anyways i go with spieth to win before mcilroy(if ever)....i just think rory will end up being the most overrated GREAT player of all time.

Wasn’t sure how to say it...

Jack won in 1980. 6 years to The Masters win In 1986. None since

Tiger won in 2008, 11 years to The Masters in 2019. None since

It’s interesting, since Bobby Jones first knocked up the impregnable quadrilateral, only the very greatest of greats can count a  modern grand slam in their conquests.

Jack, TW, Hogan, Player, Gene Sarazen

All are regarded as having, at their best, golf games without weakness and long standing histories having rock solid golf minds, cool under pressure, steely resolve.

The guys with 3, it’s amazing that many have multiples of one but just never were able to close out that last one despite many attempts.

Its a “chicken or the egg” observation but,

Is it that you can’t win the grand slam without first being a truly elite great of the game?

Or that you become an all time great by winning a grand slam?

 It is  a tough road

  5 have won all 4

12 golfers have won 3 different majors

gotcha now...but in relation to Rory and Jordan are you trying to say Rory's next major has to be the Masters or else he'll never win one after that? and Jordan has a year and a half to win another major or else he'll never get the PGA? golfers don't usually win much majors in their 40's and the old generation had later peaks to their careers...except the GOAT's of course

It takes a generational talent to win the grand slam. Four of the five who have completed the Grand Slam, Sarazen, Hogan, Nicklaus and Woods, were regarded as the best players of their time. And Player won 9 majors while traveling the world.

The list of those who are 1 major short of the grand slam are the likes of Hagen, Nelson, Snead, Palmer and Watson. They all have won at least 6 majors each. Then there are those who are 2 majors short, like Ballesteros, who have also won multiple majors. All these players were also regarded as the best among their peers.

This has just been a long way to say that neither McIlroy (with 4 and a mental block at the Masters now) nor Spieth (with a single win in each of the others) are in that category.

Not sure if this little statistic fits here, but when a player has gone more than 5 years between majors, they have not added to the total after that. This includes Nicklaus and Woods. That said, McIlroy has been major-less for 7 years and Spieth, who won The Open in 2017 and has the rest of this year and next. Is history is a reliable indicator? If so, it appears that McIlroy will not complete the Grand Slam. Spieth is returning to form, so his chances appear to be slightly better, but more likely to be included in one of the other lists.

Minor point, but just to be fair, Hagen was 42 and past his prime when the first Masters was played in 1934. And Byron Nelson only played the Open once.

Not saying that it has to be that way, but history says that if McIlroy’s next major is not the Masters, he will likely not complete the grand slam.
Spieth might be different. There are 7 more majors before he is 5 years removed from his last major. History would say if he can win one of those, he re-sets the 5 year clock. That would give him many opportunities to win a PGA, especially if he picks up any other major as that particular clock ticks.

On the other hand, as you have hinted, they are both still young, and there are many majors left in their careers. Barring injury, such as Woods, they have a fantastic chance to rewrite history. That said, it is hard to win any tournament on the PGA Tour, and there are only 4 chances a year to win a major.

No one has ever achieved modern grand slam so i'm gonna say no one will until i see it.

Then if we are talking about career grand slams i believe OJS will get it before Rory.

Too much pressure now on both.

With every passing year the chances diminish.

Rory has never looked further from winning a major than he does now. Just getting back to winning a regular PGA tour event would be an achievement this season.

Spieth has got his game back, but I'm not sure he'll ever return to the form of 2015-7. The chances of peaking on the week of the PGA championship, on a course which favors his game, not coming up against someone else playing better and the all-important bit of luck needed are slim.

Of course the answer is still Jordan.  Has what 15-17 more realistic chances .  Pretty good odds compared to almost anyone else.

A few side notes: if no one completes the career GS this year it's be 21 years since any one has done so! Obviously if Phil could keep it on F'n planet on Sunday at Winged Foot this he wouldn't even be in this discussion.

Also I personally think Rory will never win at Augusta, dude just isn't disciplined enough to win on that course (fun fact Hideki was in the bottom 10 in driving distance out of all the players who made the cut). He always gets himself out of position on a hole or 2 on Thursday/Friday, makes a big number and is usually playing catch up.

Augusta is a 2nd shot course, just get the ball in play and go from there. I know it's 7500 yards which is long obviously, but looking at the scorecard, there are 5 par 4's 450 yards and under, and the 2 par 5's on the back are both under 530 yards (for now at least).  3 of the last 4 winners of the Masters (Reed, Tiger, Hideki), were average in terms of driving distance but won because they were never really out of position.

Its soo crazy... its like their is no finesse in some of this guys game. Its like impossible to convince them that if they can accept losing ten yards but being in the fairway... not trying to play hero ball all the time... and not have panic attacks over putting maybe something would click and they can get it done. Thats why speith was on fire for a while... finesse game... morikawa looks similar but has to clean up a bit and putt better but hes got serious game too. These guys get in their own way but dont we all ??

Or had Phil not made poor swings/shots/decisions in 3-4 other US Opens during final round that he finished 2nd in. Such as Merion, Pinehurst, Shinnecock and Bethpage (09).
