So if Webb goes on to capture the Players tomorrow, is he still in the discussion?

If people said Webb they were way off their rocker.

He's got 4 wins on tour and has lost like 4 others in playoffs. He even went top 40 in 7 of the last 10 majors.

I do think he's got one of the ugliest swings on tour, but his resume stands up very well in my opinion.

swing does look like he could shank anything...driver to wedge... ..but... he is handsy good ball striker...what i don't like is the putter being anchored on the forearm... legal...yes..but anchoring is anchoring..dumb rules... either have it across the board..or don't have it at all

My first thoughts were Hamilton, Willet, Ben Curtis. But the answer is probably Micheel.

Looks that way because he DOES (shank anything) - just search "Webb Simpson shank" on YT/webz and there's plenty of carnage to choose from. Unfortunately he's got a bit of a reputation for these.

The problem is that when his action is ON, it's pretty damn good... so what do you do, overhaul everything in the name of consistency, or keep it as is and live through the peaks and valleys?

Yesterday would've been much more telling if he hadn't opened up such a wide cushion (kudos to his play through the first three rounds) as pressure magnifies these chinks. Most notable example IMO would be the hosel rocket on #8 from his 2012 RC singles match against Poulter... absolutely brutal.

But he is quite consistent. The odd shank is not a killer.

for the season Simpson is

Putting 5th in strokes gained

Tee to green 33rd

Off the tee 96th-positive strokes gained is good for how relatively short he is.

Approach the green 25th (actually dropped this week)

Around the green 24th

Give any player those numbers and they are going to play well.

For the current season? It's mid-May. And let's not act like the season really started last October.

I'm talking consistency from a long-term perspective. After Simpson's career high-water mark in 2012, he's won a silly season event late in 2013 and little else since. I would not call these results indicative of consistency... he has managed to rack up an 81% cuts made figure in that time span, so he's got that going.

FedEx Cup finishes 85-94-3-13-17-13-40-78-25-8. A couple lean(but well inside of the top 125) years to start his career and a year and a half or so to learn a new way to putt. I am not calling him a world #1 but let's not call him a journeyman either with those numbers. Folks don't like the aesthetics of his swing and overlook the results.

PS we are 29 events into the season and 20 remain.

PSS this conversation is reminding me of the typical Spieth all putt no hit threads. Spieth is #2 strokes gained tee to green and #183 putting.

No worries, I get where you are coming from and mostly agree with what I've bolded above, however please note that I never called him a journeyman. My concern was not with the aesthetics of his action but rather its propensity to produce laterals.

My point regarding the "so far this season" response was that statistics from one season (okay, slightly more than half of one season) is not enough proof to substantiate my claim that he lacks overall consistency relative to the level we know he's capable of playing (2011 & 2012).

I don't believe I've ever engaged in a debate nor taken a position regarding the key efficiencies Jordan Spieth's game.

We are pretty much in agreement I think. Even before this weeks win he was way to good to be considered in this thread.

Danny Willett....

He was OWGR 12 at the time. He has more pro wins than Micheel. He shot under par after taking the lead from Spieth. He still has plenty of time to get his game back and have a successful career.

I played plenty with ben curtis on the hooters tour.Guy was a scary streaky putter with a long fluid swing.Great tempo.I knew he was getting to the pga tour. he won 4 times on tour and almost won a second major at the 2008 pga.He was tied for the lead on the 69th or 70th hole at oakland hills. He doesnt belong on this list. Hes hung the clubs up now and is teaching.
