the MMC nor HMB were Mizuno’s best feeling irons.

Compared to other hollow heads, don’t expect the HMB to be distance irons.

I have played mizuno irons for several years. I am a 0 handicap. Comparing the Mizuno 18 mmc vs mp 20 mmc, the mp20 look and feel better but I found them to be like the blades in terms of forgiveness. The mp 18 mmc are much more forgiving and powerful. At best, the forgiveness of the mp 20 mmc would be comparable to the mp 18 sc.

I’d have to respectfully disagree about the forgiveness. I’ve played the MP 18 blades, SC, and MMC along with the MP 20 Blades, HMB, and now the MMCs. I definitely find both generations of the MMCs rather forgiving for their size. Especially low and toe side. However I feel there is almost no difference between the 18s and the 20s in the MMC line. The 20s might get through the turf a little cleaner though. Most importantly though, they look better!

First time I’m reading about flyers off HMBs. Anyone else had this happen? Curious.

I too have noticed some jumpers off the HMB long irons. 5 iron is 190. I have mine been a little week. I occasionally have it fly 210. I guess there may be a hot spot on the face? I’ve had that with the JPX lines as well. I will probably be sticking with the 2 iron but may combo in the MMCs with the blades. Or just go all MMCs. They are really the best of both worlds.

Thanks. I’m planning on a new combo set of MP-20, and have gone back and forth regarding the makeup. Currently, I had only one HMB planned (3i), but this is not good news. Might stay with a hybrid for now.

I would consider what you would primarily be using the 3 iron for. If you use it as a fairway finder off the tee I would highly recommend it. If your going to be using it into a lot of greens than you may still want to try it for your self. Also if your a very consistent ball striker than you may have less issues. They really are great clubs. I’d be more concerned gaming a whole set.

I have the MP-18 Fli Hi 2i for off the tee. The 3i would be more of an approach club when I need to cover that distance. I have a very high ball flight so an iron is preferred. Looks cooler in the bag, too.

I just ordered a set of 6-P MMC and 4-5 HMBs. I wanted the extra height on the longer irons. Like others, the fitting cart only had 7 irons, so time will tell if I made the correct choice.

But I've got to say, the MMC are incredible performers. I'm coming from a set of i210's and the feel is just... wow.

I tried 921 forged and they just didn't work for me.  Im hitting i20s and was looking at i210s or the mp 20 mmc and hmbs.

What do you like about them over the i210s?

I think the jumper is when you actually hit one dead flush in the spot.

How do the Fli hi and HMB compare with respect to launch angle and forgiveness? (Ideally the 2-iron...)

MMC is cleaner, thinner topline, thinner sole, and offers much better feel (more buttery, less dead) compared with HMB. More consistent numbers as well. Overall distance is similar (lofts are the same) and HMB gives some added forgiveness, which is nice at the very top of the bag. I think a whole set of HMBs would work fine but wouldn't be very satisfying.

I guess I’m the outlier here. I liked the HMB’s better than the MMC.

they performed pretty much identical, but I liked the look and feel of the HMB’s better.  I found them to launch and spin within 1/2* and 150 rpms when I tested them. I’m a pretty good ball striker, and was flushing both of them........ other than looks, I’d be hard pressed to tell which one I hit if blindfolded. although, I only hit a 7 iron and a 4 iron in both...... I hit the 6 and wedge in the HMB’s to get a feel for a possible blended set of MP 20 blades in the 8-PW. I found the HMB’s were the right fit with the right shaft. I did have them swingweighted to D5 after further testing.

I haven't hit the HMB 2 iron but my buddy has a Fli HI MP 18 2 iron shafter with an AD-DI 95 shaft which is well balanced and great tee iron.  They're both solid, Fli Hi slightly moreso, and equivalent in forgiveness.  One is not marginally better than the other.  I think whichever one you like the look of better.

Gaming 2iron and 4-6 in MP20 HMB and 7-PW MB for just over a year now.
With more than a year of play, if I had my time again, I’d probably swap out the 5 & 6 HMB’s for MMC’s.

The only reason would be the height/flight difference between the 6 & 7 irons.
I have no issues with distance or feel, but playing most of my golf on a links course with quite a bit of wind, I think the MMC’s would be much better suited.
Best irons I’ve ever owned !!

I have full set of HMB, can’t help but notice that they fly what seems to be too high (to my eye, I am also a high launch/spin player) and may be losing distance?! Obviously it’s colder outside too so that could come into play. I have thought about getting a set of MMC but wasn’t sure how much difference there would be in forgiveness?!

I found no difference in flight or forgiveness. They are lofted the same. When I tested the MMC and HMB (4 iron and 7 iron in both.) I found the difference in launch to be 1/3* and 100-150rpm spin.

Since I liked the HMB more in looks, I hit more of them and decided against a MMC/HMB combo. I didn’t see any difference, or benefit.

I was going to purchase the 921F when my fitter put the HMB in my hand although I didn't look at the label when he gave it to me and did not mention the model. I experienced better dispersion and similar numbers as the 921F. He did not put the MMC in my hand. Reading posts and Mizuno's description of the MMC, it seemed more iron than I needed, although I could probably handle 8-PW. But I believe in playing the most forgiving iron you can still love to look at ... HMB is fairly handsome.

The ball flight is not too high and I found the 5-6i easier to hit consistently  than the 919F on the range. If I need to lower the ball flight, I can use the B-Stone XS instead of the RXS.

Love the feel of the HMBs - paired with Accra i95 Constant Weight.

Food for thought. I went with a combo set of the 921 Tours and HMB. I found the tours to be more similar to the MP 18 SC that I am coming from.  The tours gave me the desired flight and consistency.  Blended the set at p-7 921 Tour and 6-4 HMB.  I felt that the hmb performed better for me than the forged.  Just an idea.  Mizuno makes it easy to combo everything.

Background-I needed the extra launch/height in the longer irons and the HMB seemed to fit that mold the best for me.
