Someone needs to manufacture the old Apex shafts exactly like they were. Best feeling shafts ever.

Makes sense! I recently hit the PTX Pro’s and absolutely loved them. May look into a combo set if possible or see if there is a big performance difference between the 2

No, they were different. I would not be able to explain how. But they were different. The apex 5 are unicorn status.

Exactly. In the latter days of Hogan as a brand, the Apex shaft became a True Temper product and was said to essentially be the Dynalite shaft. Prior to 2000, or the late 90s, the Apex shaft may have been manufactured by Royal Precision, and may have been similar to the stepped Precision shaft, if not actually the Precision shaft.

Prior to the emergence of the Precision shaft, I'm not sure who manufactured the Apex shaft.

According to legend, it was Brunswick that made apex shafts pre-Royal Precision, which would be interesting, seeing as in the 80's Hogan was an AMF property, so you would have Brunswick products labled AMF.

I actually have a 99 Apex 2 iron one of our fellow WRXers from Canada set me that head 3 or 4 years ago> He sent me the head and I installed a S-300 untipped. Still hit it on occasion. Can not hit one like I used to but can still hit it.

I purchased a 2 iron head on eBay the last week. The seller has not put it in the mail yet. I have contacted him and no response whatsoever. I believe I have a couple days before the anticipated arrival date passes. At that point I will file a complaint with eBay, get my money back and leave a negative feedback. I looked at his account and he has 2 negative feedbacks pertaining to golf clubs for exactly what he is doing in my case. I hate sellers like this.

I hate people like that which are a common thief IMHO---- One of the reasons I do not do a whole lot with Flea Bay anymore---- If I know the seller either by previous contact or another WRXer says they are ok then I will push the button

There are some protections and the cost of the 2 irons was not much. That said, I know I will recoup the price but it's the breach of contract that I am irritated with. It is the lack of communication on the seller's part that I am really irritated about.

My understanding is that Apex shafts were made by True Temper but the frequency matched or "FM" are made by Brunswick/Royal Precision. In both, they have a custom step pattern.

So they might have used Dynalite's or Precision's but Hogan specified the tip flex which happened to be slightly softer and actually made classic blades more usable and enhances their enjoyment & performance.

I own both and both shafts are true to their lineage. The '94 fort Worth's feel very DG in nature, the '99's feel very Precision FM too.

Just got some lefty PTX’s and they are glorious both in look and performance for me. Would totally play these new ones if offered for southpaws, but right now just honeymooning hard with the PTX model.

If they are anything like the ft worth’s they are definitely a easier bladed club to hit than others. Had a couple sets of those and always liked them but I need to swing it a little better and faster to always play them. There is a lot of talk of a blended set of some kind coming so may be better to wait on these.

Seems very similar. A blade on blade on blade on blade design. The Icon just has its second flange continue off the club instead of rejoining the muscle pad.

One thing I realized looking at these pictures; newHogan does not stamp the club name on the sole, which they did for every model of Apex after the first one. Now that I mention it, do any oem's today stamp anything on the sole besides #/loft?

Wish I could stop drooling over these, I have no business playing blades. But I’ve always had a soft spot for Hogan, as my first set of adult clubs were Hogan Bounce Sole 1+ with Apex 3 shafts. Also had a set of Hogan persimmon woods with the speed slot. Just beautiful clubs.

If these Icon irons are as forgiving as the '99 Apex blade, or close to them, they will be a terrific iron for even mid handicappers

I am a fan. I wonder if you could strip the black off with vinegar like people do with the vokey wedges and have raw heads? That could make for a cool looking set.

Sadly, nope. These are more of a DBM type finish, nothing like the finish that you're comparing them to. But, sending them to a competent club refinisher for a strip job is always an option. In fact, I'm having a set of J40 CBs stripped right now for when golf finally returns!

It would be just a nod to the Apex line, as that trademark is with Callaway. As you said we don't see much branding on the soles these days. I knind of prefer it when the digit isn't where the turf interacts and further up the toe (like we see with a few wedges).

I received an email yesterday from The Ben Hogan company stating that the irons are further delayed due to non-essential work stoppage. I replied whether the heads only could be sent and the answer was no. Oh well,

In 2002 I bought a set Apex Edge Pros with Apex 4 shafts. It was an epiphany for me as I had always played DG's before that. They felt so good I've used Apex 4 shafts in every set of irons I've played since then. Which, thankfully, has only been three sets since 2006: MacGregor 1025c's, Cleveland CG4's, and Titleist 718 AP2's. I always source a pulled set of like new Apex 4's to put in a new set of irons. I like them that much.

The Ben Hogan golf brand became an AMF property in 1960. AMF sold the Hogan brand in 1985.

They look excellent to me. I would choose the chrome finish. Means nothing because I always choose the chrome. Want to see some video reviews on performance. Hogan makes nice clubs. Have a TK 58 wedge and it is compact and nimble, reminds me size-wise of Mizuno MP67. The TK works off any lie too. A breeze off tight greenside lies.

The way they’ve designed the muscle pad on the Icon, I would bet its pretty easy to launch.
