Your most unpopular Golf opinions?

Alignment aids need to be removed from the game. The amount of time I see people placing their ball on the green and replacing it because their stupid line they drew on the golf ball won't sit exactly perfect wastes so much god damn time it drives me nuts. I'm going to put a hit on the a-hole that designed the triple track ball and putter combo.

Practice Swings should also be outlawed. Nothing is worse than playing with someone who takes 3-4 practice swings before every shot and then shoots a 95. That's 380 golf swings in one round. If that player saved all that energy they would probably have the strength to hit a lot better shots to begin with.

It won't affect you Americans much will it? New index every day instead of twice a month and the average of the 8 best instead of 10 giving you a slightly lower index. No big deal. Or?

Hey chopper, what are you hitting there?

I enjoy walking too, but I am glad there are carts as there are those people who couldn't play the game without a cart: seniors, people with some kind of disability, etc. Not to mention some courses simply don't lend themselves to walking. But yeah, I think healthy people might derive more benefit from the game by walking.

Who said anything about enjoying walking? I never seen a course that doesn't lend itself to walking. All professional tours are walked to my knowledge. I agree about carts for seniors and disabled as well as a numerous other reasons that people shouldn't have to provide. The original question was about unpopular opinions. I said golf is a walking game and carts are ruining the game. I expect at least 50% to disagree as the question states. The impatient and rude people I see flying through various courses on carts don't look senior or disabled to me. I often see people in their 60s carrying clubs with people younger than 40s in carts

Courses vary wildly in walkability. If you haven't seen an "unwalkable" course yet, it's because you just have not played it.

The course I play at, which was built in the 90's, has multiple long, hilly stretches between holes. There's no way around the conclusion that it was built for cart golf. I don't like it, but that's the case.

I also grew up playing at a course in New England that was built in the late 1800's. You can walk it without breaking a sweat, and that's what many of the members do.

Drinking should be outlawed (and strictly enforced) on Muni courses.

My local one is right next to my house and I can't tell you how many 5+ hour weekend rounds I have to endure because people are just wasted and slow and obnoxious.

I don't think a fast golfer is slowed by an alignment aid on his ball. I never used one until last year when I started taking my putting more seriously and I doubt it adds more than 4-5 seconds kneeling down and putting it in place. You can't gripe about that. It's imperceptible. What I think you're complaining about are guys who take forever to putt in general. That's definitely a problem everywhere. There are a lot of groups that play reasonable quickly except for the year they take on the green acting like every putt is to win the US Open.

Maybe it would help if we did away with marking your ball on the green entirely?

In all but the rarest case, it's not necessary anyway. This practice of constantly marking your ball's position with a coin, picking it up, walking away, waiting and then walking back only to replace your ball when the last guy finished putting it stupid unless there's a hunk of mud on the ball.

Or we could take a super progressive stance and do something crazy like saying that from the second people step on the green everyone has 10 seconds to mark their balls position, wipe the balls off and replace them before everyone putts out. That would be awesome actually.

It's more than 4-5 seconds. I'm talking about the a-hole who sets their ball down, it rocks to one side or the other maybe a half a millimeter and they pick it up and reset it multiple times until it doesn't move and then they hover their hand over it for a few more seconds until they are certain it's in place. This process takes a lot of time and when you multiply it by 30 putts per round and multiple perople in the group going through the same procedure. Say it's only 10-15 seconds x 4 players. That's 40-60 seconds per putt per group per hole. That's 12-18 minutes added onto a round at 10-15 seconds, but I would venture guess I'm being very generous at 10-15 seconds for the entire procedure. It's probably more than that.

Tack on the extra practice swings I'm talking about as well that probably take the same amount of time and it's easy to see how a round of golf loses a half hour or more per round based on these two items alone.

I will not tell you how to play the game, but I walk always when allowed. Not many courses here in Melbourne (Australia) that do not allow walking. I have played in SE Asia a fair bit and walk when allowed. It gets hot here in Melbourne (but not usually very humid) and I characterise the temperatures in terms of litres of water. A cool day is 1-1.5 litres weather, a warm day is a two litre weather, a hot day is a three litre weather and the hottest days (100 degrees F or so) are a four litre weather (a gallon is 3.75 liters). That's the minimum amount of water I drink during the round plus also hydrate myself before the round. I do set the water intake target so that for example by leaving 6th green I must have finished my (first) one-litre bottle. Sometimes I add a bit of sports drinks to counter the sweating. Ten 8 Oz cups is a bit less than 2.5 litres, not sure that's enough on a hot and humid day.

I also find that when I ride, my swing is no good. It's not that great to start with so I need all swing life support I can get. Somehow the walking keeps the muscles warm and the swing more fluid. Sitting down in a cart, then just whacking the ball, sitting down again, etc. usually produces very poor swings and a sore back.

Edit: For the record, here walking means hauling the clubs in a pull cart, not carrying them. Makes it a fair bit easier to walk in comparison to carrying the clubs.

Muscleback irons are very very ugly. The best looking irons, are not even irons, but those Cleveland and Adams hybrid iron set things.Forget Pinehurst or St. Andrews, the REAL spiritual home of golf is Myrtle Beach.Everyone should use their 58* or higher wedge to chip from the collar of the green instead of wimping out and using their putter.

Nobody games golf equipment. If you’ve ever used the word game that way I’m embarrassed for you. Golf was better before Tiger Woods. TV golf isn’t that bad. Quit complaining. The majors are the only tournaments that matter. The U.S. Open is the most boring majorThere is no such thing as the U.S. Masters or the U.S. PGA Championship. “Tiger Woods won the Masters!” ”Oh really? Which one?” said no one ever.
