Why? I worked in marketing for years, it was super common that contracts stipulated would could not work from competing companies at the same time. If it was ever in question wether a new client we wanted to take on would be a conflict we needed permission from our primary client we took on the new client.

Being an independent contractor means you can do whatever you want.... until you sign a contract that states otherwise. PGA players agree to the PGA rules when they choose to join the tour. Don't like the rules? No problem you are an independent contractor you can work for someone else.

Yeah but the only reason the PGA Tour can prevent any member from playing a tournament is if that tournament isn't sanctioned by an OWGR recognized tour.  The European Tour dropped the Saudi event from the schedule, but the Asian Tour picked up the tournament. There's literally no reason for the tour to deny these guys a waiver.

Money talks but ironically if the Saudis ever realized their ambition of supplanting the Tour with the Super League, Westwood, Stenson, Fleetwood, McDowell, Kokrak, Na, and Ancer wouldn't be a part of it.

I guess they figure they should grab the money while they can:

  • Westwood- aging and he likely will never claim that elusive major;
  • Stenson and McDowell- also aging and past their primes;
  • Na and Fleetwood- like Westwood, major wins will likely remain unrealized plus Fleetwood can't win in the USA;
  • Kokrak- He apparently is already in the Saudis' pocket.
  • Ancer- I don't know why he would play in this tourney other than making the quick buck.
  • Johnson just seems to be greedy, immensely talented, but greedy.

Throw in geo-political concerns about this event and issues of self respect and image, one wonders how the number of players seeking exemptions got up to eight.

 Really? Forum rules around discussing politics don't allow me to get into some of reasons the PGA might not want players associated with their tour at this event, but that aside the fact the money behind this event and the money behind a potential rival tour are the same, is enough for PGA to want to limit play in the event.

Why would the PGA Tour want to help an event that would be the potential cornerstone of a rival tour?

I am not jumping into the specifics of the politics side, but I agree I doubt the PGA really cares about the politics that much. They care much more about not helping a potential competitor get a leg up. Which brings us back to my first point - why would a business waive a not compete clause for their independent contractors to help the competition? What is in it for the PGA?

Agree, is it the case that all the Asia/ME events that the pga pros play over the years have been Euro tour events?

The pga euro tours have has a working relationship and now I think they are partners.

There’s no reason to approve PGA tour members to play events for a competing tour.

Unless, of course, it’s Tiger.

Pga tour be like,

Yeah, cool TW, great job growing the game!

🤣

Oh please give me a break. The PGA Tour plays a tournament in China (I'm sure you're aware of what goes on there). A golfer on tour should be free to play wherever they want given the event is sanctioned

Yeah, the politics blah, blah, blah kind of loses it's punch when there is already a PGA Tour China, which is part of the PGA Tour's global expansion.

Just say it's about money and millionaires battling millionaires and move on.  Trying to make any political or human rights issues is just ridiculous at this point.

Run it by Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi. Oh that's right you can't because the Saudi prince had him dismembered.

Or maybe you could ask some Saudi adult women for their opinion... but first they'd need to get permission from their male guardian.

I'm not denying that it's wrong. But the PGA Tour doesn't care, as others before me they play a tournament every year in China and have a developmental tour down there. Look it all the guys who teed it up in China 2 years ago. If the PGA Tour is so concerned about human rights, Monahan/members of the tour should stop playing in China every year and having such a large presence there.

Is just a business decision. Including overlooking or not overlooking potential fallout.

In the case of China, the tour makes money, the fallout doesn’t dent the brand, it’s worth pursuing.

Fir the Saudi event, I assume the Euro tour dropped it because the cost of the fallout outweighed the benefits. And it’s hard to see any reason now they would want to help a competitive tour.

DJ will get over it. But I do admire that he “has prioritized defending his title in the Middle East.“

I don't care where the tour plays. It's up to the individuals. The PGA Tour goes to China because it's a business decision and Dustin goes to Saudi for the $$$$.

If Dustin wants to go to Saudi, and dance like these guys after he wins, good for him.

Dude, can't you connect the dots yet ?

Nobody cares whether you care where the Tour plays.

The Saudis are part of a potential Super Tour, which would threaten the existence of the PGA Tour.

China is NOT a competing, or a potential competing, Tour and therefore is NO THREAT.

Would YOU let your star employees (and yes, I know the Tour Players are not employees but the effect is close enough) go to help your competitors put you out of business ?

Of course not !!!

Good grief.  🤦‍♀️

If the SGL is more attractive the PGA Tour needs to up it's game!

pretty sure the reason why the PGA doesn't want its' star players going overseas that week is because it has a dying AT&T pebble beach pro am going on and needs life support.

over the last few years it seems like its gone down hill IMO...
