Has anyone added a 5 wood if so then..

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of adding a 5 wood to the bag, the question becomes then what do I get rid of? I currently have 3,4,5 irons and I hit the 5 most the time but the 3 and 4 tend to be hit less often and I do not know if its because of my lack of confidence with them or not. When I do hit my 3 and 4 my consistency is all over the place, I have not added a hybrid as I have a mental block with them as well. Smoke the 3 wood and driver so I have the gap from 3 wood to 5 iron. Thanks for any info and or suggestions.

Get a 5 wood. I have a 5 wood, but after a mental block with hybrids for years I finally added one.

Get rid of the 3 iron. Then maybe lower the loft on the 4 iron a bit. Most amateurs have too close a yardage gap on their long irons(3* of loft separation in most companies long irons). Possibly look at buying a single SGI iron with more about 4* less loft than your 5 iron. The SGI will help on off center strikes, and the larger size may help your confidence.

I agree about the 3-iron. I added a 5-wood and got rid of my 3-wood. The 5 is easier to hit and I hit it just about as long as my 3-wood with more consistency. Driver, 5, 4 hybrid, 4-PW is where I am now. But I'm getting "new" clubs today (MP-54) so who knows.

Add the 5w, take out the 3 and then try and find a hybrid that'll replace the 4.

I can be hard to find a hybrid that works, but they are out there and the results are undeniable when you find one that works.

True. Heard on PGA Radio that the original hybrids had a draw bias that technology has eliminated in today's hybrids, but IMO they still require a certain understanding of how to hit them. I often pull mine out to hit a ball, put it down, and the world suddenly doesn't make sense, so I put it back and choke down on the 5 wood. I have to solve that. Maybe a 7 wood.

I took out my 3-iron earlier this year in favor of a 5-wood and wish I'd done so sooner. I used to play a Cobra F8+ (4-5 wood) set at 16.5* and then a 20* 3-iron. I now play a F8+ 14.5* 3-4 wood and lofted my 4-5 wood down to 19*. Next up after that is my 4-iron at 23*.

The 5-wood is automatic on short Par-4 tee shots and I'm much more confident going into Par-5s in two with my 5-wood than I was with my 3-iron. Better performance from the rough also lets me attack Par 5s in two which I likely would not have with a 3-iron. It also allowed me to add the lower lofted 3-wood into the mix as well, which provided me with additional options off the tee and on the rare Par-5 where I need the extra distance into the green.

I play modern GI irons and they don't even make a 3iron in my set. If they did, it would be about 17°. Pretty close to a 1 iron of years gone by. I've always bagged a 5 wood and just recently ditched the 4iron/4h for a 7 wood.

Mind your gapping. Get on a field or hole by yourself and hit a few balls see what your actual gaps are with the clubs at the top of your bag.

I go 5w/19° (Rogue) & 4Hy/22-23° (between G400 and Apex 19), then into 5i/25-26°. Generally 5w is my longest club off the deck, 4Hy is a layup to 5w; both go off the tee into long par 3s/or short 4s. Follow a shaft weight progression of 65-70-75-85H from driver to hybrid. Getting the right hybrid shaft can make a world of difference.

Spring of 19 I started with driver, 3 wood, 19’ hybrid and the irons started with a 4. In my younger years I could hit a 2 and 3 iron. The two left the bag and so did the three. I tried a few hybrids at 19 and the left miss was common.

At the time last year I was playing a Ping G Hybrid and I was done with it. I got a Callaway Rogue 5 wood to match match my 3 and it isn’t going anywhere. I hit it higher and I am not afraid of a massive hook. I did add a 22’ hybrid this year to replace the 4 iron. I was happy with the driver and irons so I decided to give the PXG hybrid a shot. So far so good.

Well I hit my 5-wood about 195 yards and when I've used a 3-wood I also hit it about 195 yards. So I didn't so much "add a 5-wood" as "subtract a 3-wood". Then my 180-yard 4-iron (actually a 4-hybrid) and pretty much 10-12 yard gaps on down through the wedges. Only carrying 13 clubs right now and not sure what I'd add if I wanted to carry 14.

I thought about getting some P790 3 and 4 irons to replace my 19* hybrid and my 4 hybrid. Thought about it a bit and I am just way too consistent with the 19* hybrid to try and replace it with a 3 iron. Ended up getting an MP20 HMB 4 iron and scrapping the 4 hybrid. Now it goes 3-4w set at 17* then 19* hybrid then 22* 4 iron. Im happy with it.

I waffled between a 3h and 5w for a while and the 5w has been in the bag for months now. It's longer off the deck (besides the loft diffs) and I dont really see much difference in 'wind performance' even with the added height. The ability to hit a green with a 5w is superior to a 3h or a 3i as well. Stops on a dime; for me, anyway.

My 6 thru 3 were kinda bunched in yardages so I got cavity back 4 and 5 irons and made the lofts 5 degrees apart and added the 4th wedge. I used to carry just 3 wedges. So my gaps are great and my punch 5 wood is a great fairway finder on short par 4s.

Having a 18* hybrid in place of a 3-iron has been the right move for me. Doesn't matter if you're more suited for a 5w, that's just as good. I'm just more comfortable with a hybrid at that loft. I also tend to hit 5 woods way too high. I personally just get a better trajectory with the hybrid and the shorter shaft gives me more confidence too.

Again, can't go wrong with either, but it certainly helped me close the gap between my 3 wood and 4-iron. If you're not using your 3-iron much, then it's a no brainer!

Currently I have D, 3W, H 22 degree then 5 iron. But I have distance irons so my 5 iron I would classify as a 4 if not a 3 iron... Wonder if not 19 hybrid is a bit strong even after a 3 iron?

I am thinking of ditching a wedge and put back my 5 wood in play. I find the 22 degree hybrid a bit tricky in length but yes it does go quite well as a 4 iron but completely bomb it and it felt like it could go like my 18 degree wood.

I would never ditch my 3-wood. I get good distance with it and it´s very useful from tee also when driver is not needed. I do run it relatively weak at 15,5 degrees though.

I have a GI Nike 4 iron that borders on 3i loft and I hit it well when needed. Just put a sim max 5w in and there’s no gap for me at my courses. I rarely need to hit the 4i unless I’m waaaaay out of position and I think we all know you really never are out of position in the short grass. So the 5w for me is waaaay more versatile.

i got rid of my 5 wood. Since my 3 hybrid was the same loft and though a shorter shaft , longer actually in distance. Also took my 3 wood to 16 degrees.

I think that is what I am going to end up doing, did some gap testing yesterday and borrowed a 5 wood from local shop (Mizuno ST190 with CK Tensei White 70 X-Stiff) and fit perfect with what I am looking for. Just need to fine tune a 5 wood now and figure which brand shaft combo is going to be the best, the demo club I had is not my first preference.

My simple rule; if you don't have confidence and rarely hit a club take it out of the bag. Seems to reduce bad decisions or situations where you end up pulling a club that you aren;t confident that you will hit. In my case, i tend to play with less than 14 clubs and seem to be just fine.

I recently put a 5w in my bag, still have and use my 3i but switch between them depending on the course and wind conditions. I live in a quite windy area so 3i is a must sometimes, but when there are calmer days it's wonderful to launch a 5w into the atmosphere and watch it land softly on the green. Distance wise the 3i carries about 210-215 and the 5w 225-230, but with the lower landing angle of the 3i they roll out to about the same distance.
