Ping i210 vs Taylormade P790 irons

Definitely the i210s. I hit the 790s a few months back and almost 1/10 balls would be 15 yards hot. My friend has the i210s and I have messed around with them and had some great results. The 790s are also so strong that I would have to carry something like a 48°. On top of this the 210s are like 2/3 of the price. No brainer for me.

I had the '17 P790s for a little while but ended up trading them for a set of I210s.  While I enjoyed the feel, they ended up launching too high for my tastes (tried with both Modus 120S and S400s).  Much prefer the I210s overall.  Dispersion was basically the same, but distance control has been spot on for me with the Pings.

They will likely be in strong contention for my gamer set next year, but just have to wait on re-shafting a couple other sets to see how they go, but have nothing bad to say about them.

The i 210's are surprisingly longer than you would expect as well.

I started the season with my I20s (which I love and measure all others by to replace as I'm so comfortable with them) and was longer than I expected given a few year lay off from really playing.  I didn't notice any difference between the 2 sets after changing, even after putting the shafts from the I20s into the I210s.

I tested Ping i210 and TM P790 with same shaft in a fitting session 2 weeks ago. Both look great. P790 was longer for sure but the feel and sound could not touch the i210. I also hit the i210 in a tighter grouping. Ordered the Ping i210s 4-U. It was the clear winner for me.

I know Ping is taking a long time to get orders out,  but curious what you might have been told as to how long it may be before your i210's show up?

The P790 are a numbing set of clubs. Really no feel but, the positive trade off is the stronger lofts resulting in what we hope is extra distance. I would probably only need the P790's towards the longer end of my bag and fill it in with some other mix of Mc's or Mb's. The Ping i210 are just a cavity set of clubs with a little more weight on the bottom which makes them easier to hit. Two different approaches and designs of course but targeting the same result. Just depends how you want your clubs to look.

I think this isn't quite an apples to apples comparison. P790 is in the "player's distance" category and i210 is more in the "player's cavity" category.

IMO the Ping vs TM comparison would be P790 vs i500 and P7MC vs i210.

I agree with you. Kudos to Ping for making such high performing golf clubs that people want to constantly put into the types of categories that are more known for game improvement features. I might lump the P770 in with the i210's as well. Either way, the i210 and the P7MC/P770 are for really, really good players. IMO probably 5 hcp or better. I play to a 4-5 hcp and I have both the G400 and i210 irons and I choose to game the G400. It seems like every other week the i210's have a win on either the PGA or LPGA, they are surgical tools for the best players in the world. Compared to my G400's the i210's are higher spin, shorter and less forgiving on misses. I miss a bit towards the toe and the G400 are less punishing. I must also be a relatively high spin player because the i210's rip back for me. I hit my G400 9i about 149 an it stops dead in its pitch mark, the i210 I fly about 143-144 and it often rips back 2-3 paces. I live in WI and play mostly public tracks with soft (relatively speaking) greens, I don't need the extra spin. The P790's are distance monsters, easily playable up to 15-18 hcp. And I mean that in a good way, I have two buddies that are around 8-10 hcp that play them, they are good clubs (but very different than i210's).

Two totally different irons both designed to do opposite things. That being said I'd go with the 210's every time.

I would have to argue this, as I carry a 7-8 handicap and was fit for the I500’s because “they were more forgiving”. I hated them, they were harsh feeling and my missed shots were quite short. I sold them and went to a different fitter, he had me hit the I210’s . I was hesitant but WOW. The feel was fantastic, I was a club longer and ball flight was higher. Now in saying this I got fitted in DG 120 S300 in my I210’s. I would say go get fit and hit everything! You never know.

I play the i210 for a reason.  They are the easiest to hit, most consistent irons on the market IMHO.  You cannot find a more forgiving iron that is also very playable, workable, and consistent distance.  They make the game easier, especially the 4 and 5 irons.  I love Ping long irons.

I would have to disagree with this statement.  I have a set on the way BECAUSE of how much easier they are to hit than what I’ve been playing most recently (Bridgestone tour B cb’s, Sub70 639 combo) but still look great.  I’m just over a 12 and found the 210’s very easy to hit in testing vs other players cavity irons (especially something like the P7MC)
