I was attending the event in person. In my opinion the PGA Tour made a huge error in course maintenance. Now we are forced to halt play on 53 holes because the green on 1 hole was cut too short. It is a tragedy because 95% of eyeballs were on Pebble today anyway, in my estimation 99.999% of spectators and TV viewers want to see play continue at Pebble regardless of what is happening on one green miles away at MPCC.

Due to wind + conditions + pin position, balls on MPCC 9 were not able to hold the green, making the hole into kind of a circus. Now you might argue that PGAT is not responsible for wind, but they are responsible for conditions and pin, if wind is expected to be up (and it's winter at Pebble with mild storm conditions) then you know wind is going to be up, so you should let the green grow out. PGAT wants fast greens though so they took the risk and they paid the price.

So due to PGAT rules, one hole is unplayable, therefore all golf must stop across all three courses, which is a major PITA because (1) Pebble was perfectly playable (though tough conditions admittedly) and (2) Pebble is where all the spectators + cameras + "A Team" (celebs and pros) are, MPCC is kind of an afterthought. So you're telling the people out at the course (and the people at home) so sorry, you can't watch your golf because a single hole at the other course a few miles down the road is unplayable because we screwed up, have a nice trip back home.

If PGAT didn't want to let the pros play Spy and Pebble then they should have just let the amateurs play alone today.

The answer, right here.

I'd read today that they were going to play Monday, and thought, "Jeez, rained out again?!"  But instead the reason is because it's windy and you idiots decide to embrace your inner USGA and screwed up the green on a hole?  (Obviously, I haven't been following the action.  Stupid work...)

Windy?!  You play the tournament by the ocean, for Chrissakes!  In winter.  It's supposed to be windy in February!

Ugh.

Maybe they should move the tournament back to Poppy from MPCC, if this sort of thing can happen?

Alternately, what's the rule if, for instance, a tree were to fall mid-round and destroy the area of the green where the cup was?  Is removing the tree, cutting a new hole location, and playing on, an option?

Maybe they should move the tournament out of early Feb so they don't have to deal with this kind of weather

Exactly...same weather we've been having at this time of year in this part of California for the past few hundred thousand years.

Kind of foreseeable...

Based on the diminishing fields every year, I suspect they are going to blow up the format within the next few years and stick to pros only on Spy + Pebble (same format as 2021).

If a tree were going to fall, it would have fallen a few weeks ago when it basically rained / stormed for 3 consecutive weeks. So it's pretty unlikely. The weather this weekend isn't really all that bad compared to what we had a few weeks ago, we're fortunate in that regard.

My prediction for today is that they play through the weather to finish the 3rd round, then pack it in for the day and start the 4th round tomorrow morning. Weather looks good for tomorrow, should be a good final round.

Come on man, it's the Monterey micro-climates. Getting more and more extreme due to climate change as well. Blowing 40 on one hole and calm 3 miles away, we only have ourselves to blame🤪

You are not allowed to comment on the validity of golf courses anymore

Haha, that’s funny. I do think Sam looked pretty ridiculous and I personally wouldn’t wear Jordan’s on the course. But also doesn’t bother me if someone does. Nice to see some variety out there.
And I don’t think I so much comment on the validity of courses or tournaments. I’d say I just see and focus on the positive aspects of ‘em instead of all the negatives. I realize that’s not very “WRXey” of me! Haha. Heck, rare these days in general from what I see.

I picked the tree, as a hypothetical for a given hole location becoming unplayable mid-tournament and mid-round, as evidently MPCC Shore #9 became due to an act of Nature. (Or was it #9 on Dunes?  As I wrote earlier, I'm not paying the closest of attention to this.)  I.e., how does a Tournament Committee usually handle this kind of situation?

I'd think cutting another hole on #9, and preserving Saturday eyeballs and $ for the Network and Tournament, would be better than the solution they chose instead, and I was curious how other tournaments and clubs handled similar situations---a hole which becomes unplayable mid-round.
