How far do you hit you 7 iron?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering where the players on this board are in regards to distance? I am in between yardages with my 7i 155-165 and that’s on the sweet spot.

my 35 degree old standard loft 7 iron went 170-175 but my set now with a 31 degree 7 iron goes 180-185

Great point! I need to learn my lofts on my Callaway X22’s. I have had them for at least a decade.

I hit my 7i 145m carry and roll from 150m up to 155m depending on the conditions. Well struck 7i flies 155m carry.

In yards that's 160-170yds carry.

6-8 ish hcp btw

I am a 20 cap. On my way to 15! I Hope!

Do you have a  full and 3/4 swing with your 7? I do not....YET!

I do.  it took awhile to be confident in half swings but I picture my arms as clock handles and gauge it in my head if i need the arms to be at 9 for a half swing, and 11 for a 3/4 swing.  practice practice practice

It only hurts once, except golf it hurts a lifetime

they should be 35 degrees then but not too sure.  that's a really good distance in my opinion for a 7 iron you have currently because it is far enough and with a 35 degree head gets high enough to hold greens

Well, we play a lot of one club at my course on the weekend afternoons. I can hit a 7 iron from anywhere.

Depends.  185 on a stock swing.  I like to hit a lot of 3/4 shots though that go 170 with a lower flight.  We get Santa Ana winds here and it gets bad especially during the winter.

You guys have some wonderful 5 and 6 irons with 7 stamped on it. 🤪

Mine is 36*

There is too much emphasis on what number is on the bottom of the club.  These buffed lofts are causing issues at the bottom of the bag with distance gaps on short irons.

With iron sets that have 30 and 32 degree 7 irons, there is going to be one huge gap at the bottom of the bag…or you have to carry 5 wedges.

This is nothing more than companies being able to advertise their irons go farther.

To repeat something I posted in another thread.

Lofts of a stock, off-the-shelf Titleist DCI iron set circa 1990:

21-24-28-32-36-40-44-48

That's 8 clubs covering 21-48 degrees, average gap 3.9 degrees

Lofts of a stock, off-the-shelf set of Callaway Rogue X "distance irons" 30 years later (Rogue X):

21-24-27-31.5-36-41-46

That's 7 clubs covering 21-46 degrees, average gap 4.2 degrees

Was there already a "huge gap the bottom of the bag" in the player's cavity backs way back then? If you ignore the numbers stamped on the sole, all they've done is spread out 7 clubs to cover the same range of lofts as 8 clubs did back in the day.

I would have thought a swing coach like yourself would be the last person getting hung up on what number is stamped on the bottom of each club.

way easier to hit that DCI 48 * wedge soft than it is to hit a 46 * distance iron soft.

Also chipping with those distance irons is a nightmare. I play p750 which are like a players cb and even those a bit hot short iron wise for chipping IMO

Well certainly a smaller clubhead, thinner sole, low-COR face etc. on a player's iron helps with creativity and touch on partial swings and short game shots. There's a reason so few Tour players use shovel-sized irons, after all.

But it has absolutely nothing to do with loft progression. If the 46 degree distance iron were 48 degrees there would still be the issues you're describing.
