Player's iron with most offset

Woodridge

Recommended Posts

Which current or recent player's iron has the most offset? I'm a picker and pretty happy with my T100's. But, I have always liked the look of offset with my irons, having grown up in an era before offset was a dirty word. I doubt that there are any current blades that qualify, but how about one piece forged cavity backs?

If you're not worried about the number stamped on the bottom you could look at Tommy Armour 845's. They are a soft cast. Also the Titleist DCI's blacks.

I play '96 DCI 962's and to me the only thing that really matters is that my irons are consistent and that my gapping is covered from 85 to 205, so while many are hitting their 7 iron 175, I'm happy w/160.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

... When the PXG 0311P Gen 3's went on sale for $129 a club with MMT graphite shafts as a stock option I went in to buy a set. I was shocked at how much visual offset there was in a Players Iron so you might want to take a look at them.

... LOL "dirty word" on golf forums. When I ordered a set off MP33's from the Mizuno rep I asked if they made any custom MP33's with even thinner top lines. The rep kinda chuckled (don't blame him) and he said "No, but we do make several custom sets for Darren Clarke that has a thicker top line as he prefers a meatier look at address". Clarke would have been laughed off WRX. 🤣

Callaway X Forged has a good bit of offset for a players iron.

Also Ping i210. I know a scratch player who plays the ping specifically for offset.

Just an idea would be to get your hands on some 20 year old forged cavity backs with traditional lofts and strengthen 2 or 3 degrees. If they have some offset to begin with, upon completion they might suit the appearance your after.

I struggle with this a lot. Too little offset makes me feel like I'm going to hit the ball with the heel of the club. I play the JPX21 Tours, which look pretty good, but whenever I play with my backup set of Hogan Apex 99', those look look much better to my eye.

I think if you're not Bernhard Langer or Adam Scott, who get custom offset forgings, you're just out of luck. It's really a shame, because with the modern ball, more offset really helps. You see all this craziness with iron shafts now (weight, kickpoints, etc.) I think in some way to compensate for what could be done with a half a turn of offset.

It's a shame that the chunkier top line, offset, short heel-to-toe iron doesn't exist anymore. I know those may be a little harder to hit, but they felt "right" to me. It's probably a factor of what you grew up playing.

However, there is good news, and a perfect illustration of why I so enjoy this forum: I will now buy a set of Miuras. Not because I want to, but because I now have to, because you good people told me so.

Not just Miura, a lot of the Japanese clubs I have seen have this.  Fourteen, Epon, Srixon, and so on, have a bit more offset than your typical players irons in Titleist, TM, Callaway.

Growing up, my first set of golf clubs were Tommy Armour 845s.   I learned to play well with them and had them from around 1989 until the early 2000s.  I had an injury to both my shoulders at the time due to an automobile accident and thought I'd never be able to play golf again.  I sold my clubs.  Long story short, I missed golf and worked to be able to play again.  I bought several sets of clubs over the years in both Nike and Titleist, but no matter how hard I tried, the setup at the ball, and the ball striking didn't match what I remembered with my Tommy Armour 845s.  I began doing research online and actually created a spreadsheet breaking down loft, lie, and offset of each set of clubs I was interested in from 3 iron to PW.  It's amazing how some companies claim you can hit the ball farther with their clubs, but don't mention when comparing specs that the 28 degree 6-iron in their set has the same loft as my former Tommy Armour 845s 5-iron.  Their clubs aren't going farther; they just tweaked their loft so each lower club is the same as former higher clubs - but alas, that's another debate.  Anyways - the conclusion of my research came to this - nothing current in Titleist, or former in Nike, that I preferred or tested, had anywhere near the offset of the Tommy Armour 845s.  However, if you are looking to older clubs, I did find that the Titleist DCI Gold triangle from 1993-1995 that were popular by many, had very similar offset to the Tommy Armour 845s.  For the record, or those curious, I found a set of TA 845s Silver Scots on the Bay and bought them, plan on regripping them, and using them as my gamers.  The nostalgia I feel when I look at the clubs at address give me a confidence I missed with the other sets.  Best of luck finding the clubs you're looking for - and don't be as concerned about what you're playing partners might laugh about, as much as what irons you feel you can game in order to post low scores against them.
