One possible change to the rule would be to change the wording to "nearest point of relief in grass the same height of cut as the original position." If no point of relief is available meeting that criterion as well as not being closer to the hole, the true nearest point of relief would be used. I'd like that rule changed, but we can't blame DJ for it.

So you want them measuring grass before the player takes a drop?

Not exactly the same height, but the same cut. If you are in fairway you drop in the fairway, if you're in the 1st cut you drop in the 1st cut. If you're in the rough you drop in the rough.

Terrible rule but not DJ's fault.

Maybe they should have them play as it lies and if he hits the tower then it is a replay?

wow.. youd rather add in a "mulligan" than give relief ? the hate is really blinding here

You do know there is already precedent for a rule like this? Decision 33-8/13 allows for the implementation of a local rule REQUIRING a player whose ball strikes overhead power lines to replay his shot.

What a bunch of d*ckheads the USGA are...."we're going to look at it after the round"

Yeah just go ahead and think about that for the next 8 holes DJ, never mind that a rules official already decided not to penalize you

I am of the opinion that the ruling was correct, but the rule itself is flawed and Johnson's decision to hit that shot shows a lack of integrity.

does one get a choice ? ( real question) i thought it was mandatory relief..as in if it made your lie worse you had to take that too

I believe that you are given a choice of determining when it is a TIO. You aren't going to be able to prove in a court of law what his intent was, but I think its fairly clear from his alignment and the result that he was aimed to hit the ball right over the tower, so it wasn't really a line of sight obstruction even though he claimed it was.

Not illegal, but uncouth (IMO).

And now they're going to wait until after the round to rule on it? That is beyond retarded, way to try to mess with his head. Seems more like deliberate sabotage...

no way should he be penalized for that putt. He didn't take any action towards the ball when/if it moved. A rules official has already ruled on it... now they want to go back and look at it again.... Even better, they will leave the decision for after the round. Such crap by the USGA.

Man if they penalize Johnson after already have a rules guy bless it....WTF is wrong with the USGA? I watched the video too, how did he cause that ball to move?

What a ridiculous thing that could cost a guy a major.

If the ball moves that easy, usga need to look at themselves and say - are the greens too slick?

He CLEARLY didn't ground his putter behind the ball, and had a rules official consult. And these jokers come out and tell him they are going to maybe assess him after the round

Honestly can't believe it

And yeah, this is always going to be an issue if there's any wind, and the greens are rolling US open style

they wont if that stroke matters in the end..it would be too much bad press for them.. the real question is who at the USGA has it in for him ? why would you plant that stroke seed of doubt if you didnt intend to sabotage his mindset... shame on you USGA...damn idiots

Sergio and Piercy seem to really like playing together today. One of those "Whatever you can do I can do better" situations.

just the opposite for Landry and Lowry...

Already feeling gutted for DJ.

No way, no way at all did he ground the putter. As soon as they called the referee in Westwood said to ref that he didn't ground it.

You are joking, right? He followed the rules. He followed the instructions of the official. How much more honest can he get?

If he hit it over the item that he needed line of sight relief from he didn't need relief from it.
