Protip: When using your rangefinder make sure you haven't accidently changed to meters

I thought I was losing my mind yesterday.  Only took 14 holes to figure it out.  Even though there's an indication right in the viewfinder.  One of those things that's right in front of you but you still don't see it.

Pro tip

If you ever see the letter "M" the reading is in meters.

If you ever see the letter "Y" the reading is in yards.

Never have a problem with yards vs. metres.  At least a couple of times a year I accidentally pick up an object just behind the green instead of the flag and rip one right at the flag only to have it disappear into the "great beyond" and make a big number.

 

Kinda like thinking a hot woman is looking at you and then you realize it's the guy behind you that has her attention.  That's a bogey.

One of the only issues I have with my NX9 rangefinder.  But knowing that is an issue, I’m always checking - especially with wedges!
 

I think on  the newer models the buttons aren’t right next to each other.

I got my daughter and me new rangefinders for Christmas one year.  In March on "spring break" we were playing in Palm Springs with my dadd and she was having trouble with approaches - yep, set to meters!  Still laugh about it.

.. I played with 2 "high rollers" in their early 60's last week betting a whopping .25 cents a hole and one of them changed the others range finder to meters when he went to the bathroom after hole #4. Finally on #16 when he compared numbers to my rangefinder he figured out why he was coming up short all day.  🤪  Good sport about it as these guys evidently use all kinds of tricks on each other and enjoy it BUT it is one of the reasons I always shoot my own yardage with my rangefinder.

Buddy of mine did this for a solid month a few years ago ... thought he had something seriously wrong with him before we figured it out. He was ready to go to Mayo for testing.

I don't even know if the m/y is a consistently visible thing on pro-xe... scratch that,

it's right next to the yardage, I knew it was there on my old one but I couldn't for the life of me remember if it was as visible with the newer one.  😅

I was playing poorly last week and could not figure out why even the shots I struck well were not the right distance.  I was striking the ball so poorly though that I was willing to believe that I was just that far off.  Finally on 15, a par 3, I figured it out when we were talking about yardages and mine was very different than my playing partners.  Really made me feel smart.

Happened to me as well on a Bushnell V4.  Just once, but now I have to check for "Y" every time i use it. 

 

Overall very accurate, but a little disappointed that this happened, as well as the "jolt" technology generally never working.

I wish the button to switch between yards and meters was far less accessible. After all, how often do we need to switch between the two? This is true for just about all rangefinders.

I use both a rangefinder and a GPS watch during a round so I'm more likely to get struck by lightning than get caught up in some m/y shenanigans.

I'm going to be carrying a Golf Buddie and a lazer this year.  We shall see how long before I ditch one or the other.
