theres a laundry list of players who take over a minute to hit a golf ball

That was my favorite part. I don't know if it was because he wasn't great... but it felt similar to me on the course

I thought it was ok. Definitely not polished like a typical broadcast and some gaffs ( Sands with an up close interview with DJ, then later reminding both DJ and Rory on social distancing, Wolfe with the “I wonder if they will test me” comment after his bomb on 16, Bill Murray??), but all and all a nice break with some live golf and a ton of cash going to charity. Interesting that TM’s biggest retailers also chipped in and Farmers upping the bonus pool. Nice to see a $1M in phone in donations. The occasional trash talk was neat too.

it was pretty much Rory vs Ricky, with Ricky playing better overall but Rory coming up clutch.

side note - was Ricky using a hunting Bushnell scope rather than a typical golf laser scope?

 

Edit- now that I look it appears he was using a V5 scope. Different profile than the V4...

my bad, i read your 2nd sentence as even though the option is there for the player, utilizing a caddie still causes slow play. I work out on tour as caddie so I'm biased against people who are negative towards us, but there are too many players who are slow.

Really hard to see contours in tv. Pinehurst in real life is insanely sloped green but on tv you’re like yea yea turtle back just chip it up there dude. Ummmm no it’s like 6-7 feet up!

i don't think the commercials were typical "tv timeout" like in other sports (holding up live play to ensure a minimum number of commercials aired).

It was more the ads fufilled the dead time inbetween shots (breaking down camera setup, walking up to next location, and setting back up again).

second 4some could help reduce some of the time, but would also require a second camera crew. tape delay would probably be the best compromise.

love the team TM/titleist/callaway/cobra idea. would the OEMs do it though?

The ads were clearly holding up play. There were a number of times where the players asked the crew if it was OK to hit as they came back from commercials.

JT doesn't use any TaylorMade equipment or balls. Their sponsor players include Rahm, Day and Morikawa. Rahm couldn't fly in, not sure about the others.

Absolutely loved watching Rickie and Rory play. You can tell they are absolute players and they make the game look so easy. You barely even notice that Rickie shoots 5 or 6 under. I also enjoyed watching DJ and Wolff struggle. Not that I wanted them to play bad or hate them, it's just nice to see that even the best in the world get rusty and need to practice to be the best. My struggles coming out of winter are normal even to pros.

I thought the course was great and I know the tv didnt show how awesome it truly is due to cameras on the ground and not in towers.

One thing that I would've changed would be what we were showed. I would have wanted mic'd up conversation in between shots instead of cutting to commercials after every set of drives.

 

I would absolutely love to see different club sponsors set up 2 man teams and go against each other. Titleist vs Ping, Taylormade vs Callaway, Cobra vs Srixon, etc. Tuesday matches on a course before the tournament for charity would add a little spark to the week with a running total of money won for charity to add a little season long competition. The draw to this would be mic'd up conversation and fun matches instead of the seriousness of final group on Sunday.

Fully agree with you on that last. I do wonder though...all of the posts saying players are too slow...have you ever in your life played for you and your families sustenance? Known that if you missed the cut you made zilch? Played for a $1m prize? I am guessing most would slow down at least a bit. Can not afford to hit one careless shot and feed your family.

I know some will say tour players have backup income. And yes,the best do. But how do you think they got to that position? On tour they cannot pump one OB and just laugh and say “gimme a double”. They have to play it out no matter what.

I understood that at least 2 of them were members but despite that, green reading was way off at times. I assume these guys play\practice there without caddies, right? Guessing they really were rusty and not just BS’ing each other as a built-in excuse. I wondered about the “fast” play as well. Showed Rickie whipping out his laser on several holes, getting the number, grabbing a club and firing away. As Creedo said, this was a casual round, played with someone else’s money so...

The course is definitely Florida style. Like Medalist but on the ocean. We’ve got a place at PGA Village in St Lucie and miss the tricked up Fazio and Dye courses when I come back to the mid-Atlantic. I’m guessing courses up here don’t get enough play to spend major bucks on moving dirt or maintaining hundreds of bunkers.

I was thinking that showing this and The Match on an hour or two delay so the players don't need to wait on the tv cameras might be a good idea.

Then I saw how much people were betting on the live golf, so I think they will stick with live golf.

I don't see how a caddy could slow a player down. If anything they help speed them up.

 

There's certainly some guys that are chronically slow. Without a caddy they'd probably have a longer drawn out discussion between their ears.
