What is Bryson’s bulge?

Recommended Posts

Not that my game is a pro quality but hybrid irons have taken me to hitting 10 to 12 GIR with a 8.6 hcin . Usually I was closer to 6 or 7. Just haven’t got a putter.

Weird that in the article the spokesperson notes "he's not an investor in the company" to insinuate he has nothing to gain from the company getting exposure. He may not have given them cash, but he does have equity in the brand and will do nicely if they somehow take off.

There's a post in Pre-release Equipment about them that's been going on for two months or so.

Apparently Bryson has been working on irons that have a bulge on the face like woods do. On Tuesday they were approved for play in USGA governed events. He’s been using them in the rec league and his girs have been much better than when he was on bye PGA Tour.

FYI, he has not been using them in LIV.  He was playing his Pings last week.

The new irons just passed the USGA conforming test Monday.

They gave him a stake in return for him letting them develop a club line for him and him putting them in play. In the article it's mentioned that the brand started as a tinker's site project. They don't have tons of cash available so he got an equity stake instead. I'd assume a pretty large one.

so its kind of like how early employees at startups have stake but arent investors unless the company is successful enough to go public.

Similar, yes. Bryson or the employees are still never investors regardless of how it turns out though because no external dollar value is placed on whatever time & energy they've put in. The article is correct that Bryson isn't an investor because he hasn't infused cash but he 1000% is a stakeholder with a vested interest in how the company performs based on him showcasing their irons.

He's not playing them solely for the benefit, if any, they bring him on the course. Could turn out they offer a competitive advantage due to unique characteristics like the screws or tolerances of 3D metal printing or they could be equal or worse than other offerings, though I'll give the benefit of the doubt that BDC wouldn't play with underperforming gear. Really doesn't matter as all this attention including the late USGA approval means they are now the most talked about single length irons out there and are likely going to bring nice margins for the company which means a nice payday for Bryson if they're moving enough units.

Reading through the golf digest article it doesn't sound like he has any stake in the company. The designer is a friend of his coach. He went to him with an idea and they figured out how to produce them because large oems aren't going to create a new design for a one off. It looks like Bryson put his own money into getting them made. There isn't any reference to what is in his bag on their site. They have a single length iron but it is a completely different design.

If it turns out he's getting no compensation--and there's no way with the company's presence and pricing the have the dollars to pay directly--while bringing them more buzz than they've ever had color me surprised as can be. Maybe they just have the goods and he doesn't mind them sharing info about the irons when people from here and elsewhere have inquired.

Admittedly it's all speculation around him having a stake because the details have been so sparse. The GD article has no discussion of that at all so I'm guessing you mean the one from GW. If he's helped pay for the development and given them this much airtime but is getting zero in return both he and his agent are asleep at the wheel. Just makes little sense knowing he jumped ship from the Tour for a paycheck and could easily be cashing in on this. Considering he and one of his team created the CAD files for them he'd be a loon to have given that away.

Ok I am going to ask something VERY stoopid, but how are iron's 3D-printed? How could they withstand that much pressure 'cause we know he is hitting them hard.

Go easy on please....

So what’s the deal, are these clubs made of plastic?  Or were they 3 D printed and then used that to make a mold for metal. I’m confused.
