its an indoor arena in orlando florida not sure where you got the idea of a chip and putt before every tournament?

Yep, this is winter time, primetime weeknights.  Purpose built stadium for hitting long shots into screens, with a dedicated shortgame chipping/bunker/green complex.  I'm looking forward to it, as I watch plenty of exhibition golf from YT guys hitting into screens to LIV to YT people doing challenges.

 

72 hole stroke play is likely my least favorite format.  So I'll be curious if this team format is best ball, scramble, alternate shot etc.

 

So two teams named thus far, but only the team name and owners.  Nothing yet about what players are playing for the teams.  I half expected them to be paired up by something obvious, like Callaway vs Taylormade.  But perhaps this will be more regional, like Team LA vs Team New England.

On Monday, the TGL announced a multi-year partnership with SoFi Technologies, a digital personal finance company. SoFi is now the presenting sponsor of TGL, and the league’s arena on the campus of Palm Beach State College will be named the SoFi Center.

 

The SoFi Center is a nearly 250,000-square-foot venue that will house nearly 2,000 people at the Palm Beach Gardens Campus of Palm Beach State College. The air-supported dome is 75 feet high and covers the entire playing surface (97 yards by 50 yards). The hitting screen is 46 feet by 64 feet, roughly 20 times larger than a standard simulator screen. The venue also features a 40-yard-wide short game complex with three dynamic putting surfaces on a larger 3,800-square-foot putting surface. And don’t forget the three sand bunkers.

I could see this doing reasonably well because Tiger can't walk 72 holes anymore it seems, so outside of limping around the odd major, so it may be the only place you're guaranteed to see Tiger play live golf. And that has plenty of appeal.

You could put Tiger on a street corner selling t-shirts and it would be picked up by TV.  Meanwhile, the LIV tour couldn't buy TV time from an any major network.  This format keeps Tiger in the game and the TV execs know it will make money.

Yeah my fear is that golfers just aren't that interesting at the end of the day. Like , this will be like watching them play virtual golf like it's real golf. And the better access will just lead to Spieth like "i hit it pretty good, some things went my way today" etc etc...

 

Get them drunk!

 

Otherwise the most interesting matches might be non golfers

If you look at this thing being on ESPN after college/pro football season it makes sense.

 

I mean. What is on ESPN on a Tuesday night at 9pm?

 

Ive seen like corn hole 🤣 ladies basketball, prolly some college bball. 
 

They need stuff to fill in between the bigger events like hockey and pro bball

 

Just having that slot is going to bring a lot of viewers. How many?

 

I took a quick look and ESPN WNBA ratings are like 500k viewed.,

 

I wouldn’t be surprised if this topped that. 
 

But they gotta get some celebrity appearances and definitely explosions 🤣

Then, just continuing on TMRW vs WNBA as a comparison….

 

Just did quick math and it looks like the WNBA pays around 16MM on player salaries over 12 teams. But then there’s all the overhead of staff, coaches, travel, venues for 140 players and 12 teams.

 

With TGL it looks like there’s 18 players total. 6 teams of 3. And 15 matches total. 
 

Figure each team plays 2 matches then the best teams play a playoff and championship. Does that sound right?

 

So, maybe they pay each guy a million bucks to play 2-3, 2-hour matches indoors. No bad if they also get a “piece” of the team 🤣

 

That’s 18MM I’m salaries, about the same as WNBA with wayyyyy less additional staff/overhead.

I think Mtljeff counted towards some of those WNBA numbers! 

 

I'll tune in for sure I just hope the guys can relax and have some fun, it would be way more interesting. I've said in the past I thought a virtual league could be fun and a good way to showcase some of these guys. So this is basically that. But a lot will depend on how the guys act. Make some jokes, give them beer. Etc

Interesting that Tiger said on that range interview recently that you should try to hit balls on an actual range whenever possible because simulators don’t let you see the real ball flight.

Maybe they will do it like American Gladiator and have Blazer shooting tennis balls at you while you are trying to drive. I would totally watch that.
