New TM p790 irons ???

Recommended Posts

Really worried about them changing the tungsten weight in the new P790.

They used to have the weight in the toe, but now they have a slim weight in the bottom of the club to provide higher launch.

In my ears that sound like less penetrating flight and more balloons in the air. The original P790 already had enough launch (and more than it needed).

Bargain!

Not.

Seriously, the reviews have to be way better than Callaway Epic Forged to even pass the sniff test. I’ll wait a season for the inevitable price drop, or see if Ti will be a surprise guest appearance in ksouth@ebay :D

Are you referencing the Ti? Because the new regular 790s are 21 degrees in the 4 iron.

All of the manufacturers are trying to get a piece of the ultra-premium iron category. TM with P790ti; Callaway with Epic Forged; Titleist with Concept 01 and 02.

Meanwhile, PXG is introducing “cheaper” irons to keep their business model supportable.

I was initially worried about this as well, but I think the 2017 P790 also had, according to the description on the website, "strategically placed internal metal-injection-molded (MIM) tungsten weighting" in addition to the toe screw. So my best assumption is that the weighting on the new models is very similar to the originals. But if they've done something to make these go even higher, that's problematic - I hit mine high enough as it is!

One of the videos stated they had "inverted cone technology" whatever that is. But they're saying each club has different speed foam placement or something, so perhaps they tune the launch that way.

He's definitely entertaining. He was crushing the 790s, but they all stopped on the green. Didn't hit any fliers from what I saw.

I don’t think the weight was in the toe. It was round and in the middle.

Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) is TaylorMade's face construction technology that they added to metal woods in the early 2000s. It allows for them to preserve ball speed as you get farther from the face, thus enlarging the sweet spot. Basically, they're controlling the amount of thickness on the backside of the face to manipulate ball speed across the face. It's been on many irons in the past and you can see it on the backside of the r7 line. it looks like a little donut.

On the new P790, they modified ICT to match the new iron. This donut was made a little shallower to distribute more evenly and then they shifted it to the toe side a little because of how the irons are made. The net result is a club that should perform more similar across the face, whether they're toe or heel side mis-hits.
