I have to admit I have a soft spot for MacGregor M43s so I couldn’t pass these up. 😁

I was just looking at those M43s and was thinking they are a great example of a great club. I never thought about M43/33s in my youth, but now they are as good as 693s to me. A very kind man passed on an M33 driver to me recently, a really lovely club, and I was able to find an unmodified 693 also; side my side, they look like the same club. Your example of that club is really as good as it gets.

I've been meaning to post these for a week or two: Mizuno MP5s. What? MP5s can't be considered classic because they came out in 2015? Not these ones....

I think they were a North American release, because the TP (Tour Pro, later Tour Proven)  branding was being used in Europe when I think these came out, and Japan was still using the MS (Mizuno Staff) stamping.

Also, the shafts are S300, and the PW is 35.5", which is the same as my MS-7s, which I know were a US release. 35" seems to be more common for the PW lengths on releases for the Japanese market. I'm just not sure why these are "MP" whereas my MS-7s are "MS".

Anyway, they appear to be as good as identical to the MS-701s and TP-5s, and the 701s were a 1986 release (one year only, as well, from the looks of it), so I'm dating these to around then as well.

2029770165_MizunoMP5backs2.jpg.f18cc422498a0c044cd23b465741cc18.jpg155573814_MizunoMP5backscloseup.jpg.b0a8141294764a7d3b5bd62cd6bf2c91.jpg541087356_MizunoMP5PWface.jpg.dbc89b03012c37c77ee541d781d075b0.jpg1429508396_MizunoMP57iaddress.jpg.e8125588f89aedc4f5e457cbd97e56fc.jpg1908325492_MizunoMP57iface.jpg.b34af46f83b11dc5491e61003c6f0925.jpg1241771551_MizunoMP57iback.jpg.7c83ba2b94a08f05da5b2287adfd41e7.jpg

Strangely, although the PW is 35.5", the 9i is 35.7" and the 8i 36". I'm thinking of getting the 9i extended to 36", and going in 0.5" increments from there, or maybe just 3/8" between the 5, 4, and 3.

Keepers for sure.

I found a set of those a couple of years ago, but they are MS-5's with a Dynaflex shaft instead of S300.  This article on Golfwrx dates them to the late 80's.   Here's a catalog page about them.

Now what's interesting there is that they are stamped MS-5, not MP-5 like mine. I've also seen a version of that MS-4 stamped MP4 as well.

I don't know which Mizuno used first in the US market, MS or MP.

Anyway, that catalogue page you provided shows the specs, so it's extremely helpful. Thanks!👍

FWIW, Maltby Club ID guide lists the MS-3 as being introduced in 1984, and the MS-4 and MS-5 in 1985.

Happened to have the book handy when I read Joe's post.  🙂

1985 fits well with my relief that they are the same as the MS-701s, which were a Japanese release and came out in 1986, or thereabouts.👍

I got my First Flight 2 wood yesterday. Either the hosel is slightly bent or it's extremely closed. Sadly, I'm going with the former. I have a First Flight 5 wood on the way, but it's delayed.

Thanks. That confirms the MS-701 being the same as the US/Europe MS-5 (later TP-5 in Europe). So the fact mine are stamped MP-4 means they are a US release (as I suspected) and 1990 or later (which I did't know). Interesting that they kept this iron available for at least 5 years after release.

Incidentally, the shaft lengths of mine are slightly different from the posted specs. Sloppy QC, special order, or post-sale adjustment? Hmmm.....

Stopped at goodwill today and made an unexpected find.  Had no idea what brand they were but for $1 I figured I can’t go wrong. These were NIP and I couldn’t see anything other then the Penn Ventilator,  so I had to open them to see exactly what they were.  From some quick internet sleuthing it looks like these were made by Plymouth Golf Ball company, who was founded in 1916 and acquired by Shakespeare in 1968.  I know it’s a long shot but anyone  have any experience with Plymouth Golf balls?

I don't know that this acquisition is really in the Classic Folders sense, but I'm sharing it anyway...

Bought a Mizuno MP-20 HMB 2 iron the other day.  I have a habit of surfing the 2nd Swing website, just seeing what's out there.  Based on my play with the MP37s this year, been having the thought of picking up an HMB 3 iron for the top end of the bag, for a bit of trajectory assistance.  Happened to see the HMB 2 iron there, complete with Steelfiber i95 shaft.

Took it as a Sign from the golf gods.

Standard loft is 16* on this stick, planning on using it today as a 1 iron on top of my Golden Rams.  Previous owner looks to have been a tall sort, the club is +1.25" and upright, with a midsize grip with extra tape under it.  I've cut it down to 40" (1 iron length in my world) and gripped it just now.

And, in the fine @BIG STU tradition, I have lead taped the heck out of it, to get it to D6.  I'll have to grab phone for a pic....

I've got the Japanese 4i version of that in my modern bag, with a nice graphite shaft installed in it. Not the easiest driving iron around, but it blends well with my irons and feels good when struck properly.
