Does anyone still game Ping Eye 2's?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

I read where the USGA teamed up with other manufacturer's to find ANY technicality with the Eye 2's to knock them off the tour. Solheim fought like hell against the USGA. In the end....the other makers obtained a verdict to diminish Karsten's wildly successful Eye 2's to make room for all the other wanna-be's.

Sounds like an interesting read. Care to share where it is?

There's an entire history about the USGA vs. Karsten. He settled, but it hurt Ping for some time. Some like myself believe the other makers were jealous and pressured the USGA, while others said the tour was fearful the Eye 2's would make the game "too easy". So they invented the V vs. U groove spin rate issue to push it over the edge.

Since he read about this conspiracy(as per post #1219) i was really looking forward to reading up on it, only to be disappointed (as per post #1223) that it's just his belief with no evidence and nothing to read up on. Drat.

I have switched sets very frequently (every couple of months or so) over the last year and concluded that overall nothing has made a distinctive distance--new, old, doesn't matter. EXCEPT the wedges. I do better with light-shafted newer wedges.

So this year, the Eye 2s go into the bag. I have a set of the original black laminate maple woods, as well, that I might throw in too. Play a Chrome Soft or Project (a) and I think that should do it. Except for some '80s pants and music.

This weekend I took my beloved Cobra blades with stiff shafts out of the bag for ping eye 2 with r300's. I don't golf nearly as much as I used to, so why make the game harder? Point and shoot high and straight. Timeless and ingenious!

Cant believe how hard of a time I'm having finding a green or white set of becus. Where did all of these go? All that's around anymore are black, red, and orange it seems. Arggggghhhhh!

I think Ping has revised their color chart. So today’s white and green may translate to a different color from back in that era.

I still have my old eye 2's but rarely play them. There is a guy in our group who bought a set off Ebay and he currently plays them. Hits them very well. Hard to believe a model this old has held up so well.......

I don’t, but I would as I learned with them and probably the only club 30 years old I could still play as everything else was a butter knife

3 things I like a lot is they are very easy to refinish, not most workable, but hit straight bullets. Last oddly enough I still notice some design cues from eye and zing in modern Ping irons (mostly sole toe shape). Even when looking at sole of PXG’s toward toe just looked “Ping” being their engineers are from Ping; makes sense

So I've been looking about for a 3 iron. Heard many tales of how easy to hit the eye 2 long irons are. Always loved the look of ping eye 2 irons but closest I've got to hitting them was when I first started playing about 6 years ago in my mix match handed down irons was a ping eye wedge. Anyway whilst trawling through eBay I stumbled upon a set of ping eye 2+ orange dot 3-sw with matching serial numbers. Managed to snag the set for £31. Really looking forward to trying them out. Like I said I've always loved the look of them and especially the becu but it would seem all of you on this thread are hoarding all the becu models in cupboards all around the world making it difficult and expensive for the rest of us to get hold of a set ?. Really looking forward to the weekend now to get them on the course and see if they can manage to kick my mizzy MP 57s out the bag (we haven't been getting along very well for a few weeks, got to the stage were we don't really look or talk to each other now). I'm being tortured though, they have been delivered to the neighbours while I was at work. I can see them but the inconsiderate so and so's have decided to go out.

Ok. Finally the neighbours came back and I now have my irons. They have k t shafts in them. Seen a few stories of heads flying off in this thread. How much of a problem are they. They look in relatively good condition, few tiny tiny rust spots but overall ok. Only one the gives me slight concern at the moment is the 9 iron as it almost looks like there is no epoxy. It looks different to the other irons. I took the 7 iron and a couple of golf balls with me on the dog walk and hit a few shots. Very impressed I have to say but just a bit concerned about this 9 iron. Also have to say ( don't hate me for this) that I'm really not that fond of the look of the w and SW. Just seems like an insane amount of offset on those 2 clubs. I'll give them a try but on first impressions my current wedges might be safe.

I have been playing a set of Eye2s with KT-M shafts since 1992. I've had one head come off. I would say not much of a problem at all. If the 9i is concerning you hopefully you have access to a club builder -- I had Ping do mine but I would imagine that shipping costs would be a bit much from the UK.

Ok this is going to sound a little crazy but as I posted earlier I have just got my first ever set of ping eye 2 irons. I've been wanting some since I first started playing 6 years ago.

Here's the connundrem. I'm ok with the KT (not KTM) shafts in them but on further inspection a couple give me a bit of concern as well as the 9 iron I explained in an earlier post. The 4 iron seems to have more rust spots near the hosel than the rest and on the 6 iron I have spotted (what admittedly is very small) a dent in the shaft just below the shaft sticker. I have a set of project X non flighted 5.0 shafts in a spare set of irons. These are my perfect shaft and if I'm honest I'm really intrigued to see what the eye 2+ irons would play like with the project X shafts in them.

Now the next problem. As the 5.0s have been in a set of irons with ferrules I know from past reshafting work with these irons that the prep to the tip of the shafts comes past were the hosel comes to. Obviously im not keen on reshafting the pings with exposed steel right next to the hosel as I can see all kinds of horrer stories of rust, strength compromises = head comes flying off.

Are there any handy tips for covering these sections of the shafts or dare I say it is it possible to fit ferrules on ping eye 2 irons? I'm talking the smallest ferrules I can get to cover the exposed steel. I know it's probably sacrilege but I'd rather look down on them with a ferrule fitted than waiting for the day I have to start the search for the head that's just snapped off.

Appreciate any advice on this as I'm really keen to get these in the bag as my gaming irons, I'm quickly falling for them but a bit concerned about some of the original shafts.

Ping UK (Gainsborough) are really good for support, give them a call. If you can survive without them for a week, I'm sure they'd give them a thorough once over and any repair for free / negligible if its only the epoxy cost.

If you're really loving the irons, they also do the guyson blast re-finish for £12 a club. My Eye 2+ are currently with them for a refresh, very eagerly awaiting their return.

I have seen a set of Eye 2's that someone put ferrules on and they didn't look that bad, you could compare pics of the S59 Ping irons as they came in a ferrule and non ferule model as a comparison before proceeding.

I have played Pings since the early 80's. I kept going back to the Eye 2's. I turned 73 and had to admit the zz lite was jut to much to handle..I found a set on PAT PEND 1984 Eye 2's 1-sw. They have the ez red label in them, They were made for 1 year mostly for the asian market. The set was in exc condition. Took them out to the range. The shafts are great . They play like a soft reg flex and I am hitting them with the same distance I hit the zz shafts 20 years ago.. At my age and health problems I think I found the answer of how I can still play the eye 2's/ So for us older guys who find the shafts in the eye 2 wih ZZ, KT, KTM the EZ could ne the answer.
