MP-4 vs MP-67 vs MP-37: address photos

Recommended Posts

Just going through some gear, pretty sure I'm playing one of 2 of these sets this season (at least starting around the 6 iron) and need to do a little work on them. I was looking down at these three blade 6 irons and thought this might be a fun challenge. Afterward I'll try to change the title so the pics can be found by anyone searching for info on these down the road - I always love comparison photos. Took three just so the angle is straight down the shaft on each one, figure this is hard enough as it is.

I'll give up the one manxytag got right... its the one on the left. It is indeed an MP-4

Sonja, you're very close (in a way), but its not a 32

Also there is no 33 on the board

4, 67, and 29 based on the toe

The last one might be a 14.  Can't tell from the offset.

I'm really surprised to hear the one on the left is the MP4. I held my MP4 6i up alongside the photo, and yours appears to have a lot more offset. The scoring lines are the same, however.

If MP32 is "close" to the one in the middle, I'd have to go with MP67?

Now the one on the right has different scoring lines to my MP14, so I will rule that out. I've never seen the MP29 or TN87 6i up close, so I can't answer for those. It looks a little more compact than the others which makes me wonder if it's an MP18. I had a set, and I remember the short irons were a little compact looking, but not necessarily the 6i.

Edit: Also the toe end on the one on the right is more rounded than my MP14. The point of the toe is also in a different position in relation to the end of the grooves as well.

Wow put out the signal and they really do come! Very impressed brethren.

I can't leave y'all hangin, here's the answer key:

IMG_0182.jpg.239b83f1a621a846e0e0b4bbce59fa25.jpg

To be fair the 37 was kinda unheralded, so that was always going to be tough. Pretty much everyone was heading down the right path. CatchyNickname ruling out the 14 with some sleek analysis, good on you.

Shape-wise that 37 is the bee's knees for me, just enough old mixed with new. If they had only not done the reverse offset with that set. And the sole design isn't my favorite either. But oh the feel and looks.

I love the hosel-head transition of the 67, quite possibly my favorite overall Mizzy blade actually. Lofts are so weak though, guess I'll have to do some work on my ego if I put them in play.

Noticed one comment that the middle one was bigger than the 4. The blade length on the 67 is actually shorter than an MP-4, though the topline on the 4 is obviously the thinnest of the bunch.

It was an MP-37? Ahh. I had a set for about year about 3~4 years ago. I got rid of them for two reasons: 1) didn't like the shape of the 9i and PW, and more importantly 2) wife complaining that I had too many sets of irons taking up space in our flat

Now, I can't do anything about the shape of the short irons, but I was able to move out of the flat into a house with more space. Unfortunately, I sold the MP-37s before the move. I really liked their middle and long irons. Basically, the 8i down to the 3i were great.

Edit: In fact, I think the iron on the left in my avatar is an MP-37

Couldn't agree more. And the MP-4 is actually kind of the opposite for me, I love the 8-PW but the mid irons aren't my favorite

One more note while I had these out: hosel length from longest to shortest was 67, 37, 4. In my experience this is a sneaky part of iron design that can really influence ball flight.

Finally got the lofts/lies dialed in on the 67s: damn they're some wonderful sticks - planning on giving them a full-time spot in the bag. Also in the too many iron sets dept is this guy: going to move those MP-4s if anyone is interested, can let them go for a great price.

I owned the 30’s,32’s,33’s,37’s and 67’s and liked the 67’s best.

I think the 37’s are under appreciated and the 32’s and the 33’s are over appreciated. Not sure why the 32/33 get icon status. I feel the 67’s were better. The 37’s and 33’s are a toss up for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
I liked the 32’s the least, but that’s because it was the only one that had a different profile shaft (rifle 6.5) the others either had S400 or x100’s. I think the best golf I’ve ever played were with the 37’s..... I got the 67’s and only played sparingly 2 seasons before having a back injury and being out for 6-7 years 😒. Sold them on BST due to thinking I needed something more forgiving coming back to golf....... hindsight, I wish I kept them and just reshafted them with something easier on my busted up, arthritic 44year old back..... Modus 105s hs/x1 D5 preferably 😉

if I didn’t just buy a set, I’d be PM’img you about the 37’s 👍

67 certainly doesn't get a lot of press around here huh... and the 4 and 33 are up on a pedestal. I'm with you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

... to good health in the new year 🍻

Since this has been resurrected, I'll chime in....

The MP-37s don't actually have reverse offset.  Well, effectively, that is, it's more or less constant; I expect no one can see the difference between 0.11" and 0.12".  😉

I have a theory that, because of how predominant progressive offset is, when we encounter constant offset, it can appear to be reverse offset.  Operative word there is "theory."
