Titleist's new "AVX" golf balls, with premium urethane covers

Recommended Posts

There is no direct correlation to firmness of a ball and a player's swing speed. Chrome Soft is case in point; it's as long as any ball on the market, for a wide variety of swing speeds, and it spins plenty off the short irons. Duo U is another fine example; it feels like a marshmallow but goes like hell off the driver, even for guys with a faster swing speed.

It seems to me that Titleist is trying to tap into the Chrome Soft market by offering an alternative. Is the Chrome Soft market older guys with slower speeds? I don't think so. So why all the talk about this new Titleist ball being targeted at slow swinging seniors?

Question I have is why didn't Titleist simply denote this new ball a Pro V1 Soft? It's the same price as a Pro V1 so why the new naming convention?

Under no circumstances for a long hitter is the chrome soft in the same distance category off of driver as a TP5x, zstar XV, or Prov1x. Especially at 125+ clubhead speed with serviceable impact alignments and smash factor. Easily 15 yards behind those options and sometimes more.

Chrome soft feels and responds like a marshmallow being hit with a whiffle ball bat while the other options feel like a juiced baseball off of shaved aluminum.

Completely agree. Seen it on trackman also, the chrome soft spins too much for the vast majority of the higher spin players. I found it quite a bit shorter off the driver and longer irons, 1/2 off mid irons, and just slightly shorter on short irons/wedges.

I'm on vacation here in the US and you lot confuse me, you get ripped off big time on food, drinks, tickrts, tipping, yet you only pay $4 per pro v when the rest of the world pays way more. The Pro v is by far and away the best selling ball at any store I have worked at yet it costs $89NZ ($65US) at home.. How can $4 per ball be considered expensive when you break down the cost of a round?

Good Lord, I hope that you don't have many water hazards on your home course.

I think when something is at the top price point in any category it's going to automatically be "expensive" with relativity considered for the entire category. Nature of the beast.

I wonder if the V stands for Velocity. They may be using the same core?

I tried the original Chrome a few years back when it first came out and while they felt great quit playing them due to a noticeable loss of distance off of the driver. Haven't tried them since but it seems as if that property hasn't changed.

Am I the only one who thought these were NOT soft? Thought the ball performed admirably: spun enough around the greens, seemed a bit hard coming in on full iron shots, flight was noticeably lower as advertised. That being said, I did not feel like this ball was soft at all.

i played a round with these yesterday.

hear are my thoughts. it is right up there with every other premium ball out there. it has mid high flight in my opinion. full shots it is fine, wedges and green side are just... OK. feels decent off the putter.

in my opinion it is slightly longer than the chrome soft x I currently play but does not spin near as well.

I can tell you one non debatable fact. Golf stores are paying $36+ cost for the AVX.

Which is why they’re $50 in stores that have them. If Titleist is smart these will be adjusted accordingly to other balls on the market come spring.

I think your right. I live in Miami and a few months ago some Japanese tourists played with us at a course by the airport. One gentleman had a bag of very expensive clubs, Honma and Muira but I noticed a black head cover for his driver which was a black Epic. I just assumed it was the Japanese Epic version. I retrieved a ball he hit in the water on a par three and apparently he was superstitious about playing a ball he hit in the water. He allowed me to keep it and I could swear it was the Prestige. I only tried it for a couple of holes before I went back to my Pro V 1. I don't recall anything special about it and I may still have it somewhere.

So they're going to price the AVX at an everyday price the same as the Christmas special ProV1/ProV1x price and roughly the same as the spring Loyalty promotion price. Love 'em or hate 'me Titleist is consistent in thinking any Titleist Urethane golf ball is worth $40/dozen, discounted, and $48/dozen at retail.

So from what I can gather, Titleist is repackaging a Japanese ball for the North American and European markets in an attempt to halt their sliding market share. They're also pricing it higher than several other leading competitors, presumably based on little more than the fact "it's a Titleist".

The hubris is strong with them.

Took the AVX for a test today alternating holes with my Chrome Soft Truvis , and while the AVX was not bad, it's didn't really shine in any one area. Felt very similar to the QST and for the price difference I cannot see why someone would pay $18 more for the name or because they offer yellow.

This stuff about repackaging a Japanese ball is the same as the guff about K-Sig...anonymous Internet forum posters making s*** up out of whole cloth.
