Average Joes, what's your driver & shaft combination?

Recommended Posts

88-92 short fast, found the perfect shaft fujikura six xlr8 in regular, stiffer than all of the regulars I've tried, stiff tip, accurate. Tried jpx 900, m1, m2, gbb, xr 16 png g, ping g30, ping g sf tec, epic, epic sub zero and Mizuno 2016 ez.

The winner is Mizuno ez, has a higher center of gravity but back, head weight is 202 and the one weight really changes path. Playing weight in draw, aim right side of fairway, ends up on the left side, like automatic, hard feeling is the only downside compared to most, also the graphics are busy, going to get it painted over the winter.

Playing it at 10.5 settin, actual is 11.2, total club weight is 322 at 45". Using callaway super soft when temp is below 70, callaway super hot 70 over 70 and occasionally chrome soft.

And they are on eBay less than $150.

All of the low spin drivers are just too low spin for my swing speed.

I did my own fitting on course. Occasional launch monitor but they are just a tool to narrow down choices.

I finally accepted the fact that I am getting older (north of 60) and went to regular shafts on my last set of clubs. SS with the driver is 100 if I come out of my shoes...but I don't...so it is normally in the 95 mph range and I have what is termed as a smooth transition at the top. Went with a TM M2 and a AD DI 6 shaft.

Slow Rain, what flex is your DI 6?

I game a Titleist 905T 8.5 degree with a UST Mamiya AxivCore Tour Green 65g stiff shaft. It is at 44" in length. My back up is a Titleist 905S 9.5 degree with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI 6 stiff shaft. I made an error with this one as I installed this as a full bore shaft. The bore of the 905s are just over 3 inches (close to 3.5 inches). This shaft is very stiff and borderline too stiff for me. I might still put this driver in the bag if I can gain some flexibility in my shoulder turn (and lose a bit of weight doing so) and generate another 5 mph swing speed. I have another Titleist 905S 9.5 degree head that I will install a Fujikura Pro 73 Tour Spec stiff shaft. This shaft I will install with a blind bore, approximately 1.5" blind bore. This will leave about 2 inches of shaft insertion for the Fujikura. While the 905 series drivers might be a bit shorter than current day drivers, they are smaller head and offer me more ability to work the ball. I just have a hard time doing this with the current day drivers.

Driver:  TaylorMade 300 Mini 11.5° (10.2°), Fujikura Ventus Blue 5S Velocore

LW:  Scratch Golf 1018 forged 58° DS, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff

My gamer is a Titleist 917d3 with a Diamana Ltd Blue 70-s. After a little experimentation to get it set right, I really am pleased with. Now this week I’ve travelled to California for Thanksgiving, and brought my backup driver: TM RBZ Tour w/ Fuji 757-S. After about 4-5 wild drives to get re-acquainted, I started hitting it great. I’m not sure if my two drivers are very similar or not, but I can hit either one with about the same trajectory, control and length. I guess good swings yield good results, and the club brand or model is less important if it’s close to an appropriate fit for you.

Titleist 915 D2, UST Proforce V2, stiff. Was using a Diamana Blue regular flex. I could not keep the ball from ballooning. The ball flight I get with the V2 cuts through the wind much better, and rolls out a lot further.

9.0* (Set to Neutral) Cleveland Classic Custom XL with a stock R-flex Miyazaki Tour Issue shaft. This club has been money for me for well over a year and doesn't seem to be in danger of being knocked out of my bag.

Backup Drivers (that ALL perform well for me) include:

9.5* Ping K15 with stock R-flex TFC 149 shaft. The shaft on this club is actually pretty decent (IMHO). I picked the club up new at DSG for about $70 a few months ago. It's not longer than my Cleveland Classic XL but it's probably the straightest driver I've ever played.

8* TaylorMade R11 (the original) with an authentic R-flex Diamana Blue Board shaft (tipped 1/2"). This club absolutely performs! It's just slightly less forgiving than my Classic XL.

12* Cleveland SL290 with a "made for" R-flex Diamana White Board shaft. Again, this club isn't the longest club I've played but it is EXTREMELY forgiving and straight.

^^^My post about 3 years ago...^^^

Right now I’m playing a 9* Ping G30 (set to 10*) with a Project X Black 6.0.

I love golf

Currently a 915 D2 head with a couple of Diamana Whiteboard flowerbands that I've had for years. One is shortened for tight courses, the other is for bomb-and-gouge courses.

Even though my SS drops a bit every year, these shafts still work pretty well. :)

SS 94-97 Titleist 910 D3 10.5 w Diamana Kai'li 60 S(the real deal not the stock option). I was on Trackman this week and tried most of the latest drivers and a bunch of shafts, my setup couldn't be improved by the fitter. Beforehand he put it on some machine and it gave him a number, I believe it was 259 or around that, he said that's way too stiff and he'd be able to find me a much better fit, as it wouldn't suit my smooth tempo, he couldn't have been more wrong.

I found switching out to this shaft about 4 years ago gave me a similar initial launch than the stock red shaft forget the name, but a more penetrating flight and about an extra 5-10m.

Yea, be careful with fitters and their recommendations. They're like car salesmen, in that some are better than others. ;)

I've been playing a titleist 905t for around 8 years. Aldilla nv stiff. 9.5 degree.

Recently got a srixon z545. Kuro kage black stiff. 8.5 degree. haven't tweaked the settings on it yet. Took it to the range once with it set in neutral and couldn't put together two consistent shots. I'm sure I will get used to it. But I haven't hit a 460cc in a long time lol.

Interesting. I've never heard of doing that. Sounds like something I would like to try.

I do all manner of strange things. I was an engineer for most of my career, and I just like to tinker with anything/everything.

The one for tight courses is 44". The one for bomb-and-gouge type courses is 45.5". What can I say, it works for me. :)

love that shaft

I do as well. Just picked up a 6s though. Gonna see how that plays. Gonna try out all stiff shafts. Hopefully that'll help with my back issues.

there is a black stiff version of the Di-6, it also being lower torque than the orange.
