Pxg Irons Rusting

adams603

Recommended Posts

I had my son fitted in july for the Gen 3 0311p irons. I was playing with him and noticed rust is starting to form around the weights. To his credit he is very anal with his clubs and cleans them constantly so I know its not from him being lazy and not taking care of them. They were ordered direct from PXG so I know they aren't fake.

Anyone else have issue with rusting?

Do you have a photo by chance?

I would have to check on my t's but I don't think so.  On my sugar daddy wedge, some of the deeper scratches on the face have  little bit, but nowhere else.  Not really much of a surprise on the wedge.

I'll get some some pics when I get home. Its not on the face, it around the weight ports on the back of the club. If it was on the face I wouldn't be too worried, I expect that to happen somewhat.

A tip for you.  Do not have him dip the clubs in a pail of water  as a ilttle water could seep into the screw threads..  Spray the face with Windex or Simple Green amd wipe dry.  I'v e been doing this for over 50 years and have never had a club rust, either carbon or stainless steel.

this is your answer.

unless he backs those weights out each time and dries the threads out, the. water trapped in there from cleaning is causing the rust.

One of the problems with any club heads that have added components.  Owners may not be aware of the microscopic crevasses where water can find its way in and settle.

Those screws should be coated to prevent rust.  Maybe he is using chemicals that have eaten through the coating?

That’s most likely the problem.

air compressor or a hairdryer works well for this. i deal with it all the time cleaning my harley.

compressor is great for the engine fins but i’d bet a hair dryer would work well enough on a golf club if a compressor isn’t handy.

the screw heads, yes. but where the threads of the screw contact the threads of the port are raw.

They shouldn't be.  The threads should be plated like the rest of the head.

even if they are, when you’ve got the two threaded surfaces rubbing against each other the finish is gonna wear off.

Looks like some kind of chemical reaction or extensive soaking caused the issue. I have multiple PXG clubs with weights and have never seen this occur on any of those clubs. I use water and towels, maybe a nylon brush if needed, really don't need anything more than this combination.

Only warm water and nylon brush. I have two other sets of pxg clubs and no issues.

You plate the whole screw.  There is no reason for PXG to remove plating from that area post process.

The pictures to me look like poor plating adhesion causing areas to be unplated.  Further, tungsten shouldn't rust.  Nor should titanium.  Neither have iron in them.  I thought PXG screws were titanium or tungsten?

i would def call PXG about this.  from what I have heard, their customer service is excellent and will do everything possible to make this right especially if this is on the manufacturing side of things.  As @MattC555 mentioned these should not rust at all, no matter what.

It's hard to tell for sure but it looks like the screws are corroding and then bleeding onto the head.  If any of the screws are regular black oxide plated carbon steel then it wouldn't surprise me if they are corroded.  It's best to avoid submerging the heads while cleaning and after finishing, a spray down with WD-40 on the screws would help remove any residual water.

Agree, call PXG they are really good to deal with.  I still have a set of Gen1 irons and they don't have any issues like these.

Yep, only I recently sold my custom Road King. 🙁  I have a very small and long air nozzle that did a great job on the scooter, it's used on the P-car and daily driver too.

You B a lucky man. 🙂

I've had a motorcycle since HS, and a scooter since 1990.  But over the last 20yrs, between the gym, track time with P-car and P-car club and golf, golf club responsibilities, and company's, no time left for scooter riding.  It needed to be ridden.  Best part was it felt good to be able to offer it to a guy that couldn't afford a comparable ride.  He was one helluva happy guy.

This has played 3-4 rounds a week for the last 6 months, plus range time, and I put almost no effort into cleaning my clubs.
