Lol. I couldn't be happier, but this is nuts. Can't belive In Gee had a bogie. Pfffttt. Don't see too many rounds like that. Besides the birdie blitz, she had a number of quality par putts. Flying Dumbos are in heaven. Definitely hoping she can keep it up tomorrow. Don't expect another crazy low round, but the way she's hitting it a 68 is certainly in the cards. 

 

Nice to see a tough par 5.

Yikes, Paige was tad harsh on course setup lol.  They did probably make a bit too long, they can see the radar and they wrecked 3/4 of the morning wave needlessly.  The scores on the 9th when the weather was bad were crazy lol.  Soft course and bad weather in the morning, course should have been much shorter today.  All the top players figured it out, the mid-range and backend player got wiped out.

Since they never show her on TV, I watched her round w Kupcho at the US Open when it aired. She does this strange thing where she stares at the hole vs her ball when hitting long putts.

All players struggle with putting from time to time; they all learn to live with it.

 

Her putting woes started right around 2021 Amundi; it may take a year or two but she'll overcome it.  Her ball striking has been holding up.

I like looking at the hole when hitting longer putts.  (That I have to do that is an indication of how wretched my distance control often is.)

Today was pro-am day. My pro was Emma Talley who I'm familiar with in part because she won the 2013 US Women's Amateur. She was great and her amateur partners, executives at an energy company, were also quite friendly.

 

The course is quite hilly and Emma thought the layout was difficult and long. The green weren't that fast, maybe stimping a 10, but they were decently firm. A lot of the greens have tons of slope so it's not clear how much firmer and faster the PGA will make them.

 

Emma let me try a 12 footer for birder after everyone missed on a par 3; I wasn't watching their putts that closely so I didn't start mine nearly high enough but my speed was good. The coolest moment was when she let me hit a drive with her driver on our 8th hole of the day (one of the caddies also took up her offer). I haven't played golf in a year  so I was very nervous. I hit a slight push fade but the trajectory and distance were impressive looking at least.

 

I may have contributed bad mojo to Emma Talley's putter situation today. 😬 I will say that I've been known to take just my lob wedge with me from the cart if I miss the green, and putting with your LW inside 10 feet is pretty much like using your putter. It's only with longer putts that you might mishit it.

 

This reminds of the 2017 Players Championship, when Rory and Jason Day were paired together on Sunday well before the leaders. They both gave me high fives on their way to 16, probably because they were out of contention, then proceeded to put 3 balls in the water on 17 and 18. 😬

 

My group today of Lexi Thompson, Charley Hull, and Hinako Shibuno was pretty uneventful. Lydia and Jessica Korda were 2 groups in front of us and called for rules officials a few times. The course didn't seem too difficult, though I don't think they moved up any of the tee boxes. Lexi gave the standard bearer and me signed used balls after the round. The most exciting thing was Charley duffing a 3 wood tee shot on her 17th hole of the day; it didn't reach the fairway and she let out a decently loud "F*ck!"

 

I get Nelly, Inbee, and Brooke tomorrow.

In Gee seems to have graphite shafted irons now?  She was a long time user of the Nippon 950GH.

 

Hope she can keep it up (or at least retain her position atop the board); but hitting that much club into a lot of greens seems like she really stole a few (or more than a few) shots today.

Yes, seems like KBS PGi 90 per PING.  I thought PING had pulled her from the website at one point but I guess she is back.

No wind tomorrow in the forecast. The fairways will still be soft so will play relatively close to how they did today. I do think the sub air will firm up the greens some overnight. Going to make my way out there tomorrow, a buddy of mine works for Kupcho

Should be a fun group.  I was listening as to how Brooke and Nelly looked at the scoreboard at one point and they saw In Gee so far ahead that they said to each other that she must be playing a different course.   Both players spoke about how long and difficult the course is -- so that really puts In Gee's round into perspective.

At one point, the on-course reporter commented that her 7-wood was as effective as a wedge for her today.   In her post round interview, In Gee said that she had been preparing for Congressional last month on site and specifically was working on her 7-wood and her 9-wood for approach shots.

The recon work she did last month is definitely paying off.
