Is a vintage Ping anser, still relevant and effective?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

On a whim, I just bought a vintage Ping Anser, from Morton's Golf. Now, I'm thinking I probably just wasted $110.

Is that model still effective, compared to today's blade putters?

Thanks guys,

The anser (punny) is: if you can make putts with it, it is relevant. Or if you want to hang it on the wall.

Ping still produces the MgBr Scottsdale Ansers and MgBr Ansers, are you referring to those? They're great, no frills putters but pretty light by today's standards. A ton were produced, so a good deal could've been had on a mint used one, I'm sure.

They’re perfectly fine. Lighter than modern offerings, but some of us prefer that.

If it works it's relevant. I see them at Play It Again Sports for $15 and less quite often, but they feel too light for me. It's a timeless design, just like the Eye 2 irons. A lot of pros made a lot of $ with Ansers, so they work!

You can always find things cheaper, but Morton's is reputable and not too far away from the best prices.

I've often scrolled Morton's site checking out those old models that are still offered "new.". I'm still putting with a vintage Anser and really love it. I've thought about picking up one of the "new" original Ansers, but there's nothing wrong with my old one.

Bottom line, for $110 you can get a new, no frills putter that may very well still be in your bag in 20 years. There's not another new blade putter in that price point I'd rather own. Enjoy it!!

I’d agree with this! Before I joined Golfwrx, I used the same MgBr sound slot Anser for 13 years. Purchased it my freshman year in high school and made many putts with that thing. I’ve been on Golfwrx for 9 years now, and I’ve probably rotated 2 dozen putters through my bag. I’d be lying if I said any performed better than that old Anser. Many sounded better and felt better, but didn’t perform better. Still have that old Anser.

I had an older Anser come in to have the face milled, a few years ago. You can imagine that even though it was light when it came in, taking .015" off did nothing to ADD weight, right? I rolled it on the fitting mat before the customer came to pick it up and made 14 out of 16 twelve-foot putts. I'll be the first to admit that it was NOT the skill of the man rolling the putts.....but at the same time, it is seldom a piece of equipment makes a HUGE difference.

Long story short...........if it puts the ball in the hole, roll it until it does not work any longer. Karsten and his team did a fantastic job in their design and it works today, just as well as it did back when it was new.

Just one Mann's thoughts,

I’m in the same boat! I still have my MgBr sound slot as a backup! Sometimes whenever I can buy a putt I’ll rotate it in for a round or two to get back to basics and it seems to heal my putting.

It's the most successful putter of all time, both in terms of tour wins and copies by other makers. As long as you don't need a sightline and don't mind 20-30g lighter than modern models, it's still a superb putter, which also gives you plenty of feedback on the strike/contact you are making.

I've purchased a couple of original Ansers [ss and MgBr] from Morton's over the past couple of years. GREAT putters. I have also purchased high end putters from TP Mills, Scotty Cameron, Byron Morgan, Machine, Nike, Odyssey, Rife, Seemore, TM, Ping, etc. Sure, the original Pings are light when compared with modern day putters. So what? Who knows what weight is best for your stroke or local greens?

If I had to do it all over again, I would have made one purchase, the Ping MgBr Anser, and stuck with it. It's in my bag now, custom ordered through Morton's with top line sight line [normally naked]. Probably paid $140 all in. Could've saved myself thousands.

I just received my MgBr Anser back from Ping after they milled the face. Pics are on page 7 of the Ping Putter thread. It rolls the ball really well. This putter was in play for years and then spent some time just waiting to be rediscovered. It's in the bag again.

I play an Anser from the 1960s and over the years I've strayed on her at times by throwing modern (and expensive! dear god, are they expensive) putters in the bag only to quickly learn the error of my ways and put the tried and trusted back in. I throw on a PP58 Blackout grip every few years and it feels like new and performs like nothing else I've tried. My putting style performs best with a lighter flatstick so it works well for me.

Play what works!

My rotation consists of strictly older Ping models - MgBr Anser, Stainless Zing 2, and a G2 ZSB. Youngest one of the bunch is over 15 yrs old (ZSB) and the other 2 are considerably older models.

I'm not a fan of inserts, so always have leaned towards Ping for that reason. I've been able to find the right grip, length and lie for each (all are different). I've burned through a few different grips on 2 of them, but in my mind the low cost of each putter (less than $50 each that I've forked over) allows me a certain freedom in doing that.
