Phil's wedges for Open

dcfas

Recommended Posts

I just read that Phil will be bagging his Cally 56, 60, and 64 degree wedges for the Open; specifically, the Callaway MD3 Milled 56°, Callaway Mack Daddy PM-Grind 60° and 64°. I was wondering if his PW is 46* or thereabouts how does he make that 10 degrees of gap work? What, does he deloft the 56* that much?

Anyone else have a 10 degree gap between PW and next wedge up?

At the risk of sounding like a total newb, what is the benefit of bending when you can get the club as it was designed to be?

Bending a wedge strong reduces the bounce and increases the offset.

They make wedges at practically every degree and bounce combination. But Phil is just a very finicky wedge guy. They could make every combination imaginable and Phil, and most WRXers, would still be unsatisfied. Don't be that guy.

well.. the one i actually saw stamped 53 was a PM grind 56.. they dont make any PM grinds stronger than 56..so it was necesity i guess... also as stated it reduces bounce.... whether his MD forged 56 is all the way to 53 i dont know.. but i bet its strong at least a degree or two... and its to cover a certain yardage.... im sure he has a choked down PW yardage and then a full 53-56 ( whatever it is ) yardage.... and i bet that gap is only a few yards... it basically affords him the ability to carry that 64 super lob..

Obviously Phil kicked bones to the curb because he carried his clubs in a perceived way that altered the loft on his 56 to 53.5 and then blamed him when he was a 1/2 a yard short on his wedge shot. This is why he hired his awful brother to caddie for him even though he rides in golf carts shirtless and left Bones destitute living like that Pipedream guy from the Golf Channel reality show. If Phil wasn't such a corrupt felon then he could afford to have his wedges adjusted and keep Bones on the bag.

Correct. Also makes it 100 times easier to hit shots fat. Phils edges are razor sharp very unique. he grinds 1-2mm off the edges. Ridiculous and requires his level cockiness and confidence. Allows you to get a ton of spin if you clip the ball right

I've tried to pull off those types of shots before and it is a crap shoot at best without these types of modifications, and even then it becomes a crap shoot in the other direction.

From a technical standpoint the goal seems to be to maintain clubhead acceleration through and underneath the ball without the bounce redirecting the clubhead's energy up. This allows for as much of the clubhead's speed to be converted into backspin instead of carry distance. Standard wedges with standard grinds and normal bounce angles (8-14*) will have a tendency to want to bounce up into the ball instead of continuing under it causing your attempted cheeky 20 yard flop shot to sail over the green. Obviously this tendency gets worse as the bounce increases.

The answer then is a lob wedge with a sharp leading edge and low bounce for these types of "Phil flops". The trade off is that it becomes incredibly easy to completely lay the turf over the ball since the club isn't helping you at all. I've pulled off one of those "Scottish Open 2013" flop shots ONCE and it was on a practice green. It has to be one of the highest risk/reward shots you can play I think. With how hard you have to swing + a tight lie like that your immediate failures will either be a 120 yard skull shot or a 2 yard chili dip. And then even if you DO manage to make decent contact you're way more likely to catch a bit of a bounce in the turf that sends your ball 10+ yards beyond your target unless you have exactly the right type of wedge for the shot, in which case your chances of the aforementioned chili dip increase dramatically.

So in summary, f*ck you Phil, you make it look like something we can run out and do on the weekend and we REALLY can't.

Bounce is your friend on those shots and they really aren't that hard. Tight lies are infinitely easier than soft and wet lies.

not really... if you watch Phils lessons on the flop with the 64 he shows you that you are hitting it "fat" on purpose.. all weight on lead leg... 100% weight forward and drive the clubhead down under the ball... and the ball will pop straight up.... of course not on a soggy lie.. think spinner type bunker shot.. you just have to have weighht forward to keep the leadinge edge down and speed to get the clubhead under and through the ball...

now yes.. if you chicken out and quit on it or try to help it up you will blade it into the parking lot or through the clubhouse grille... people die and you go to jail.... so be careful..

Every time I see Phil pull off a 10 yard, short-sided flop shot where he swings as hard as he can and hits the ball 100 feet in the air and 5 feet forward, I wonder whether I could pull that shot off.

Then the image flashes through my head of me blading that shot right into the green side gallery. Onlookers scramble, some poor bloke catches it right in the mouth and crumbles in a heap, paramedics are called, etc. I end up making bogey. Just awful.
