West Coast venues allow the US Open to be played in Prime Time for maximum ratings and advertising dollars.

Pebble Beach is the best course available to the USGA to host the US Open. There is no official US Open "rota" like the British Open. If they ever decide to make one, Pebble Beach will be the first course on the list. Sit back and enjoy seeing it host the US Open once every decade for the rest of your life.

Dang MG, does that mean you dislike every exclusive/expensive course out there? Or just Pebble Beach in particular? I live about 30 minutes from Augusta National but don't anticipate I'll ever get to play it, but would jump at the chance.

The course has to actually apply to host the US Open. The USGA then picks from what is available.

There are a ton of courses that are US Open worthy that will never host a US Open because the course doesnt want it there. Has Chambers Bay even fully recovered yet from its mutilation by the USGA back in 2015?

Just thinking out of the box here.............with the amount of money the USGA spends every year to screw up a course and as stated above, many courses don't want to host an Open, you would think that they would/should follow in the steps of ANGC and the Players and build their own course have the Open there.

I think, personally, they should just start a rota similar to what the R&A does.

I am ok with a few courses including pebble getting the nod more often. I just think that it should be followed by a relatively unknown.

Yes, you're right about the aspirational class and all that. But the course can provide a compelling championship.

There’s more to it than just applying...there’s a ton of course that could host a championship but can’t because of logistical problems. Parking, moving guests, ease of travel, sponsorship pavilions etc. Someone mentioned Brandon, never been there looks phenomenal but far to desolate I think. Same with streamsong because I thought someone suggested it (maybe not in this thread but somewhere else).

correct, I would like to see new'er or unknown courses show up every 3 years or so. I would love to see courses in the pacific northwest, or Arizona, Or Las Vegas, or where ever show up. There are a Ton of great courses that can be featured. I don't this to turn into bidding for locations like the Olympics, but I would love to see more courses.

The main problem I see with this pipe dream is, it takes way more than a great golf course design to host an event. You have to have room to set up grand stands, and tents, and have gallerias. a great event at a great course is not really the goal. $$ is the goal and if the course cannot handle selling thousands of tickets/day it will not be considered. I understand this, and I am not really complaining about it. I just think it is an unfortunate reality.

Just think about what the USGA could do with their own course, that is set up for large galleries. They then can also build upon the surrounding area with a USGA hotel and casino, a USGA mini mart, a USGA car rental, a USGA whatever..........they can corner the market on just about everything and then open the course at $500 a green fee for us mere mortals. They can then just move the HQ from stink-a-land Jersey and build grandiose mansions for themselves and gaze furtively at the minions who will traverse their hallowed fairways and toast each other, as the revenue exceeds their wildest expectations..........

The reason you'll never see Arizona, Las Vegas, Texas, etc host a US Open is it's in June. The occasional major at Southern Hills in Tulsa is about as hot of a location as you'll find for a US Open. The northern Midwest states as well as the coasts are great locations. You want population dense areas with easy access and big "ballparks" of courses for majors for all the spectators to get in an out of easily and safely.

Resorts like Bandon and Streamsong were never built with tournaments in mind, much less majors. They're great public venues that were built with a different purpose in mind.

I complete agree and understand this point. it is just a bit unfortunate as it would be fun to see some of these locations played.

Watching golf at Pebble Beach without the likes of Bill Murray and Kenny G is always excellent!

Factoring June weather, Northwest or coastal courses in CA would be ideal such as PB and LACC (very exclusive private club in West LA, neighboring with Riviera). However, I wish many other clubs in the area applies for the US Open such as Aviara, La Costa, Del Mar, Pasatiempo, Half Moon, Sherwood, Industry HIlls, etc.

Olympic Club, Torrey Pines ( although boring) or perhaps Harding Park ( Too short?) are other west coast options for mid June. Oregon may have something in the greater Portland area and then there's a couple of coursed in Washington: Sahallee and Chambers Bay ( don't start! LOL).

The US Open has been played in Texas 3 times: 1941 at Colonial in Fort Worth, 1952 at Northwood in Dallas, and 1969 at Champions in Houston. You never know, the USGA might elect to go to Texas again.
