Cristie Kerr Joins GOLF Channel Broadcast Team at The Honda Classic

Welcome to the group Drex......it's usually a pretty good group of mostly guys (a few gals now & then, me included). We range from rank beginners to scratch golfers, and you'll find more guys here that drive the ball over 350 yds on a regular basis, & straight too. And some of those guys claim they have only been playing golf for a couple months.

I've been a member here since 2009, and while I don't show up as often as I used to, I still lurk once in a while. Regarding Cristie Kerr.....she's okay so far. I think she's holding back now because she's afraid she'll get roasted & accused of talking too much & being too blunt (and she likes "blunt" a lot). She's got a long way to go to be as good as Dottie Pepper (who was criticized a lot when she first started out). Now she's one of the best, IMHO.

Like Henry Longhurst.

Bones Mackay caddying for 25 years for the best player on the planet not named Tiger. Seeing every shot from every lie possible by not only Phil, but nearly every player on Tour in the last 30 years.

Cristie Kerr, 20 LPGA Tour wins (including 2 Majors), former World #1 (3X), 9 time Solhiem Cup Teams (6 winning teams). I guess those aren't good enough credentials for you.

I'm aware of their respective CVs still doesn't change the fact that combined they are zero shots hit on the PGA Tour. The fact they both have zero PGA Tour experience as a player is a big minus for me and what you list of achievements, despite it being very impressive, is mostly irrelevant in my opinion.

Bones discussed and advised Phil on every shot he hit for 25 years, like 50 wins and 5 majors. He knows the keys to success at every venue and knows the game and shots of all the pros.

Its a good combination of experience for the job. Maybe better than most actual pros. He can look at any shot on any course and assess it. Heck, given Phil’s “adventurous” game, he’s seen and had to help Phil make the call on shots from all over the place. And he has probably seen every inch of every green and knows what the players are looking at from wherever they are on the green.

Once you are on here more you will see first post types who start a thread just to start some bs going. Then they leave, with their one post, and go over to a Tennis site and do the same thing. Rise repeat. Your thread ended up not being one of THOSE guys. Which is good for a change. Belated welcome to this site.

This tournament is getting very interesting. I’m not quite sure what to think of the course - it certainly is very penal. Not sure I like that water is in play on almost EVERY hole, but it does keep the pressure on every shot - there is no letup. I probably prefer the more traditionally difficult courses like Riviera (love that course and tourney), but this is very interesting to watch. A two shot lead will certainly not be safe heading into the Bear Trap. Would love to see Tommy Fleetwood get his first win today, but he’s gonna have to earn it every step of the way...

Thanks for welcomes. I actually agree with what you are saying Kaysquare about Cristie. I think she’ll end up being really good some day (and I’m glad that it looks like she has an interest in doing this after her golfing career is done) - and I love Dottie Pepper, one of my favorite commentators.

If ever there was a need for “choking freaking dogs," this back 9 is a perfect setting for it. Some serious stress happening.

Edit: and all of a sudden some clutch shots happen. These guys are good (heard that somewhere).

Edit #2: And Fleetwood and Steele just gagged it on 18. Back to the dogs.

The problem I have with most of these on course commentators is their insistence on making shot predictions, you know, to prove to us and the other announcers how smart they are.

yet they’re so often wrong. Makes them look needy.

If they only stuck to conditions facing the player and stop with the predictions, all would be good

Guaranteed to be a thread on every new golf commentator and how terrible they are.

Don't see the problem with a commentator saying the shot looks good. Personally I need no explanation that this is based on their position on the course and their perspective for a particular shot.

Even the individual who hits the shots is often confused by the result.

She did a great job, her comments were no-nonsense and generally on-track. Did you miscall a few shots? Sure, but even the players are not sure about how well a shot was hit until it landed as it was plainly obvious on their faces on several par-3 tee shots. She'll learn. Her delivery and tone was great.

They didn't seem to use her much on Sunday though. Maybe she was starting to feel the pressure. Several times an announcer tried to make light commentary with her but she went in straight for the business of describing the lie, the shot, etc. Almost too quick. I'm sure it's being nervous about saying something in a 10-sec window with people talking in your ear. She's no Maltby, but nobody is. She has a future in this if she chooses to do it.

I think it will take her a bit to calibrate the distances that the men can hit it, even when they hit it from a terrible lie. Right now it's a hobby for her. She might say it's not for her and stick to being a golfer for a while yet. Still better than Immelman and he's a "veteran."
