ANA rules issue (Merged)

It's just sad, IMHO. While it won't be pointed at specifically by those who don't know it, the people who tell me they don't want to try and play golf because "of all the stupid rules" seem a little less whiny and a little more justified every time something like this happens.

I wouldn't know the wording to rewrite the rule, or what to do about it, but there ought to be some sort of common sense clause in the rules. Did she give herself a distinct advantage? No. Great, move along, go find something else to do other than sending golf tours emails whining about a ball being moved mere inches, if that.

EDIT: And I don't care if the rule being stupid isn't the actual issue as some might tell me. Agree on not calling in things after the fact, too.

There are plenty of times a footprint, cleat dent, old ballmark (even repaired) can have an impact...that's why it needs to be this way....IMO, if everyone were watched extremely closely, you'd see a lot of mismarks

I just called the NFL office after watching the 1979 replay of Oilers vs. Steelers. Mike Renfro made the catch. Call reversed. The Oilers are going to the Super Bowl. Dan Pastorini is 68 and will be the oldest Super Bowl QB in history.

Some have tried to compare this to basketball or football, and changing the result the next day. The difference here is that the tournament had not concluded, so how could they let a known rules breach go without a penalty? I don't like it, and perhaps they should change the rules to eliminate the "signing an incorrect scorecard" penalty. Then it would have been only two strokes. But the LPGA did what the current rules prescribe.

Agreed... I did find it just a tad odd she didn't place the ball back in exact spot.... she lifted the ball for literally a half second... what I disagree with with is that the penalty is upheld The next day. And anytime this does happen there is no scenario it's two shots... will always be four shots.

But in other sports we do see replays moments later that show that no it wasn't a hold or pass interference or whatever but the call still stands and affects the outcome of the game....I think intent to cheat has to factor in somewhere(Golf being what it is) especially when in other sports cheating is almost part of the game....dives in Soccer for instance.

Don't care if a viewer catches it. Breaking the rules is breaking the rules.

Catching it the next day seems dumb. Once the day is over, it's over.

Adding two strokes for an incorrect score card seems to go beyond what I would thinks any reasonable person would consider fair, or in the spirit of competitive play, and if they hadn't done that then this wouldn't have been the issue it is.

You do have to put the ball back where you got it :(

You know what's worse than allowing people to call/email about supposed rules infractions?

That anyone would ever actually call/email.

Nope. What's worse is taking action for an insignificant infraction.

Only players, officials, and officials in the rules room should be able to call penalties and you have to call penalties before a person signs his or her scorecard for that day is my suggestion

These imbeciles on the golf channel are saying the LPGA did the only thing it could do. Really? How about when they got the call from this moron a day later, politely tell him/her to go jump in a lake. Or maybe use more colorful language.

Whole thing is really disappointing.

If no-one realized she had made a penalty until after she signed her score card, how could she sign an incorrect scorecard

Retroactively incorrect scorecard is the rule

USGA = Pure total JUNK!

Again, this is NOT a USGA event it's a TV show run by a business, the LPGA Tour.

Sui, how do you feel the USGA would have handled the same situation? In my opinion, there was no other way out...

It's an interesting question Kevin. Obviously following the rules this is the outcome. So, in lieu of fixing the idiotic (IMHO) "signing an incorrect scorecard", when it was correct at the time it was signed the LPGA official who was first to be informed of it should have just sat on it. Said nothing. Even if it comes out later that this happened, it would have created less controversy than the way it was handled.

But the simple fix is don't answer phone calls or emails while the tournament is ongoing.

There is always a circling of the wagons when stuff like this happens. It is terrible.

The only reason they complained about the DJ ruling is that he managed to win. If he hadn't, a bunch of them would have defended the USGA.

Whoever suggested that the caller, the receiver of the call and the USGA and LPGA officials who signed off on the penalty should be dragged out into their front yard and shot (with a stream of cold water from the garden hose) has obviously gone way over the top. Shame, shame.

This is a sad day for the LPGA and for golf.

Rules infractions should only be called by players, caddies, or a rules official in the group. Video should only be used to clarify or validate a potential infraction called by the above.

PERIOD.

Video should not be used, unless they can video every shot for every player.

PERIOD

While it sucks and I hate it, I just watched it in real speed, and she totally knew what she was doing.

Watch that in slow motion and you will see what could be a spike mark or imperfection when she lifts the ball and which the ball is to the side of when she puts it back down.

Only saying could be, NOT suggesting she did something intentional, but whatever it is (and maybe just something that looks odd on camera that doesn't look at all odd to the player) but my wife, who could care less than less noticed it and I agree.

It also looks so close to the marker it may be nothing that would matter if it was something.

What it looks like to me as well, pro tour equivalent of the guy you see on punched greens mark and then place it to the side of the punchmark.

Yeah, this is entirely possible. I'm not sure why everyone immediately wrote it off as unintentional, not that I agree with how the whole thing played out.

How any governing body over a sport would actually take action the next day because a fan pointed it out and the officials didn't catch it is ridiculous. No call-ins or emails should be allowed for any sporting event. I understand the event was still going on, but to penalize a player for something they didn't know they did, that gives them no advantage is just plain stupid. This should be the number one rule they change, no need to wait for another year of idiocy by ruling officials. I'd love to meet the jerk that emailed the LPGA about this. Love to hear their explanation.
