Erik Compton- Amazing Journeyman

The stats of this two time heart ❤ transplant recipient won't wow anyone- a t2 at the 2014 US Open during a run when he made the playoffs 3 consecutive years has been the highlight of his PGA Tour career so far. 7 professional wins including 1 in Mexico on the Korn Ferry Tour, 3 on the Canadian Tour, 2 on the Hooters Tour along with the 2005 Hassan II Trophy, an event held in Morocco that became part of the European Tour in 2010 who's champions include Billy Casper (1972 and 1975), Lee Trevino, Vijay Singh, Payne Stewart, Nick Price, Colin Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington.

Has made 56% of the cuts in his 164 PGA Tour starts and 54.5% of the cuts in his 196 Korn Ferry starts. Shows how close the KF level is to the PGA Tour. Overall, has averaged $4,230 per KF start and $20,716 per PGA Tour start.

With a T17 his best recent result on the Korn Ferry Tour, he has been teaching lessons and his wife working full time as a paralegal.

Hopefully the 68 K from his T20 on the PGA tour this past weekend helps.

I watched the bunker shot on his 72nd hole that Sunday at the 2014 US Open to save par and his 2nd place finish. I remember like yesterday hearing a church bell ringing just as he was taking his stance to make the par putt. It was so eerie to all of us in the stands. I’m sure most of us knew his health struggles at the time given the media talk.

When they showed him yesterday I told my wife that I cannot believe he is still cashing checks on the Pga tour. Absolutely remarkable that a man on his third heart can do what he has done.

Yes! I would imagine that he has to take immunosuppressive drugs which would make Covid more scary. He Monday qualified for the Honda this year,

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/erik-compton-monday-qualifier-honda-classic

but I'd like to see him get more sponsor's exemptions. VERY INSPIRING how he has overcome his medical hardships to be a world class athlete!

Can’t but help root for the guy! What an incredible journey. Hard to comprehend that he is 41, where has the time gone.

I do agree that based on the past year's "messaging" from companies, etc, Compton should be the sponsor's exemption favorite.  Hopefully he can play well enough to make them a moot point, but I would argue he is much more of a hero than some people who have been held out as one over the years.

a few years back when he was playing on the KF (Web.com) tour, I walked with his group as their scorer.

he is a soft spoken man, following his path and those that knew his journey were pulling for him, then and now, to succeed and reach the Tour.

what an inspiration.

This is  just one more reminder, that golfers are people that go through things, sometimes very serious.  People don't humanize them and forget they're just like us.  Compton 's story is well known and makes you want to root for success for the guy.

I've always rooted for him.  As a liver and kidney transplant recipient I know exactly what he's been through.

Imagine what he'd have Done with a good ticker.

Amazing person.

Logical speculation, but hard to say. Maybe the medical issues have held him back physically at times, but overcoming challenges could have made him stronger mentally.

Unfortunately, I see Erik shot 72-71 to miss the cut in the Rex Hospital on the KFT last week and isn't playing KFT or PGA tour this week. Also missing the Rex cut was 34 yo Sangmoon Bae who won a dozen events worldwide, including 2 on the PGA Tour before serving ~21 months in the Korean Miltary 2015-17. He has had 1 KFT win since in 2018, but hasn't regained his earlier form for the most part and has an OWGR in the 800s. Shows what a fine line there is between a top 125 player and someone struggling to pay their bills.

Yah, agree totally. As you stated, if he had a normal heart and no physical issues, would he have the same drive, focus, discipline and confidence that he has?

THAT is the million dollar question cuz as I know that you know this, though 98%+ do not, and that is that it is not the physical side, talent or ability that separates these guys. At the very top, the elite level, be they Am or be they Pro and regardless of the sport, activity or profession, it is the mental strength, drive, discipline, focus and confidence, ie., the MENTAL side, not the physical, that takes someone to the top of the mountain.

I don't know that he would have the mind set that he has if he were healthy with no physical issues. It is purely hypothetical however if not, I would bet not, so no, I don't think that a healthy Erik Compton would have achieved what he has with a good heart.

As always, just my .03 worth😊

Great story!!

With a normal heart he might not have gotten into golf like he did, possible he’s some IT manager or hot air balloon pilot that plays twice a month and is happy having beers with his buddies all day driving the cart in circles and trying out everyone’s new driver.

There's a story I heard that Erik, when he was at UGA, used to warm up by working his way up & down the range & asking his teammates if he could try whatever club they were hitting. By the time he was done he was loosened up & hadn't had to clean any of his own clubs.

Hahaha, that's priceless😂😂

Have a Graat weekend🍻

Or like moi, minus the beer and circles, flipping a cart into a creek, in the process fracturing one of the game's Icon's two brand new custom hand made Penna drivers 😜🤪

All in a day's Play😝

Stay Well Brotha👊
