Hi WRX,

 

Since we are a group of generally like minded individuals, I think it's time to play a little game of "Would You Rather" equipment edition.

 

Would you Rather - Play one set for a season and lower your handicap **_OR_** Experiment all season have scores all over the place BUT... Shoot your personal best score ever?

I've done the second and continue to employ that technique.

I have 12 sets of irons, picked up a set of Callaway Apex Pro '19 irons. in 2 days I shot my first ever even par 71 round(with a hole in 1(My 4th)) and followed it up the next day with a "should have been better" 74.

I’d rather have a season of lower scores, thus lowering my handicap.

 

I’ve done the other approach a couple of times. The scoring inconsistency drove me nuts.

I'd rather have a new personal low, playing to your handicap consistently (71-74 on my course) sounds great but gets very frustrating/monotonous. That once a year hot round (currently 66) stands out way longer for me and is more exciting.

I'm a 2.1 handicap who has never broken par on 18... GIVE ME THAT UNDER PAR SCORE ~feverishly grabs 1-2 random clubs out of each bag at the bag drop~

I’ve been experimenting the last season and a half and have shot my lowest score. Going to try to play this set all next season (might change wedge shafts for OCD matching reasons.... maybe my hybrid and 3 wood too...) let the experimenting continue lol

I play a lot of golf, so I'd rather have the consistent scoring. I've pretty much settled my bag this year, and my index is at a 25-year low.

Season of consistency with lower scores. Expectations coming off an end to the season where I got into the 60's twice (tho high 60s) for the first time ever made me lose interest in playing really quickly when things didn't pan out as I wanted/anticipated even with playing and practicing far more.

I joke and say it made the game too easy. But honestly (joking again), I’ve been married and faithful to 1 woman for 20 years, in golf I at least get to enjoy a variety of challenging partners......but seriously, I like being able to play all of my vintage/modern sets and my hdcp stays between 3 - 7 regardless.

 

No illusions of being on the Champions tour, don’t really gamble, I just play for the pure pleasure and challenge.

 

The really honest answer is that I love Blades and didn’t want to lose my membership card by actually proving that cavity backs were superior......(again, joking).....Blades for life!!!

I would rather play a single set up all year and shoot consistently better golf of which I have done this year. Have my set up dialed in at all 14 clubs and have lowered hdcp by two strokes.

 

However, I cannot help but to go to the stores and hit different irons and woods. I am trying to resist the urge to change.

I've learned it's mostly the archer, not the arrows, been playing pretty much same clubs for past few years. I can shoot 70 or 90 with them, I blame 'golf is hard' and how much we drink during the round for poor scores.

I have done the second option for years. I am hopeful to try the first option now. I feel I have everything set except the putter.

My problem is I've never made a bad swing in my life. So if the ball isn't going where I want it then it must be the club. So I dump it and get a new one. If these damn club companies would make better clubs that do what I tell them to I wouldn't have to keep replacing them.

I play 2 years with the same irons and 2 years with the same driver. So keep it consistent is key. Ive shot my PB this way

Well seeing as I’ve gone through 24 sets of irons and the pro at my club always (every day) checks my bag for new toys I choose b. I’m probably never going to get to a competitive scratch level and that’s ok. I just really enjoy the game and tinkering. Bought a loft lie machine this year and that’s been the great enabler.

 

I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer unless you make your living with a golf club.

Pretty tried all types of clubs, shafts & manufacturers. Now I’m striving for consistency by playing the same set as much as possible. Tinkering with the golf ball still, with an occasional long iron replacement experiment.

I would rather every club manufactured right handed be available left handed in every bounce, grind, finish option. Looking at new wedges and it is embarrassing how few options we have to choose from in comparison to a right hander.

I would play one set for a season and hopefully lower HDCP.

 

I prefer to experiment (change one thing and see if it helps) rather than using trial and error and hoping I find the magic club. And, I have pretty well settled into Callaway and Tour Edge as my preferred club makers - their clubs just seem _to fit my eye._

 

That said, I sample most of the OEMs at demo days and expos to see what's out there. I just don't feel compelled to buy this and that on a lark.
