never thought I’d ever lose interest in pgatour golf

I agree it's not the same, but watching some of the unknowns fight for a first win has been more entertaining than I thought it would be.

Jordan nailed it. As long as the golf is competitive. There’s new names we have to get used too.  The debate on shotgun starts and 54 holes, and OWGR golf rankings continues on another thread.
It’s just sad that it fractured golf so much.

True.  As a huge wrestling fan before I took up this game this reminds me a lot of the Monday Night Wars from the mid to late 90s when WCW (backed by Ted Turner) was butting heads against Vince McMahon's WWF.  Ted Turner lured the big names wrestlers from the WWF (Like Hulk Hogan, and Randy Savage) with huge guaranteed contracts (just like LIV) and other smaller names followed giving the WWF a huge hole in talent.  WCW was doing quite well with their nWo angle around 96-97 and at one point almost pushed the WWF into bankruptcy.  But McMachon reinvented his own company and took it into a different direction with controversial story angles which eventually became well known in the wrestling industry as the Attitude Era and created a whole new generation of big names to replace the ones that left (like Stone Cold Steve Austin, HHH, and some guy named The Rock).  The WWF's turnaround was so successful, they eventually bought out WCW in 2001 and became a wrestling monopoly till this day.

If you don't understand what I just said I'm just trying to say that the PGA tour will have to reinvent themselves and create a new crop of big names to replace the ones that defected to LIV.  Who knows, maybe history will repeat itself and the PGA tour will totally buy out LIV one day, not just some weak partnership.

Yup.

depth of field.  I’ve said this in another thread, but we are just seeing the explosion of talent and athletes that are in the development pipeline.

Guys get rich, lose the drive ... younger, hungrier guys move up the food chain.

If you want to watch a bunch of "names" fight it out, turn over to LIV.

Agree - and it will happen on its own; Scheffler / Hovland / Clark / Aberg / Theegala / Min Woo… none were household names 5 years ago - and nowadays most golf fans know them… people complain about a Knapp / Eckroat / Dunlap leaderboard right now but they might end up being the next crew, not knowing the next big gun had its first win in 2024… time will tell

So true

I have a slightly different take on this that hasn’t been mentioned yet. You guys are just getting old. I mean that jokingly of course but as an 18 year old I see the dynamic differently. Like any major sport people hate to see their heroes retire and new guys come in. People talk about how much better the old guys were or how great leagues used to be. Liv has highly talented golfers but more than anything they have older golfers with majors and name recognition. Golf is odd as any given day someone can pop off a good result but in a general sense someone like Sergio Garcia isn’t gonna be world number 1 regardless of what tour he’s on. But he has name recognition and “earned” that respect from the older crowd. Theres a number of up and coming golfers on the PGA I think are way more talented but the problem is that they don’t have that name recognition yet. What LIV essentially did was take all of those guys who had that respect and name recognition of an older viewership and thrust the young PGA guys into the lime light before they could earn it through consistent results, media deals, major wins, etc. If the tours stayed together these guys would still become phenomenal. However, they aren’t able to earn respect by taking it away from those older players since they all ran to liv for money.

You can not say the pga is less competitive because if you just look at any leaderboard and the spreads between players they are much tighter. Liv lacks the glue guys and up and comers so its basically which of their big ticket guys has there game together and which ones will be 5-10 strokes behind. But the flip side is saying Brooks Koepka won a tournament seems more impressive than saying Austin Eckroat won a tournament even if they are equally as good on the day.

Pretty good take for a youngster. 👍

liv comes along and poaches a bunch of good players so you're going to punish the PGAT?

Seems like you'd want to throw them some support rather than abandon them.

Y'all are giving greg his lifelong goal of trying to destroy the PGAT. Take over professional golf.

Tell greg and his backers to buzz off and it wouldn't be too long before we have everyone playing together again. It's the only way it's going to happen.  Otherwise, it just gets worse (more diluted) and worse.

Bit of the same boat but I haven't been a big watcher in quite some time. My interest is waning even further though which is mostly due to the exorbitant cost of entry. I'll still tune into the majors, but the rest is just something to put on if I'm home doing nothing, which is very rare.

I’ve never considered the pga tour as “golf”, it’s entertainment. If you’re into that sorta thing.

Golf is sneaking in 9 holes because you’ve gotta play, course and weather be damned. Golf is hitting a bucket on the back of the range alone. Golf is a fist bump w/ strangers over a good shot.

That's got the makings mid-range beer commercial.

Nice work, and welcome to WRX.

So if you watch a PGAT event and someone asks what you watched over the weekend, you’ll say what, the PGAT show? I always say “golf”. Am I doing it wrong??

This morning involved coffee and watching the start of this tourney.  9:15, off to the range for an hour of working on stuff.  Back to the house, lunch with golf on.  Back to the course shortly for 18 holes.  I’m not addicted.
