Hate 3 wood, what's the longest Hybrid cannon.

Malc

Recommended Posts

a 5 wood - the Mizuno ST-G 5 wood.

Or if you insist on a 'hybrid' then the Callway Super Hybrid - there is a 16 deg but get the 18degree one if you prefer to a 5 wood (some may say the Cway Super hybird is 'too big'... that's kind of the point - it's bigger than a normal hybrid but smaller than a fairway wood - with a shorter hyrbid shaft length).

Both of these options are Titanium which is costly but ups the performance - i've the 21 degree Super Hybrid to replace a Toru Edge 7 Wood and it's a lovely thing.

Havent seen it mentioned, but I just dropped my TM S2+ 3 wood (@ ~14*) for my Sim2 Plus 2h turned down to ~16*. losing about 3-4 mph BS but lower spin and flatter launch makes up for it. For me it is the perfect fairway finder and much easier to punch through any wind. Don't ever really try to hit it into greens and should be laying up if that yardage comes up.

Currently playing a T100S 3i as my other long club, but not sure if that will last or go to a 4hy or something similar.

I hate 3 woods as well and just carry a mini driver now, but I have a Ping G425 (I'm sure G430 is just as good if not better) 2-hybrid, and it's a fantastic club. I custom ordered a slightly longer shaft from Ping and lofted it down to 15.5 degrees, basically making it a 1-hybrid or "driving hybrid", and I love it on a deep level.

I'm also going to vote for G430 2 hybrid. I play a 4 and 5 hybrid and needed something to bomb. Tried to get fitted for a 5 wood but the fitter said my angle of attack doesn't suit it and should try a 2 hybrid which I was a bit apprehensive about. Turns out to be a great decision, the thing is so forgiving. I have to loft it up a little right now until I get used to it but will bring it back to 17 when I get used to it.

I don't think there is a wrong answer when it comes to which brand for a given degree loft. Anything in the 15-17° range with some weight adjustments will tend to be a hammer.

I went from the Super Hybrid 17° to the 0311 17° 2-Hybrid, and subsequently snagged a 2-Wood given that the hybrid competes easily with a 3-Wood. It's got a nice and solid feel and I put an 88g (before cut-down) shaft in it.

Center strikes are handsomely rewarded. At the sim (my only measurement) during a fitting I was netting 250 total yards with it which was nice. Course distance isn't always going to be so.... kind. 😄 Yet it definitely qualifies as a 3-Wood stand-in.

I went with the Tour Edge e722 hybrids last year. Best hybrids I have gamed..I also game their C721 4 wood.

Have you given thought to a 4w or even a 5w?

I bag the E722 fairway woods. They are stupid easy to hit. Tour Edge is awesome for Hybrids and Fairways.

The Tour Edge CBX 119 was a bomber for me at 16°

I agree TEE is awesome for fairway woods and hybrids

IMHO the Callaway UW is going to be hard to beat

But honestly most 2 hybrids from major brands are going to go pretty far if you're comfortable with them and able to swing hard

I’m in the same 3w predicament, again! Ditching the 3HL Paradym to go back to the Srixon 2H. Distance wise on the best strikes a 10-15 yard gap, consistency isn’t close. Works equally well off the deck and the tee.

Also have you tried a 5wood?

... or a 4W? I have been playing 4W + 7W since 2012.

A local guy pro I work with is an excellent instructor and clubsmith. He split the difference: put a 5W head on a 4W-length shaft. Result: a single fairway wood that only flew about 15 yards shorter than a 3W, but with much more reliable trajectory.

A 4W or 5W has a couple of extra degrees of loft than can make all the difference in the world in achieving a reliable launch.

The Cleveland Hy-wood. The new version just dropped.  17*.  Reports are the ball speeds are fantastic.  Not as sexy as a Callaway, but their stuff flat out performs.

I'll check these out online. My car is out of action stuck at a friggin garage for 2 weeks so i'm scuppered for a bit. Presently i have a TEE 722 3 wood but just cannot get it to sit or look right even though it has a ton of adjustment. Before that i had a 15 degree fixed Sonartec. Have just lost confidence in 3w's.

Take a look at the Callaway Apex 17* UW. Sits open and an upright lie but very hot off the face. If you want something with more adjustability you can pick up a Callaway 17* Super Hybrid which is adjustable off CPO pretty cheap.

How easy is the UW to hit? I bought a G410 2 Hybrid to solve the 3W problem, but its 17* and I cant hit it to save my life (consistently). Little too ambitious of a purchase with that one lol
