Anti-left 225 yard hybrid

LowDime

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow Wrx's.  I am looking for suggestions for an anti-left 4-5 hybrid to replace 4 iron that i can carry 215-225.  I have yet to find a hybrid i can hit that does not go left. 13ish handicap.  I have a sim 7 wood that either goes 220 or 250 so need something more consistent

I like the TSR3 because you can move weight towards the toe. Also consider a shorter/heavier shaft that gets it playing closer to a long iron than a fairway wood.

If you carry a 4-iron 215-225 yards...... keep it.

Hybrids of 21* loft or higher are designed for players who dot not have  the swing speed to hit high trajectory long iron shots.

Don’t really agree. There are tour players with 170-180 ball speed that play 5 hybrids.

In terms of the OP, I would get something that is higher spinning. For me the g430 was very low spinning and for me , shots with too low spin tend to hook more often so while yes you can open the face or play it flat, the extreme low spin of it did bring left into play IMO.

If he was happy with his 4 iron he wouldn’t be asking this question, would he? I don’t know any 13 handicaps that hit a 4 iron consistently regardless of speed.

I have plenty of speed and love my 21* hybrid.

I have had issues with left on hybrids and tended to carry a 2 or three iron instead.  That said, the Callaway Alpha 815 18 degree.  (2 iron replacement), with a Tensi White has been great in avoiding the lefts.  A miss with it is actually a low fade for me, which is worlds better than a hook that keeps going left.  The best part, is you can probably find one dirt cheap, since they are circa 2015…. YMMV

I’m in the same boat.
I think it’s an adjustable 3 hybrid with a blue board type shaft in 80S.
If there is no wind/ down wind  the 7 wood is awesome.
I think you need a 90 gram shaft with a stiff tip in the 7 wood work in most conditions.

I've had good luck with the Srixon ZX Hybrids

I regret parting ways with my ZX 4hy. The best shot I’ve hit over the past 5 years was with that club. 226 2nd shot into a par5 that launched with a baby draw and rolled to 4ft from the pin. It’s tattooed in my brain.

I bought one from 2nd Swing on a whim after fighting the hooks with the Callaway Apex hybrids. It has an excellent ball flight and doesn't have the left miss of most hybrids. You really can't beat them for the consistency or price.

Callaway Apex Pro, only hybrid I've ever liked. Small profile and has some fade biased internal weighting

The two hybrids that come to mind when looking to avoid a hook for the better player are the TSR3 and ST-Z 230 for the adjustability and internal weighting.  Nothing will stop a bad swing from snap hooking, but these both tested well for me.  Still put the Mizuno in the bag when I need a higher flighted ball for rock hard greens.

I have the ts3 for this reason, I can put the weight in the toe.

I also struggled with hybrids once they stopped making steel shafts until I went for a heavier shaft similar in weight to steel. Since then I’ve stopped hooking my hybrids.

PXG hybrids, they have a flat -1 setting like a Ping plus you can move the heavier weight into the toe to make it fade biased.

First hybrid that I haven't had left issues with.

I'll second this. I have mine in the PXG setting, which is actually 3 degrees flat. 20g of weight in the toe. You can go after it and not worry about that dreaded hook.

Given the perimeters you provide, don't think your swing is in sync with the goal of being more consistent.  It's not so much the club head that causes left or a 220 to 250 spread, it's the shaft, playing length combined with swing.

I find that when I started playing my hybrids and woods at shorter lengths, that lessened the tendency to go left, and tightened up my distances greatly.

I play my hybrids at the  iron length it is replacing, and I play my woods shorter that off the rack. My 4w is 42” and my 7W is 41”, this allows me to better control distance and reigns in the dispersion as well.

Unless it’s a game improvement, draw bias hybrid, the problem is in the ability to deliver a consistent and proper strike.

people have mentioned the Callaway Apex 2016….. I could hook that fairly easy when I played it over length, but when I cut it down to 39.5”, my left miss was substantially reduced, my ball speed, launch, and carry distance, became far more consistent

I’m in the process of testing out a 20° hybrid that is 39” a 24.5° hybrid, that is 38.5” and two 7 woods. My gamer 7w is 22° at 41” and the new one is 21° at 42”. I had a few hooks with the 21° at 42” until I choked up an inch, the problem is that I now need a head weight, because it’s too light ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think any players hybrid that has the right playing length, weight and shaft profile would mitigate the left miss.
