Comcast (owners of NBC Universal, Peacock, GC, etc.) is looking to cut $1 billion from its network operating costs. This article explains it in more detail.

 

It wouldn't surprise me if Comcast sold GC to the PGA Tour so they can have their own television network. Which the PGA Tour has wanted for some time. They simply buy GC, rebrand it and continue on. A big portion of the new television deal the PGA Tour just began in 2022-23 is still heavy on being on cable. There are millions and millions of people that have not switched to streaming of any kind.

Ironically the golf channel started going downhill with the that reality show Pipe Dream imo. It was impossible to like that guy and that was before people became aware of his history. The only positive for the golf channel was their department that does any vetting got a lot better after that train wreck haha.

I don't have any issues with the Golf Channel.  If it has something on I want to watch, I watch it, if not, I don't.  I often have it on in the background or while eating just in case something interesting is being broadcast or gets broadcast.  There was a very nice piece on Camilo Villegas yesterday that I just happened to tune into.  If it went away, it wouldn't have a big impact on my life, but if it stays, I'll still enjoy watching it from time-to-time.  All of our tv is through streaming, but I don't think I'd stream golf channel specifically if it was a separate fee.

Sometimes I put on a dress shirt, make myself a cup of International Coffee, curl up with Mrs. Ferguson and celebrate our best memories of the greatest golf channel productions.

GC can sell commercials for PGAT events. The DPT and LPGA aren't getting the revenues to justify showing it especially during prime time. If they had a better product and fans got into it then they'd get more exposure.

Comcast needs to cut costs cause their "innovations" haven't panned out.  Color me shocked.

 

My only question about them selling the channel to PVB is, how much of the rights fees come from GC?  Because essentially they would be paying themselves, no?

It is sad how downhill TGC went once NBC got involved. It was palatable, now it is like a TMZ episode. 30 Mins worth of talk 5 mins of golf, the rest is advertisement. I understand that ad's pay the bills , but the talking heads don't. I am glad that there are other avenues, much to the PGA Tours anger, to get replay's.

The thing is there is a ton of great golf content on Youtube or Instagram. It's not like you can't make programs about golf enjoyable or funny, there's content that does all of that....

 

Golf Channel literally is a golf channel and came up with basically none of it

it’s a serious cultural loss to our sport imho 

 

If anyone doesn’t think Golf is in trouble…they are not paying attention.  The big money moved in in 97…and we are left floundering in the vacuum now that it’s gone.

You wouldn't be happy if GC was gone either. I never knew the European Tour existed before them. My only complaint is they should have more instruction. Even playing lessons from the pros is only about course management. We want the good stuff!
