Not really.  My brother has the 21 version and he is always gets the occasional “hot flyer” scorcher.  It doesn’t bother him at all though.

I have them now and play them.  I have never experienced this.  Well, can’t say never but never in a situation that doesn’t warrant a possible flyer.  I haven’t had any unexpected stuff I should say.   I spin a lot and these get plenty of spin for me.   They are just a great fit for my game.

That’s great!  As with all equipment, different strokes for different folks.

Less spin than the stealth’s? Steering very clear of these, why on earth would they do that

Agreed Bob. Per this data, it seems like they are very similar, except for the aesthetic improvements. Even the release articles didn't have much to say about tech differences.

I think the smart move could be to find a deal on the prior gen 790s (if available) and likely get the same performance out of them.

They were fixed on the 21 version.

Agreed. No issues whatsoever with flyers on the ‘21.  I basically hit a perfect 9 iron for me on Sunday, so much so that my playing partners commented on how pure it sounded (not something I hear often…). If there are flyers, I would have seen it on that shot. Yet it went exactly how I wanted it to go. YMMV.

The wait is over, kinda disappointed now. I'm sure they are nice as different reviews/videos will all show different results so if they fit your game and your happy with them it won't matter what anyone else thinks about them. They are yours so go enjoy them

As a happy owner of the ‘21 P790’s I’m seeing zero reason to even look at/try these “new” offerings from TM.

I experience fliers with all models. Usually happens with the perfect swing mechanics and perfect sweet spot contact.

I think TXG did a video once while reviewing a club (maybe it was another YT channel), but basically explained that clubs don't have random "hot spots" that cause fliers.  There's just no such thing from a club design perspective.

Clubs have sweet spots, and obviously different parts of the club face will naturally provide different levels of spin, ball speed, and launch angle.  But when you just isolate face impact point as the only variable, spin, ball speed, and launch angle are very consistent for each individual point of the club face, especially the sweet spot.

Where spin, ball speed, and launch angle can vary on the sweet spot is when the golfers angle of attack, face to path, or possibly grass between the club face and the ball are also variables that are not controlled.  And large variations in spin, ball speed and launch angle is what causes some shots struck on the sweet spot to go much farther than others.  Draw shots have more ball speed and less spin than straight shots or fade shots.  Knock down shots with a steep angle of attack and a low point well in front of the ball will impart far more spin than a shot teed up with a level angle of attack and low point right at point of contact.

Better golfers are more consistent with their ball striking to control their angle of attack, face to path, and low point, so they see much less variation in their expected spin, ball speed, and launch angle.  As a result, they see less variation in their expected carry distances.  Golfers who are less consistent with their ball striking will naturally see more variations in their distances, but that's not necessarily a problem with the club that needs to be fixed and addressed in an updated model.  All golfers can still experience fliers out of the rough because there is nothing they can do to remove grass between the face and the ball at impact that will reduce spin.

Players distance and game improvement irons are designed with technology to reduce spin, increase ball speed, and increase launch angle (thinner faces, hollow body, tungsten, etc.) to gain more distance, so those types of irons are by nature susceptible to more variation in spin and ball speed if the user is not consistent with their ball striking.  You can't have your cake and eat it too.  If you want to avoid having shots on the sweet spot spin 20% lower than your ideal shot, either strike the ball more consistently with angle of attack, face to path, and low point or move to an iron set that isn't as focused on low spin, ball speed, and launch angle so that the outlier differences in your ball striking might only reduce spin by 10%.

Plenty of club testing out there that shows this pattern.  Where a tester uses something like a t100 and avg spin is 6500, with a standard deviation of 250 rpms, and the "outlier" low spin shot is 5800 (700 rpm difference from avg or 10.7%).  Then they test the T400 type game improvement iron and avg spin is 4800, with a standard deviation of 300 rpms, and the outlier low spin shot is 3900 (900 rpm difference from avg or 18.8%).

I don’t think this one chart tells the story though.  Now I’m not suggesting you should see massive change but look at the strike differences and ball flight differences between the two in this chart:

There’s a new Micah Morris YouTube where he is playing the new 790s.

He plays nine holes. It’s sort of like an infomercial, but I didn’t take anything that he said during the 9 holes to be untrue.

I'm sure TM didn't roll out the red carpet to fit him and give him new clubs in exchange for his unbiased opinion.  Nothing against Micah...I like his content, and there's nothing wrong with promoting a product when you're public about your relationship with the company.

New review from Michael Newton golf...P790, 7 irons vs 2021 P790

Higher club speed = more ball speed and low spin = more distance

No noticeable difference in feel or sound

0.4 mph clubhead speed equals 2.6 mph ball speed.

also higher launch, higher peak, higher landing angle, and 5 yards for a 0.4mph CHS increase. So you’re saying the new version is magical.

on a serious note, Ian from CC said he feels this is the best P790 yet. Is someone in the 21 version going to spend $1000 for it? Probably not. But the 2017 may see a bigger benefit

I saw that video.  That was the most accurate (left/right and front/back) I’ve seen him hit clubs on any video in the last 2 years

Yeah I noticed that too! He’s usually all over the course.

The question is does his pride get in the way to give them an honest chance.

I know Grant Horvat switched to the P770s for their forgiveness. In my book he’s a much better ball striker than Micah.

Prodigious speed and loads of talent.  Can’t seem to find the right fit.

His video makes me want to hit the 790s.  They no longer look like they performed like missle launchers

  • 2 weeks later...

Tested the new p790s today, and my average spin was around 6000rpm

I won't show you guys the rest of the full set of numbers, because I'm still having lessons and working on improving 😅

Did have a couple in the low 4000s though, one of them for sure was a mishit.

Probably my best shot of the lot: 5740rpm - 45.30 descent angle - Carry 149 - total 159

Are there any more reviews out there with spin numbers available?

Or does anyone else want to share what spin numbers they were getting in testing?
