You psychologist clinicians are some interesting cats. I've yet to meet one that isn't. If they offer a tour of the brain of Ferguson, I am getting on that ticket list. And Bscinstnct, I want VIP passes for that one as well, lol.

I am a bit off topic with this little soliloquy I will admit...but I'm feeling a little Friday morning lovefest for the old GolfWrx forums. This place never ceases to cheer me up about the state of the world and the people in it. We are a fine cast of characters on here.

Diamondpar and Blade covered the topic of integrity and I believe no one, current or past, embodies integrity more than Gene.

So what would be Chamblee's (and others) motive for piling on Reed if he's done nothing wrong and is such a likable fellow ? There are plenty of PGA Tour players who have a similar resume to Reed. Why him ?

Exactly. There have always been so many players sticking up for him, pointing out how untrue the rumors are...

Well, let me reintroduce you to a man that never shifted gears.

That man is retired machinist and former WRX member, Gene Cowley.

Gene never bought into mulligans, breakfast balls, inside the rubber gimmes, winter rules, the golf hall of fame, two tie-all tie or equitable stroke control.  He stood up for everything that was right and honest about golf.  He also stood up against the likes of Patrick Reed.  Gene spent his entire work life relying on quality measurements, therefore he felt that a person's true character should be measured on on how that man or woman conducted business on a golf course.

👊👊

“Measure twice and cut once “ he always said. I miss Gene …

Ok, I am going to play clinician for a second. Maybe you'll indulge me. At the least, this should be a good set up for another joke...

Is the idea of Gene representative of your values? a version of yourself that you aspire to be? Or is he a close representation of a comforting figure from your formative years? Maybe the grandfather that took young Ferguson to the driving range, split a large bucket, and bought him a Coca Cola Classic back when they still came rattling out of the old machines in glass bottles.

"The number is the number."

Gene Cowley, 2014

Explains his disdain for Bryson when he came on the scene.  With him the number is never THE number.

one of his more colorful phrases was “ heapdruther “.

as in “ I’d heapdruther watch  beach volleyball than watch Bryson calculate THE  number based on the earths magnetic field for the day , barometric pressure and how much sleep he got last Tuesday “.

i mean that leads us up to the real wisdom of “ when you know , you know “.    Followed by a “ youbetcha “.    Prince of a man , no doubt.

Not trying to #whataboutism on this subject, but during the coverage from Sunday, they showed Scottie Sheffler making a putt.  Somewhere early on in the back 9.  His ball had rolled just over the back of the green, thru the narrow first cut, and just into the second cut.  So the ball was in the taller grass, and the announcers even commented it could be a problem.  I forgot what hole, and I can't find any "full day coverage" on YT to search for it.  And I don't have it dvr'd.

The TV camera was zoomed in a bunch, basically showing his ball in the second cut, with a fair bit of tall grass immediately behind it.  Scotty very clearly set his putter behind the ball, and pushed down on the club which flattened the grass a bit, right behind his ball.  He made his stroke pretty quickly after that, irrc.

I know that you can place your club behind the ball, and the weight of the club can impact a change to the grass, and that is legal.  But you can't put extra force on the club, essentially tamping down the grass.  I had found this from a golf.com article:

It was pretty obvious it was a bit "mush-mush-mushy" with regard to the putter tamping down the grass behind the ball.

Anyone have the coverage still on dvr?

Virtually every tour player who has been in the rough since I have been watching golf(I'm 56) pushes down the grass behind their ball. Some even change clubs and do it again.

I was surprised to learn that the rules state you can compress to grass behind a ball to the extent that the weight of the club (without pushing down) would compress it.

And here people are going worried the golf gods will strike them down if they so much as disturb a blade of grass in the rough ; )

What's more egregious, and you don't see it a lot, is when someone pulls out a fairway wood, addresses the ball in the rough, then "changes their mind" and switches to an iron.

A certain number one player in the world does this a lot. Also seems to REALLY make sure the club is grounded in the rough. Lot of downward force.

Anywho, PReed has cheated, is insufferable, and he has the representation he deserves. Also, I would pay $10 for a pay-per-view MTV Cribs style tour of the Reed home. Wanted to get this thing back on track.

I’d take Chamblee to stop Reed before the fourth. And it wouldn’t take no advice from Bricktop to make me place that bet either.

HMM funny but if I was betting it would be a "pick bet" as in flip a coin to see who I got. I will give both of them their props Brandel for his analysis and Reed for his short game---- But that does not have to mean I like either one of them personally
