Iron Covers

Recommended Posts

1 hour ago, GolfNuts4 said:

I take flak from my playing partners because after every shot, I use a cordless buffer and shine each iron. It only takes about 5-7 minutes per shot. Seriously, people should do what they want, doesn't bother me if they use iron covers. I treat my clubs as tools and my irons look pretty beat up but work fine. I do keep my headcovers on my woods during the round. I cannot look at a scuffed up driver or fairway wood....little OCD about that.

And that’s what I’m so curious about...if Driver and Wood covers are standard issue, and everyone is so passionate about putter covers, than why is the idea of using covers to protect Irons so revolting?

It's like putting seat covers on your leather car seats.  What's the point of having them  if you can't enjoy the look and design of the seats?!

*Although,  must admit I have started putting a cover on every other club when I load them into my car to avoid unecessary marking during travel (although, I forget half the time...).

Why is it ok to have a cover on your putter, your driver, and your woods, but not irons?

Most people who hate on iron covers don't actually know why they do - they just heard it somewhere and figured they'd be parrots.

Tell 'em "Ditch the other covers and put your money where your mouth is" and watch them stfu.

Exactly!! That’s why I’m curious...just don’t understand where it’s coming from.

Everyone will post pictures of their cool Driver, Wood, and putter covers, and then bash Iron covers. Just don’t understand the logic.

Sorry. I use iron covers, as I don't really care for the beat up, dragged behind a truck on a gravel road look. My forged irons are soft just like I like them.

I play with multiple different groups, and I am a faster player with my covers than 95% of the people I play with, and covers are not the reason for the remaining 5%. Slow players are slow players.. not because they do or do not have covers. Covers are not going to slow down the guy who takes 5 practice swings before each shot.

If you don't like them, don't use them.

I would not use them on the course, but if i was shipping my clubs I would probably get some or stuff towels between them. Dings and dents build character and having worn clubs makes you look better to others. Irons are designed to go through the ground at high speeds so protecting them from clanking when walking/driving down the fairway means nothing to them.

So people don’t put covers on their Irons to let them get dinged and banged up so they cooler for other people’s perception of you?

Interesting...I don’t understand that logic.

OP- one thing to point out is that a 14 way bag will be worse for iron chatter than other types of bags.  So you'll want to keep the covers.

Personally I don't use iron covers.  Like some others have mentioned, I love the sound of irons clanking together during a walking round.  I also love the look of years of chatter on a forged club head, it looks way better to me than a new iron on the shelf.

I do use a putter cover and wood covers.  Huge paint chips on a driver would be distracting to me, and similarly dings all over a putter would annoy me as well.  But it's all personal choice so do what makes you happy.

They're tools not decorations. Sort of like you always wanted to be scared of the guy in your group with the rusted over wedges, you don't have to be worried about the guy with irons that look brand new.

I actually love the look of beautiful well-maintained clubs, and personally don’t like the look of rusted clubs.

At the end of the day though I guess it’s all about personal preference.

Then, by all means use iron covers. It's a personal preference, I really don't think anyone cares if you use them or not. Do what makes you happy. I don't use them, but don't believe it slows play down at all, and could care less if someone in my group uses them. I just don't like putting them on and off. It's pretty rare that I really look at someone else's bag anyway. I most likely would not even know you had them on your clubs.

Very interesting, thanks for the explanation.

I didn’t know a 14-way bag would be worse for chatter though...that was the whole reason I bought it, Lol!

Yeah, I’d personally prefer to keep my Irons looking nice and new just like my Driver/Woods/putter etc, but good to know some guys prefer the chatter/wear on their clubs.

Really interesting!  I hate that sound which is part of the reason I use iron covers.  I also hate dings on toplines.

That said, the reason I started using them was that I was buying and selling clubs a ton back in the days before fitting, just kinda searching for what I liked.  Using covers helped maintain resale value to some extent, and I got used them (and not hearing the clanking of clubs).

It's not really about the preference. I'm saying if you asked me to pick a playing partner and the only thing I got to see was their clubs, I'd pick the one who looks like he treats them like tools not art.

I just wrap a towel in between my clubs and that does the trick. I clean my clubs in between shots but generally while sitting and watching a playing partner his their shot. Just keep it moving..

I really find it hilarious that all you guys that bash iron covers would never buy a used set of irons because of the chatter.  Have to have the NEW PXG for 3K but then within two years they are worth less than half that.  And now with the "cut rate" PXGs much less!

I don't buy used irons.

I like my clubs to look beat up. My wedges are raw, the black finish has all but gone on my irons, my hybrid has paint chips all over it and my driver has a lovely gouge in the paint just off centre of the crown running from the face to the rear where it slid down the rail it was leaning on at the driving range. Miraculously, my 3 wood has yet to incur any meaningful damage. I think it adds character. 😎
