Did he choke?

He didn’t choke, but he didn’t exactly seize the day like the Tiger of old.

Remarkable that TW 1.0 never won from behind in a major. Guess it aint too easy.

In that respect, he kept the streak alive, lol.

This was a huge opportunity missed. Was one swing from possibly winning. But thats how it is.

I hope that after he kicks himself a few times. He looks in the mirror and gives himself a smile an a good word.

As you said, didnt seize the day. But he held his own on a Sunday in a major.

I have quoted the Curtis Strange interview many times. But give it time. Tiger started almost 40 years after Jack. Jack about 40 years after Jones. By that measure the next will be a rookie about 2037.

I think the next one will be Asian. Also think it's a little early to write off the likes of Spieth and McIlroy. Both of them have enormous talent and a ton of time on their side.

I predict a 700% increase in Tiger specific threads in WRX Tour Talk that are slight variations of each other.

I love these comments... Like him, love him or hate him we will never see a 14 time major champion in our life time. Appreciate what we have been fortunate to see over the last 20 years. he almost pulled this Open Championship off.

People said the same thing about Jordan. Then along came Lebron. They said the same thing about Sampras. Then along came Federer. They said the same thing about Montana. Then along came Brady. They said the same thing about Kasparov. Then along came Magnus Karlsson. They said the same thing about Nicklaus. Then along came Tiger. There's ALWAYS another transcendent player on the horizon. And he'll be here in your lifetime.

Nobody will break Gretzky's point record. Ever. The game has changed too much.

Golf has changed a lot as well. Overall strength of field is so much better than it has ever been. That will make it harder for someone to dominate at the same level of mega-stars of the past.

Gretzky has admitted he'd never have the career or success in the NHL he has if he played in the NHL today. I honestly don't think Jack wins 18 Majors if he played against the guys on Tour today.

Not sure team sports excellence is comparable to individual sports. In golf it's Jack and Tiger. The rest are a tier or more below. In tennis it's Federer and Nadal. Most great players aren't really transcendent; they're just consistently good over some period.

Why would team sports be any different? We're not talking team achievements here. LeBron has been on some god awful teams, he has still put up individual stats that are better than Jordan's. Ditto Brady over Montana. People made the exact same argument about Pete Sampras that people now make about Tiger. And within a decade Federer had become the new GOAT. Ditto Serena over Steffi. I can't name a sport in which the player considered the GOAT is not active now or wasn't active within the past 20 years. Can you? The point is "once in a lifetime" players don't exist. There's always someone better who comes along within 20 years or so.

Maybe because most team sports the stats are dependent on what the teams needs are?

Would Durant and Curry and Thompson score more if on a different team that needed their scoring?

PS goats. Gretzky (yeah he played in '99 so exactly 20 seasons ago)

Jack?

Sampras was thought to have set a major mark that might not get beat but was he ever really considered the goat?

Great players, the really transcendent ones, always shine no matter the caliber of team they're a member of. Magic and Bird played on some truly great teams yet they still were considered the best individual players in the league. For a four year stretch from 1984-1987 Bird was considered by many experts to be the GOAT. He won two titles and got to the Finals the other two years during that stretch. He played on some stacked teams but he still garnered transcendent accolades. Jordan's Bulls teammates were much better than they were given credit for (they only lost two more games during the season he went to play baseball) and yet he was almost unanimously considered the GOAT for decades till LeBron. I guess the point is you can be the GOAT no matter if you're on a team that sucks or a team that's stacked. Jordan was a better player than Bird and LeBron is a better player than Jordan. The bar is constantly being raised. It might take 10 years or it might take 20 years but eventually there's going to be someone who takes otherworldly talent and matches it with an otherworldly desire. And while this current crop of young golfers are busy Instagramming their Brocation in the Bahamas and bragging about how they're all buddies, the transcendent player will be on the range five hours a day building a game that will kick their a@@.

Tiger proved today that he can still compete. He has shown he has the speed, this week he showed that he also has the fineness and strategy IMO.

Heck, he played the golf course better than the overnight leaders.

He has taken his ability to show up and perform in tour events and applied it in a major championship, the only thing missing from the return is a win.

Where can I go get my back fused?

Maybe a bigger disappointment for Jordan, who could've won shooting even par today. TW started the round four back, was up against it all day. Hopefully he learned something about himself today, press onward. Game looks good.

There were a few who needed even par to win, but standing on the first tee they would all be thinking they need under par and couldn't play conservatively.

Tiger has never won coming from behind so I agree Spieth was certainly the big disappointment.

As normal, but Carnoustie has thrown up a no name winner.

For those naysayers or yaasayers on any of the golfers in question, do you get a prize if you are right? Cause all I can say is that was one bad Word not allowed tournament, in the good sense . I know I get nothing for that.

It's not too early to put them in the Jack Tiger debate. And they never will be. They may be in the debate of best of this era but they will both be well short of a Phil career. One or both will probably reach Phil's major total but neither will come close in career wins.

Tiger, I was rooting for you big time at the Open. When I saw you grab the solo lead, I was really hoping you would step on their throats like in the old days. But golf is golf and a funny game. I now you feel like you missed out on one, and perhaps you did. Just focus on the next one. Let's get to 80 wins whether it is a major or not.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

Spieth is 25. He has a ton of time to reach Phil’s victory total.

Did he choke?

No, he miscalculated. When he got to -7, he thought he needed to get to -9 to win. So, he pressed too hard when he didn't need to.

Dont think so. he stalled his round at the turn and was playing with fire from there in.Not from aggressive play but from loose shots which happened to everybody in the field except molinari and peperall. He made great up and downs from bunkers where he had perfect lies.it eventually caught up to him. if he didnt hit that fan on 12 it could have been a triple. Didnt take his medicine, got cute and made double. That was the ball game. He felt the heat so that might help him moving forward but who knows.

Its unfair to them for sure. I always thought of both had a chance for a watson career and still think Spieth gets there but hes certainly giving away some golden chances.Good news is hes getting regular chances regardless of form going into majors. He has that it factor in majors
