How far do you hit you 7 iron?

Yesterday I hit my 7i a whopping 101y out of deep rough, under a big tree branch, to just a couple of paces left of the green. Got up and down for par.

Come on!  You couldn't get a baby fade on that to get it on?  What kind of WRXer are you?

I carry my 7 iron around 145, which seems odd given that I can swing a 43 inch driver around 115mph.  I am terrible with short irons and wedges.  I can hit my Miura 1 iron more consistently than I can hit my 7 iron.  I'm better off using my 11 wood for all approach shots.

Out of curiosity how tall are you?

At a range yesterday was dancing the ball around a 168 flag . 36 degree is loft. Can drive it 275. What's the problem?

I go 160 to 165 with a 7i and maybe 250 off the tee with 10.5 degrees ping 425 max.

Give or take a bit, we’re roughly the same. 170 carry 33 degree P760 and a driver swing speed about 107.

Yes, my son carries his 7i quite far. and driver over 300 with a swing speed over 125.

However, comparing driver and 7i isn’t very exact. Some folks hit irons very well, and driver, not so well? There will likely be exceptions.

These threads are interesting to hear what people hit their irons. What most people are claiming if accurate is a) under ideal condition b) flushing their iron.

what I learned is I rarely hit my irons perfect with no wind (5 handicap) and my stats show that about 60% of missed greens are me coming up short so I generally club up (especially if I have green behind the pin). So for this example I hit my 7iron 160-165 yds but will use it for 155-160.

Launch monitors changed the way I measured my distances. My average is 170 carry.

Earlier I wrote what I actually get on the course which is anything from 100 to 170 depending upon the shot I need.

I’ve learnt to use the club from many distances and situations by playing only the 7i and a couple balls in my pocket.

Try playing only a 7i. It will open up your eyes as to how versatile this club can be. Everything from chipping, bunker and putting to off the tee with low runners.

Don’t most decent players have a progression which is close to a CHS on this chart? Or not? It works for me. (Use the loft listed instead of the club number. You may have to average things out a bit.)

My 33 deg.  7 iron swing is a short swing probably around 85 mph and goes around 163 normally. I swing progressively faster w/longer clubs. My 2 wood ss is around 106.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

i swing my driver in the mid 130s and have touched 140, but have distances that match up better with the 120 column bc i’m an 18 handicap and make crap contact most of the time.

It’s more of a rough guideline than an accurate metric.

I believe the numbers are scaled up and down from PGA player numbers?

Spend dome cash and get a launch monitor and you will have  a better idea of your "average"

If I were playing my AP2's, my distances would be very close to what is listed for "LPGA Tour 93" except I only get about 200 yards carry out of my driver instead of their 220.

With my Rogue X irons the numbers on the sole are different. The lofts on the chart are pretty much AP2 lofts.

I have used them many times, the problem is if done indoors you don’t have the elements and everyday is different. That is why the pros sit at the range with their launch monitors during tournaments.

I venture to say what most think is their average is not.
