Took out a few 50's classics yesterday for a quick 9.  Probably one of the few remaining rounds before the clubs come in for winter. Admittedly, the irons were modern but I justified it by telling myself Nike doesn't make golf gear anymore, so nostalgic=vintage. Driver: 1952 MacGregor 653 T, 2-Wood: 1953 MacGregor M85TW E•O•M, 4-Wood: 1953 MacGregor 945W, Irons: 2013 Nike VR Pro Combo (4,6,8,PW), Wedge: 1986 Ben Hogan BeCu SI 56°, Putter: 1993 Scotty Cameron Classic I (pre-Titleist). The driver is a great block of wood with a nice carbon spot on the toe and no lead in the skirt...but the 2-wood hits a great high draw off the tee as well.

Played in a P&B competition at Flempton GC, Suffolk, England yesterday.

 

Very enjoyable day and a decent turn out of about 28 golfers.

 

I pushed it back to a set of 1930s coated shaft clubs, which I'm partly laying the blame on for my dismal score of 98!

 

• Laurie Auchterlonie Driver, Brassie and Spoon, very whippy shaft on the driver.
• Ben Sayers "Parex" 1 to 8 irons (no sand iron in this set!), these are some of the least forgiving clubs I've hit, unless you're on the circle in the middle of the face the distance drop off is huge. I was rarely on the circle.
• Donaldson "Pinfinder" putter, it and I didn't gel on the day!

Great fun though and can't wait for next year. 😀

Took the day off work to walk 18, 48 degree weather with a 15MPH wind so not the best conditions but trying to sneak in as many rounds as possible before the snow flies.  Same setup I used a few weeks ago with the spalding top flite legacy irons, Cleveland wedge, original Ping Zing, and the Ginty, but this time is swapped in the Pedersen 51 and a Mac Nicklaus 3 wood in place of the Powerbilts.  First 7 holes were pretty shaky but once I got dialed in on the short game it was a great round. The Pedersen was a joy to hit all day, so the  Ginty didn’t make a single appearance. Hit a couple absolute bullets with the 3 wood, don’t know anything about it other than it looks like an 80’s Club and it really agrees with my swing.  Also tried some Wilson Duo balls for the first time, and I think I prefer them to the Callaway super soft.

54 degrees and raining in the Chicagoland area.  I had the day off and decided to play at my local par 3 as to its free and if the rain picked up no harm in just walking off the course.

 

I had the entire course to myself and got a lot of practice shots in.  Last week I took a set of Dynapowered Staffs out and had a surprisingly great round.  Well it happened again today.  This a coming of an entire season of being MacGregor loyalist with a few rounds thrown in with Arnold Palmer Trumatics.   I will say this Wilson got the blade right in 1960.  
 

I hope to get a few more rounds in this fall and see if this Wilson streak is just a fluke.

Wilson had their problems in the 80s, but there's a reason so many majors were won with Wilson Staff irons.  🙂

I got out for nine this evening with my daughter for a "nighter". We started at 5pm, and by the second or third hole it was dark, with the course illuminated by floodlights. I've never played a proper nighter before (the only "nighter" I've done before was in summer, and it was still light when we finished), so it was quite an interesting experience. Some places on the course don't get well lit, so you can find yourself hitting in near darkness.

 

Putting took the most getting used to. The greens were fluffy, having grown all day, and were wet with evening dew, so the speed was hard to get right. On top of that, shadows and the lack of light made them hard to read. 

 

Good fun, though, and I'd do it again. The daughter enjoyed herself, too.

 

Real mixed bag. Honma 2w (2w based on recent suggestions here), Mizuno 3w, Powerbilt 5w (one of my favourite clubs), TaylorMade TD 3i which I took along as a "classic" driving iron experiment but didn't get to use, Hogan '72 Apexes 4i-PW, Ram BeCu 53* SW and a Wilson Tom Kite 60*, topped off with a Mac Muirfield putter. All I lacked was a rainbow flag with "Celebrate the Diversity" decal on the bag🤣

 

I don't play the 60* wedge often, but it performed really well today. On the first, after basically cold-topping the 2w about 150 yards, I smashed a nice 5w to about 20 yards short of the green and 40 yards from the flag. Hit the 60* over a bunker to about 3~4ft and made par. That felt good (see pic below).

I didn't hit the woods off the tee that well, but on the last I nutted a 2w, which was satisfying. I hit it a bit too well, and ended up in a fairway bunker left (it's a dog leg left, so I sort of hit through the dogleg) that I didn't think I could reach.

Was wanting to play this setup for a while, I called it the “almost forsaken” bag.  I didn’t expect to ever game any of these clubs, they were either acquired as part of a large group that I was buying for some other clubs, something I bought to harvest the shafts, or a club that was given unexpectedly.  I was planning on selling all of these, but In each case I tried a few practice balls into a net or at the range at decided it was worth trying for at least one round.   

  

Driver is a Mizuno Turbo graphite head. Did not get along at all with this club so it’s probably on its way out of the collection. 3 wood is the Stan Thompson Tailored that was an unexpected restoration, and it played really well.  AC108 irons were fine, but they helped remind me why I don’t enjoy playing cast clubs, I just really prefer the feel of forged blades.  They are the only cast set I own and they are probably on their way to eBay.  Threw in a Wilson harmonized sand wedge that was sitting in the back of the closet, don’t remember where it came from but it hit a couple nice flop shots.  The putter is a Zebra TW 41 Memorial that was given to me unsolicited, and it was a pleasant surprise.  I don’t really like Zebra’s or any mallets, but this one had a great feel on short puts  and I was dead straight all day.   That one will definitely stay.

May be in need of a new bag since my ball pocket zipper broke, heard the Mackenzie bags are pretty nice...

Great looking set. I'm like you, I need to use my blades and persimmon more frequently during the season.

 

The MacKenzie bags are rock solid - I bought mine as a retirement gift to me in 2008. Still use it most rounds and love it - tab bit pricey but it will last forever.

Put some new (to me) wedges in the bag, a well struck persimmon is great no matter how cold it is!

I got out this evening for 9 holes with a friend for what is likely to be my last round of the year. I put my Mizuno Pro MP5s (old MP5s, not the new ones) in the bag along with an MS-7 SW, Mizuno Craft driver, Mizuno 3w, and my Powerbilt 5w, which has become a firm favourite this year. I also chucked in my Ping EYE2 BeCu L-wedge and TaylorMade TPA XVIII putter.

 

I have a funny relationship with the L wedge. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it. Today was one of the latter days. 

 

The tee game was OK. Hit a couple of good ones with the driver that felt good and solid, and got some decent distance as well. The MP5 irons were fantastic. I've had them extended, and although they came in at a D5 swing weight, they are well balanced and great to hit. 

 

The putter was the problem. 19 putts. Being an evening/night round, the greens get hard to read in the shadows, and the evening dew makes them play a lot slower. Meh. Should have taken my Bullseye today.

 

The next picture is of the 7th from the tee. It's a short but tight par 4, 320 yards long. The arrow points to a tree on the left side of the fairway that I sort of use as an aim point. I try to stay just right of this tree. Today, I hit the Powerbilt 5w at it, and hit it on the first bounce. It bounced sideways right, and left me 105 to the pin, which was the MS-7 SW for me. Decent second, but left a tough birdie putt.

Played my first ever vintage round today. 9 holes in Austin, TX with a Wilson 4300 1w, 4/6/8/PW 1960 Wilson Dyna-powered, and a modern putter.  
Hit 7/7 fairways and Shot 40 for 9 holes. had more fun on the course than I have in a long time. 

 

I went out and bought 2 more wooden drivers….

Decided to take a stern test today at 6,600 yards while it’s 45°F here. Really struggled on the front, especially with the short game... However, I hit a great drive and 3 wood off the soggy turf on the 580y 9th to get me back in the game! Playing persimmon woods and blades the last month has been challenging and has rejuvenated my enjoyment the game, which was waning at times this year. I think I’ll look into refinishing the woods to protect them so I can play them more next year, because I've found no satisfaction like a well struck persimmon!

 

Also, shooting 10 strokes better on the back vs the front, and beating my friend who was playing all modern equipment is always fun!

My dad has the mizuno woods, 1,3,5 woods...still wonderful clubs. Just reminds me of my dad, he used them for best on 30 years

He's got the Craft Model woods? I've never seen the fairway woods in the wild. If it's the Craft Model woods he has, he has a really nice set.

 

I'm not sure which model my 3w is because it's been refinished at some point, and the stampings aren't visible, but it hits really well. I hit some of my best drives with a persimmon Mizuno driver when I was Junior in the late Eighties. Still have a soft spot for their woods, even though it was the TP irons that we all drooled over back then.

Not too sure, I'll have a look. The 5 wood was his favourite, and I used the 3 wood for a while in the early 90s. I had tp9s for best on a decade, worn them out by 2000. I'm using my dad's friends ping Karsten 1s at the moment. He died 3 years ago and his wife just started to empty the garage....came across his old pings, so she gave them me. They are great, 40 years old and still look newish.

Played nine holes with my daughter tonight, the first round in 6 weeks for me. I've had some surgery to remove a lump on my arm (benign) that has been affecting my swing for the last 2 or 3 years. Thanks to the surgery, I was hitting the ball further and straighter than I have in months.

 

I took a Mac Toney Penna 5w and 3w which as both really solid, and slipped in a Mizuno Original Driver which I've never hit before. That was one of the great surprises of the round, as it was a joy to hit. Not as dense feeling as the Mac fairway woods, but just really easy to hit and control. 

 

Irons were Mac Muirfield 20ths, which are some of my favourites, matched with a reissue VIP 2i and some VIP wedge from, I think, the Nineties. The wedge was the other surprise: when I bought it, I played it as it was at 54*. It was a good gap wedge, but not a SW. I bent it recently to 56*, and now it's just a fantastic all-round wedge. My one birdie of the round came on a par 5 after a big drive left about 220 to a front pin. A slightly off-centre 2i ended up in the front bunker, from where I splashed out to 6ft and made the birdie.

 

The irons were great, got good looks at birdies on both par threes (one with an 8i, one with a 7i), and one of the shots of the round was a 5i into the hardest par 4 that looked good all the way until it bounced hard and went through the back.

6 fairways hit, 6 GiR, 18 putts, and a round of 39. I'll take that!

 

My daughter also played pretty well. Her putting lets her down the most, but she's starting to get more consistency with her driver, and she seems to have a great touch in the sand--she hit an even better splash than me from the same bunker that I splashed out of and made birdie. She hit hers to 3-foot, but missed the putt. 

 

Finished with the spotlights on in thee dark, and stopped off for a bowl of noodles for dinner with her on the way home.

For a variety of reasons my golf has also had to take a back seat and so has been severely curtailed with only 15 holes played since early October. 

However, I grabbed the chance to get out yesterday in rather cold but pleasant conditions.

Went with my usual winter short set arrangement, this time comprising TM Tour Spoon and a delightful return to Ram Tour Grinds (4,6,8,Pw & Sw) and faithful Zebra putter.

Yes Stu, Ram irons in a Mac bag, sorry! 😁
