Phil using armlock in FedEx St Jude pro-am - 2021 WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational

Recommended Posts

So weird seeing him with an armlock, especially with a blade head, but it's Phil. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Where's the ugh ! shorts and black shoes crowd ?

I never got that. But I know people complain about it.  Or the black socks issue with pants.  Weird to me. I’ve heard people gripe about tiger wearing white shoes , I was under the assumption that shoes just needed to match the clothes.  No?

Anybody remember Phil with the belly putter? This is just as weird. But he'll try anything if he thinks there is an advantage.

He was struggling when he switched to the belly putter for the last 3 playoff events in 2011 then posted 2 top 10s in 3 starts and dropped it. Then miraculously became one of the best putters on tour for a 7 year stretch immediately after despite poor putting throughout his career to that point. Was a strange time

Let's hope Phil doesn't start putting well with it because I can see the proverbial USGA ban coming from a mile down the road. Arm Lock and Wrist Lock has been getting more and more traction as of late and I know the USGA is just waiting in the woods to strike when the time is right haha.

If it was so easy everyone would arm lock.  It's not.  I used it a few years ago with the original Betti Kuchar to get over the wiggles on short putts.  It helped me tremendously and eventually I switched back to standard because I make more long putts that way.  It only really helps the nervy or yippy guy and they punish themselves enough, believe me.  Leave them alone please.

Lol. I tried Armlock and it gave me the yips. It took me about 18 months to regain my confidence inside of 8 feet. So to each their own.

I started out putting with a traditional grip but missed a lot of short/medium putts.

So I tried the belly putter method for a while, but missed a lot of short/medium putts.

Back to traditional and once again, missed a lot of short/medium putts.

Armlock? Hell, I'd try Anklelock putting if I made some short/medium putts.

I just don’t get why Phil likes the claw and now the armlock with that blade style putter.  It just seems like two styles of putting in which you would not want a big release.  I’m no expert though, and obviously comfort trumps everything else.

I have putted with this style head for many years. As a righty, I actually block the putt with my left hand and don't release the toe after my forward press. The armlock would feel similar with being able to hold the forward press angle constant Imho.

I suppose that makes sense.  It still seems there are other putters better suited to any stroke that doesn’t release the toe.  But I definitely could be wrong.  Liking the look of what your looking down at is surely the most important thing so I guess it makes sense.

Amen.

I've putted conventional (with every variation of a conventional grip known to man), Claw, left-hand low, belly & armlock.   I even fiddled with a broomstick for a while.

There isn't a method known to man which cannot be "yipped."

When I arm-lock, distance control is the challenge.

When I go left hand low, I tend to start longer putts "more on line," but I'm susceptible to a putt "exploding" on me (and going "many feet" past the hole).

I'm less "yippy" with the claw (but I can still hit some beauts), but I can get 'yippy" with every possible permutation of a "stroke" . . . too often, you can't tell if I made one or had one.

If it was as easy as "they" (the ones complaining the loudest) say, then it'd dominate.

it doesn't.  There are only a few guys on tour who arm-lock, and they're not known as the "best putters."  It's almost non-existent on the LPGA tour.

Arm-lock is a method employed by people searching for something, anything that works . . . and it's that because it ISN'T "better"  - at most, it can be the "best available" for a particular player.

He already had a major forward press so this just allows him to have a consistent forward press

It's been less pronounced over the last few years, he used to really press forward in the mid-to-late '90s. If play around with a blade and slide down the shaft (so the butt is in the armlock position) and "do a Lefty" you end up with quite a similar action.

Haven't seen him in-motion, but if he could replicate his old action by forward pressing before take-off he might rekindle some old feelings.

Love the putter!
