New Hogan iron

Recommended Posts

How did you go about acquiring this custom combo set?

Unfortunately the Icon/PTx Pro break at 8/7i is not negotiable (or not obviously so). In this sense the set is the Hogan version of the Titleist 735CM, Nike Pro Combo, etc. It is a great option for the right player and was a true epiphany in 2005, but hardly revolutionary now. This makes sense for Hogan: having so many combo options would create supply chain issues and give their low price, direct-to-consumer model fits, i.e. lots of extra 6 and 7 irons sitting around in the warehouse unsold. As for me, I was standing on the range the other day thinking "That slightly thin/toe-y 8 iron might end up closer to the target if I had some more forgiveness in the scoring clubs. I should give performance irons a shot." So I might demo the PTx Pro and see how the scoring clubs feel.

+1 the blade on blade design is literally Hogans signature design feature. Despite Koehlers attempts to say otherwise the Ft. Worth Hogans had nothing in common design wise with Ben Hogan's designs. Koehler just stuck the Hogan name on irons based off his wedge Scor wedges.

I bought a set of Ft Worth 15 down in Myrtle Beach at PGA superstore while on vacation 3 years ago. This was right when they went through bankruptcy and instead of being $1100, I paid $350 for the set 4-p. The guy at PGA superstore said they had been on the rack for about an hour and they had some joking bets on how long they’d last at that price.

Then, in January 2018, I won the PTx irons here in the Tour and Pre release section when Hogan did a giveaway with WRX for a set. I reshafted and combined them shortly after and haven’t looked back

Absolutely true. This is one reason I was not remotely interested in the Scor inspired Hogan design. The new Icon has dna from a true Hogan past. That I am interested in.

I won the PTx Pros on here last year. I put my shafts from my old set in them, and they're not going anywhere anytime soon. I may buy a blended set from Hogan to have when my PTx Pros finally need to be replaced.

They look so good. If I needed new irons right now, I’d be buying the Hogan combo. There’s no question.

How do the Pros compare to the originals? Size? Forgiveness? Etc

I can't compare forgiveness between the two sets of irons. I never hit the originals. One of my first times out with the PTx Pros, I played with a guy at my local course that had (and still has) the original PTx irons. I let him hit mine, and he liked the feel of them better than the originals. They looked smaller to me from looking at his irons in the bag, but I don't think I compared them directly side-by-side.

I did try the Ft. Worth irons a few times, and liked them a lot. I just knew they weren't going to be forgiving enough for me and how often I play. The new combo set would give me the best of both worlds.

Great Options and the UiHi is a pretty good looking utility.

I will be interested in the full set images when people get some.

Too bad you cannot build your own set. Buy them as individual irons.

At least the price is low enough that you can break into a custom shaft and not be too expensive.

I was really hoping they would name it Hi-con. I said the same thing on their FB page last night and they deleted the comment...thought that was kinda weird.

It seems to be more of a PTX-Pro design, so maybe the hi-con is a future plan? Either that or your idea just got stolen. ;)

It might be. This iron has the design elements that made Ben Hogan company. I will play with the KBS Tour V shafts I had chosen to see whether they work for me or not. I am currently gaming Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff shafts in my '99 Apex irons. I have a set of pulled Nippon Modus3 105 stiff shafts to try if I really dislike the KBS Tour V shaft. Once I decide on what to use then BestGrips Augusta Microperf grips go on.

For those that have hit the ICON's and PTx what are the main differences? Is the feel the same? I like the top line of the ICON over the PTx but also way less offset on the ICON. I have their demo PTx right now along with the FT Worth Hi Utility. Really liking both currently and they did not have the ICON's to demo is why i am asking.

I ordered them on March 18th. Generally the Ben Hogan company says about 2 weeks from order to shipping but with the recent shutdown there was nothing anyone could do. It's taken about a week since Texas started to open up until shipment. No worries, I still have my '99 Apex blades.

Well, while we’re at it, I’d like to hear more of your impressions of the PTX if it’s the Pro. My self-analysis is that, as much as I like the look of the Icon, the PTx Pro looks really good too and I’d like to know the performance and playability differences between the models in 8-P. I‘m not a likely candidate for a full set of Icons. Scoring irons I can play most clubs. The Icons are eye-catching. They also look like they could be moderately demanding. I did demo the Ft. Worths in 2015 and something about them just didn’t work for me. I thought they were either too small or the weighting felt off, whatever. Could not hit them consistently well or for good distance.

I owned the original PTx I picked up second-hand and I hit those well. I thought they were really nice irons, liked the sound a lot, though I never warmed to the S300 AMT shaft. Felt like work.

I also liked the changes they made in releasing the PTx Pro the more I looked at it. It appears a little more forgiving and slightly larger hitting area. It seemed odd at first they called it the Pro model, but in looking at the Hogan lineup now it obviously was a course correction on returning to designs that look like Hogans. They probably could have named it something else because it can stand on its own. I am not anti-offset. I prefer modest to medium offset, on the Pro that is in my range. I could see playing the new utility at 5 iron regardless if it’s not a clunky sole design. It looks good. I’m just so happy to be part of a discussion about the high quality of Ben Hogan Golf’s lineup now. It’s pretty cool. They have made a nice comeback.
