How many times have you shot your lowest score ever?

A buddy of mine says your lowest score isn't necessarily your best score.

He may have a point... shot 69 (-3) at least 6 times over the years on  6,000 to 6300 yd courses. shot 70 (-2) at 6900+ yds a couple of times.

Very true, yardage or conditions can limit score potential. My lowest is -5 but that is with low wind, firm fairways and soft greens on a course I've played hundreds of times. My best might actually be a 76 at kingsbarns in 30mph winds first time seeing the course. Birdied 15 into a 4 club wind with a 40 foot bomb.

2 under .......three times.    The course has a pretty easy slope rating so I never felt like it was that great a accomplishment.

 

Shot some 74-75 scores on more difficult courses that felt far more rewarding to me.

Whenever I eventually break par for the course or my will to play dies, I'll get back with ya.  🙂  I've shot 72 a couple times.  I feel an under par round percolating in my near future.  (I hope). Heck, I may shoot my age in the next 5 years.  The scores don't go down, my age is always going up.

Hard to recall for sure but I'm pretty sure just once. I know 75 is my lowest score ever and I clearly remember that round, several years ago. Don't think I ever did it again. I've had a couple of 76's and a couple of 77's but no other 75's. . 

 

But the 75 was out of the blue. I don't think I broke 80 for six months before that round and not again for at least six months after. Just played well tee to green and make about a metric mile of putts. Probably the best putting day of my life, as well as personal best score.

 

Here's when I knew it was just "meant to be" that day.

 

Hit one of the longest drives of my life on the 17th hole:

 

1) Only had an 90-yard wedge approach on a hole where I'm usually hitting from 40 yards farther out

2) I blade said wedge 40 yards over the green

3) Hack back to the green out of the rough but leave the ball 50 feet from the hole

4) Roll in the putt for a no-sweat par (my second 40+ footer of the back nine, plus a chip-in on the front nine)

61 lowest ever. Have shot 63 a handful of times. One of those stands out in my mind as the best round of golf I’ve played. 20+ mph winds all day and course played around 7500 yards. 9 birdies 9 pars, didn’t miss a shot.
 

65 lowest tournament round a couple times.

Have to break this up into phases of my life.  In my post-kids, post-shoulder surgery life, been 65 once and 66 a few times on 72 courses.  I am usually a 4-5 handicap, so these are rare rounds for me.  I shoot at every pin and can get super hot with the putter, so I can have flurries of birdies and if I can avoid a big miss or blow up then scores can be low.

 

The 65 was on an easy course for me and I did not even know that I did it until we got into the restaurant to settle up our meaningless bets.  It was right after the Pebble Beach major a handful of years ago and we were joking that you have to make all of your birdies early (the announcers said it a million times on TV) and I birdied 8 of the first 9 holes with a bogey.  Mixed and matched a few birds and bogeys on the back.

 

I had a 30 once on 9 holes.  That is likely my low 9 hole score.  All of my friends got to see it too... the best.

Once it was a 73.  Had 6 birdies.  It was 28 years ago.  I was probably a 14 hcp.  Next best was a 75 also once.

But a friend of mine, who is really good, has NEVER broken 70. Been on track many times just to fumble it every time. It's like a mental block for him, find it so fascinating.

I have never broken par in my life.

 

I blame it on my approach to the game - just way too conservative, I guess.  I rarely go for it on par-5 holes and never try to aggressively bang in birdie putts.

I played in the Carlton Woods Invitational a couple times about ten or so years ago. Loved it.
