Chasing 82

I saw the symbol down at the bottom of the CBS leaderboard. It looks like the PGA Tour is taking the MLB route to Tiger passing Sam Snead on the all time PGA Tour win list.

The good part is that the PGA Tour Youtube channel has added 14 videos of some of Tiger's early triumphs. They are about 45-50 minutes long with footage from events such as the 2000 AT&T Pro-Am and win #1 at Las Vegas in 1996.

Hopefully, more will be added soon.

I also enjoyed this written recap of all 81 wins so far. Includes some fun quotes from the vanquished, such as

_"I played better golf than Tiger today. And he won"_ (Vijay)

_"I almost fell off the couch"_ (Azinger)

_"He could knock you out with a light punch. And when he needs to, he can step it up and knock you clean out of the ring"_ (Appleby)

That is a superb quote from Appleby!

I had no idea Taylor Smith tied Woods in the 1996 Disney event and was disqualified for a nonconforming putter grip! That's brutal. Still, I didn't even know you were allowed to have 2 grips on a club and apparently Smith had 2 and one had a flat side which is not allowed. He had been notified in the middle of the round and disqualified after they finalized the ruling.

Just read another cool factoid. in 2003 Tiger became the first player in history to win at least 4 times for 5 straight seasons (with 8, 9, 5, 5, 5 wins from '99-02). In 2009 he did it for a second time! (6, 8, 7, 4, 6 wins from '05-'09)

Jack accomplished the feat twice as well if we lower it down to 3 or more wins.

Yes, but Tiger says he's trying to pass Snead at 82. So we're all going to play nice and think of that as the real number.

  • 1 year later...

I wanted to give this thread a bump.

You can watch 45-50 minute excerpts of the original coverage of nearly all of Tiger's 82 wins. Majors are not included as that content is not owned by the PGA Tour.

Last weekend I watched Tiger's first professional win in Las Vegas in 1996 and his second win that year at the Disney. It's very cool to see portions of the original broadcasts of a very young Tiger. Neat fact: Tiger won $200,000 for his first victory in Las Vegas. That seems like chump change today. It's also cool to walk down memory lane with Tiger's equipment.

To watch just go to YouTube and visit the PGA Tour page and then search the videos for "Chasing 82." If you want to target a year just include that in the search terms.

This is so much better than watching HBO's trash documentary.

jack burst on the scene in 1960, Tiger in 1997

According to this timeline, the next jack/Tiger will make himself known around 2034...he is currently 7 years old or so

fingers crossed we get to see another generational behemoth!

What I always get a kick out of is hearing the announcers saying things like "This young man looks to have a very promising career ahead of him" and the like; having the luxury of knowing what a career it became.

I'm old enough to have been watching these as they happened and remember just how mind-blowing it was to watch him play. Not to poop on the stars of the mid 90s (obviously I was a fan) but none of those guys stood a chance, really.

"He plays a game with which I am not familiar"

Say it again, Bobby.

I love SS but some of his wins are questionable. For example,

Setting up an impromptu “golf course” at the PGA Commissioners annual drunken BBQ consisting of water buckets, houseplants, and Dixie cups, in the backyard and declaring Sam the winner of a “PGA Tour event”.

I mean, that’s a bit of a stretch.

it was a thing of beauty...

nothing will ever be so astounding [to me] as his ball striking during The Open at Hoylake in 2006...

he hit all 8 shots from ever iron in the bag with the occasional 3w and 1 driver early during round 1...

It was, imho, the greatest ball striking planet earth has ever seen...and he did it off perhaps the most burned out, hardened surface any major has ever seen...

Pluto TV has a channel called 'PGA Tour Rewind' with Tiger's victories as well. It very well be the same footage.
