It seems most people here should be playing traditional blades . You do realize this is an I series iron . It will have some Tec in it to help the low to mid handicapper . The top line won't be the thinnest it will have an amount of offset . Ping will add the odd screw, cavity, tungsten weight etc because the engineers at ping have found some improvement using a robotic perfectly repeatable swing. I series to me means it will go the distances I need it too, spin the amount I want it too, in a nice neat design. And if they have found a way for me to do that a bit more often with a tungsten screw , multi material construction or magic foam I'm over the moon and happy to trust they know what they are doing.

I think what most people are saying is that Ping could have done a better job of implementing the tungsten weight, screw, and cavity. If this is indeed a prototype as some have suggested, it wouldn't surprise me to see Ping add some milling to the back cavity and hide the tungsten weight a bit better, similar to how Srixon has crafted their irons. If this does not occur and Ping decides to go with the utilitarian look, then we are really just talking about a choice of aesthetic. Some folks like to see the gadgets on the club, other folks prefer the gadgets in the background.

Where I do have concern is in the area of the magic foam. The Ping i200 and i210s have been widely regarded as some of the most consistent irons in the game thanks to excellent spin control. The I210 was never a particularly long iron, but it was always a consistent iron. The addition of a hollow headed design invariably results in a reduction of spin, which means a boost in distance but the addition of distance control concerns. The concern is that the i230 will become a bit like a P770 or other players distance model, whereas previous generations of the I200 series were better likened to players cb irons with a bit of added help.

Ping rep came to our course today for free fittings. No i230. He said he should have it in about a month, then people can get fitted and place an order for an October release… He didn’t sound extremely confident about it though. Said something like “Depending on what Ping decides to do about the release date…”

Because what we are seeing are prototypes. They will release it when it’s perfect. Like ping always does.

Yes these are prototypes. Released in September.

Again these are prototypes.

These are prototypes.

These are the final versions and nothing will change from now until release. These are the words of Christian Pena.

These aren’t prototypes. Ping would never allow “leaked pictures” of prototype irons. Ping staffers would never put prototype irons straight in the bag for a major. These are the i230.

Saw them in the bag of a Champion's Tour player at my club. He was an iBlade devotee, but occasionally put the i210s in the bag. The i230s went straight into the bag.

They look really good and sound fantastic.

I play regularly with another ping staffer and, after he returned from Ping in AZ, he mentioned new forged irons being the next players offering from Ping.

I think it all depends if ping are trying to stick with tradition or make a p790 competitor. I think that is meant to be the job of i525 ,so maybe it is aimed at p770,mp 225 and t200 . With more people looking at distance, strokes gained and launch monitor numbers. I fear it is yards that sell a product. With blue print and as the name implies this is the iron all the other irons will follow. The i59,i230,i525,i425. Should all blend. Why don't ping just have a P for perfect blade, I cavity iron for incisive, a hollowbody starting with N for Nivarna N425 for example, and G for gratification big lots of help iron ,pick your own names of course but, it would make life a bit easier.

My inkling is that you are correct that the I230 will move from being a players cavity to a players distance club, which unfortunately I am not at all happy about. Interestingly, if the i230 is a hollow body, Ping will be the only major brand on the market without a traditional players cavity.

I don't see Ping caring much about being the only company doing or not doing something. I also don't see the i230 being geared more towards the distance club. They have such a good following on the i200/i210 crowd. I would venture to guess its an i210 with some tech, but without the full send into tech like the i525. Ping has made it clear that sound/feel are not one of the levers they want to pull, so having something in between the i59 (average at best iron) and the i525 (an almost there iron). I'd say it's an i210 with a bit more attention towards the better player.

That’s i525

You think Stuart Cink and Hovland and the majority of their staff want to play a players distance iron???  It’s going to play like a players cavity.  Imo

Clubs look great and will definitely try them.

Based on pics and patent figures, it appears that they aren't changing the shape so much as the weighting.  I'm guessing that Ping may say the MOI is higher or the COG is more optimized compared to the i210.

I can't tell if these still have the elastomer, which I think makes the i210 feel really nice.

Should we open the floor to wild speculation on the sole size, width, and shape? Exact same as i210? Smaller in any way?

Dude, why are you concerned about this being a players distance iron? That makes zero sense. It’s the i210 replacement. Is the i210 a players distance iron? And how many guys on tour play a players distance iron from pw-4? I will give you 100-1 odds and bet you $10,000 that it’s not a players distance iron like the p790 or i525.

Agree, there’s no chance they make this a players distance iron.

What defines a players distance iron anyway? Lofts + hollow body?

Either way the i230 will be more like the i210 than it is like the i525…

There is a gap in the backplate from the gapping not being right. Do you think the production models will have that. These are prototypes. I saw them in person at ping. They are no where near finished.

I speculate I’m going to buy a set and play the best golf of my life. As long as it’s not hollow. And as long as the sole and top line aren’t too fat. And as long as there isn’t too much offset.

Given the comment from rep working with Cink, the sole configuration is close to identical to i210.

That was one of the reasons (alongside smaller long irons) that made the switch so easy for Cink.

edit: Sorry, didnt want to stop you from speculating!
