New 2020 Callaway Chromesoft

Putting is a very important element of my game and I spent an hour with the 2020 CS at the practice green and came away unimpressed with the CS. It seemed to lack any kind of feel off the putter. It was very difficult for me to judge distance so I was either leaving them short or hitting them long.

Game has ben the Z Star but recently switched to the 2020 Tour B RX.

Unlike data from a club, ball data is not that variable to swing in my experience. A ball that spins more than a prior generation for someone else has a good probability of spinning more for me as well. I have a Sim at home and have seen this having people over.

The 2019 Triple Track version is what I was referring to in my original question.

Was your time putting on the green the only trial run you spent with the CS? Last summer I spent about 2-3 weeks playing the CS and CSx instead of my regular ProV1x's and saw great results related to feel and spin of the golf ball (i might argue it is too soft and spins too much lol). Maybe i've spent too much time in quarantine, but I just thought it was interesting that feel from the putter face would overrule how the golf ball felt or performed from tee to green.

I have this weird theory of playing CS or CSx's when it is hot dry and fast. Then will play ProV's if it is wet, windy, etc.

Played Friday with the 2020 Chromesoft TT in yellow. A few observations:

1) I putted great. Loved the feel... not sure if it was a combination of TT on the putter (Triple Track 10) and ball, but I had 30 putts, which was really good for me.

2) Driving distance was hard to quantify, as the course was fairly wet. I was landing the ball in my usual spots. If anything I was slightly longer than i was with last years CS x TT. One thing I did notice is that my misses were measurably better (right/left) than they were with the 2019 chromesoft x TT.

3) I was flying the ball about 5 yards further with my irons. I was also able to flight the ball like I would expect from a premium ball.

4) Felt nice and soft, with above average spin into and around the greens. Fairways were wet Zoysia.... Will be curious to see how it performs on my home courses bentgrass.

Overall I am liking it better than the 19 CS x TT.

  • 3 weeks later...

My on course testing with the CS2020 was less than acceptable. Driver was consistently shorter than with my normal game ball - Z Star.

I found that iron shots, especially those into the wind, were ballooning regularly and coming up short.

Feel was good off driver and irons, but the loss of distance was a turnoff.

Feel off the putter was good, but not any better than the Z Star.

Proves each to their own. I've always found Z-Star to lack feel, distance and though I've tried a few model years, I always ended up giving them away.

As has been said, no ball will fit everyone the same. I find the 2020 CS to be outstanding. I have hit some of my longest drives in many, many years on a fairly consistent basis. Since putting this ball in play my "typical drive" as determined by Game Golf has gone up just over 10 yards and, for me, it performs very, very well into the wind, even a cold North wind. I don't see "balooning" with the irons though it is a high launch and carry ball but that is no different than the Callaway ERC Soft and 2nd gen CS I had been playing. I've always hit the ball high with my irons.

Going to give the 2020 CS another chance today. On my round Friday, on one hole I had a chance to hit the 2020 CS and my gamer Z Star. The difference in driver distance was negligible... much to my surprise. I did a little short game work with the 2020 CS yesterday and was very pleased with the way it performed when chipping into the green and putting. Hopefully, it will live up to the billing today.

As a TT CSX player last year, I've been impressed with the 2020 CS. Feel is definitely softer than the 2019 CSX, but it performs admirably in the wind and his some pop off nearly every club. It feels like every aspect of that ball has improved. Now I just need to spend some time comparing it to the CSX when they're available down my way.

What a tour player plays should not equate into your ball choice. Many of the Titleist players play different year/generations of ProV1 from 2014-2020 depending on what they like. I am sure it is the same with other brands as well. And when the PorV1 came out and was 42 a dozen in 2000 and is now 47 just tells me they may have been drastically overpriced back then. I know guys who would walk 3 feet out of their way to pick up a dollar climbing throoooough bushes to retirieve one that went awry.

I like the Truvis and have played the CS and enjoyed it. But I am not looking for "3 extra yards off the tee" Not a long hitter just aim for fairways. It has played well orounf the greens and I can find it easier (yello) Will try he new one. JMHO put if you are comlpaining over 3 dollars a dozen at the mid to high 40 dollar a dozen price point do you just change balls every 2 holes or just lose a lot?

Just seems odd when many on this forum change shafts and equipment like they change shoes. What do I know? probably nothing
