I have...and I couldn't disagree with you more. A wonderful course that will kick your tail if your game is just the slightest bit off.

That’s not how I would enjoy a round of golf. Especially if I am traveling to go play it. Getting your teeth kicked in if your game isn’t perfect? Not my idea of wonderful .

 

Now watching pros play it is a different story, I’m enjoying watching them get their teeth kicked in. Nice change of pace.

I wonder if he tried going down the rabbit hole that Bryson did with distance chasing.  Rory admitted doing it, and said it took him some time to get back to normal after that pursuit.

Indeed. It seems people are so used to the players bombing it 300+ with little worry about the rough that they get upset when the parts off the fairway can be detrimental to your score.

 

Hitting a shorter club or a fairway finder is also risky since the approach becomes longer and the greens ain’t holding that.

I’ve never been to Pinehurst but as a hacker I get frustrated by a course that consistently takes what I consider a good shot for me and makes it into a terrible result. I’m not a golf architecture nerd either but it seems to me that #2 has a strange combo of tee to green not being particularly difficult for these guys - wide fairways, no water in play, little tree trouble - but then makes the green complexes ridiculously difficult. And to make it worse, it’s not as if some of them are tough but are interspersed with relatively easy ones - they all seem extreme.  I just don’t enjoy watching events here.

Yeah he’s been growing on me a bit lately. He’s still a little awkward and off putting at times, but his enthusiasm for the game is genuine and that’s hard not to relate to.
