Quantix-new DTC ball

Looks like they are based in Fort Worth. Founder is 21 and also is the COO of what looks to be a mobile game development company of which the CEO looks to be a family member. This is likely something off the shelf from one of the big Asian factories and isn’t likely to last long...http://www.wboc.com/story/41548903/fort-worth-has-its-first-new-golf-ball-company-since-ben-hogan-in-1953

A lot of these DTC companies are popping up now. Probably as a result of the Costco impact of contracting with foreign suppliers to supply balls from overstock or other means. The magic will occur when one of these companies shows a record of providing excellent quality control. That's (to me) the one area that will open the floodgates and then all 'H" will break out. It could still be Costco or another of these new companies. I can see Costco continuing to provide a good ball for a low price that will attract buyers. But if one of these new companies proves successful will they keep the price down (which attracted buyers in the first place) or will their price creep up to compare with the big boys?

After seeing the Spy Guys ball test it was amazing that even the main companies (Ca***way) sold balls with poor quality control (off center cores), at a top price. Even Ti****st balls tested less than excellent quality. In their case the ball compression had large variances in a few balls in each dozen. I don't know how this would impact playability but it shows that imperfections get through - at top price no less.

Found this on their website..

“Unlike your typical direct to consumer ball company, Quantix has a world renowned ball scientist behind the creation of our products.

We don’t just take an on “off the shelf” ball and slap our name on it. We have put massive amounts of time into R&D, not to mention we control our manufacturing process just like the big box golf ball companies.

This allows us to perfect the quality control with-in our products to give you the most consistent, and highest performing golf balls.”

I can't post the image from Instagram, but they've got a ball cut in half on their feed, and it looks an awful lot like a Bridgestone E6. Different colors, but the same thickness.

Golf balls seem to be like a gateway drug into the golf biz for some. If the plan is to expand then starting with balls is easy because its probably relatively easy to get product made with your log and packaging. If you're successful you can build some capital and seek some further investment to branch out further into hard goods. But yeah there's a glut of choices and some seem to be built around more of an image they want to project (Vice) than actual innovation or quality. And it allows someone to promote themselves as a "disruptor" which I think attracts a certain market segment.

I see where you're coming from, but generally certain brands will have thicker or thinner shells or mantles. The Quantix ball looks more like an E6 (or those Nike balls that were rebadged E6's) than it does, say a Tour 330 or a Pro V1

I bit the bullet and bought a dozen to play with. I got free two day shipping so that’s a plus. I’ll be comparing their F35 ball with the mtb-x, pro-v1, and Bridgestone tour bx. It says they will be arriving tomorrow (03/04/20). I’ll let you guys know what’s up with them. If you guys have anymore I should compare it too, let me know. (Please try to make it a ball I could pick up in a pro shop!)

Based on still having a golf ball closet full of KSigs, I'm not in on these either, however, let's not discount the benefit and impact that the DTC model is bringing to us as the consumers of golf balls. When the company who has the largest share in the golf ball industry makes an investment in this space, it's shows that there is merit in the DTC model and they've taken notice.

Just speaking from my own perspective, of course. Out of curiosity, I busted out my PVC cutter and halved some balls, and this oldish E6 (circa 2014-15) looks remarkably similar to the F35:

https://i.imgur.com/C0vmfUK.jpgAs mentioned above, the sizes of each layer is most similar...the biggest difference is the color of the core, but I also know that the color varies among different years of E6 as well.

Comparing that to a few Wilsons and Callaways that I also halved, the layer sizes are different even among their 3-piece offerings. I'm tempted to halve my Kirkland ball, but that was an on-course find and I don't want to sacrifice it to the PVC slicer just yet.

The DTC model is not the future. It is here now. You can buy any ball DTC. Go to the Titleist, TM, Srixon, etc. websites and place your order. Or go to one of the many retailer websites. Dicks, golf balls.com, PGA Superstore, etc.

The strength of the DTC companies is lower marketing expenses because of no tour presence and lower or no R&D costs. The weakness of the DTC companies is lack of tour presence and less or no R&D. Many players still want tour validation and will pay for it.

Every product has a low price market segment. The question is how many brands that segment will support. My guess is that number is lower than we currently see. The problem with price being your big selling point as new competitors come in competition on price comes in leading to lower profits leading to some companies failing. Snell is probably the best positioned at the current time. He has a great product currently. Can he keep updating and improving it to keep up with the major brands.

Apologies, I should have clarified my comments more regarding DTC and the lower price associated as related to lower costs. Of course you can buy ProV1's online for $52/dz or at Dick's for $51.99 althought it appears the PGA Tour Superstore has them around $48/dz. Here's the perceived target market for the Union Green ball and it's distribution: "The business plan is to sell almost entirely direct to consumer. Union Green will be available through a small number of shops – roughly 60 to 80 nationwide – that fit with the brand identity. If you paid an assessment this year, you’re not likely to find Union Green in your shop."

The DTC/price point combination (apologies again) is what Titleist has recognized and it's targeting this segment. No doubt the R&D/quality from Titleist will still be present, it's the lack of marketing cost through endorsements that will make the biggest difference. A couple of years ago I went through the Annual Report and shared the breakdown on the cost of the ball to a consumer. If I remember properly, it was easily $15/dz that went into marketing either through TV/digital media/print/endorsements, etc.
