Rory swinging a Ventus black

So he’s going to be just as accurate swinging faster? Damn I bet he wishes he’d thought of that before

A guy named Tiger split ways with his coach about 20 years ago. His coach wanted him in the fairway and Tiger would have rather been in the rough and 20+ yards ahead of the field. It worked out ok for Tiger.

Rory doesn't need this to outdrive DeChambeau. It's very overlooked, but he still the longer driver at the US US Open. In fact Bryson's distance is generally overstated IMO. He is a lot longer than he used to be, but he isn't the longest player on tour. He just happens to have picked up distance and maintained a very strong all around game at the same time... He's just a really good golfer.

Some US Open stats:

Rory for the week - 328.1 avg

Bryson for the week - 325.6 avg

https://www.usopen.com/stats/player-stats.html#!driving-distance

Rory even led the field in strokes gained off the tee that week. Rory was 6.96 to Bryson's 5.38.

If Rory wants to win at Augusta it's all of the other parts of his game that he should be working on.

The fairways at the US Open were running like crazy, I don't think it's the greatest comparison. Bryson seems to be set up to maximize carry, which will play well at Augusta. Prior to the US Open his strokes gained for approach wasn't great but he was still putting up good results, it's not like the distance hasn't helped. I do agree that Rory getting longer or chasing distance won't make up for his other faults though.

Saw this and its the exact setup I moved into a month or two ago. Playing 45.5 SIM with Ventus V Black 7x. Feels awesome and I liked the heavier driver shaft coming from years of lighter shafts. Wish I was as consistent as Rory. I'm still getting use to how it frames the ball. The driver comes off much wider at address when in reality, the face is like 3/4 of what the crown is. Resulted in setting up to the ball off the toe and hitting some really bad toe shots. So much so, that at my SS  it eventually caused the carbon fiber crown to blow off.

I'm curious why so many pros are playing the Black 7x versus the 6x.  I'm also curious how much the tour guys are tipping these.

It is interesting. I went 6x as I thought the stiffness would counteract the drop in weight from my current 7x Tensei and maybe let me pick up some speed.

That's actually part of the reason I sold my 7x - I swung it 4 - 6 mph slower than my 60 gram shafts (though I kinda regret selling it tbh).

Rory was historically a 70 gram driver shaft guy (at least from my memory). Any idea why he would be testing the 60g VB and not the 70? Debating one of these and I generally prefer 70g driver shafts as well.

I'm guessing that he's thinking much like myself, that you could pick up some speed with the lighter shaft whilst not sacrificing any stability due to the strongerpitch 70 ton carbon fibre

Care to share what he is tipping it? I've seen you recommend 1" as a starting point, but I know he used to tip his KK XT 70TX 1.5".

Unfortunately we don't have that information at this time as he was trying a few different options. Additionally, tipping and other club build specs on Tour is not something we like to share publicly, but sometimes an OEM (like TM) will do so.

With VENTUS in particular, more than most any other shaft we've produced, the tip is so stiff already that we recommend against any tipping for most players. Some shafts with weaker tip sections need more like 1.5" but that is not the case with Ventus blue or black. Tour tipping standard is pretty much always 1" though...it's just one of those traditions they've been doing for decades it seems regardless of the shaft type.

60g vs 70g can come down to a number of factors for sure, including preference. Most often players do pick up speed by going down in weight for sure. But yes, the 6-X is plenty strong for even the strongest players on Tour.

60g in drivers has been most popular on Tour. For example, according to the Darrell Survey at the Sanderson Farms event, for DRIVER SHAFTS there were 11 guys in 60g, 8 in 70g and 2 in 80g.

No worries! Just curious of what he was trying. I find it entertaining to see what it takes to support the kind of swing speeds those guys make!

I game the Ventus black 7x in my SIM Max driver and ventus blue 8x in my SIM 15 degree.  Ventus black gave me the best numbers among the 14 different shafts I tested when I got fitted recently.  The next 2 shafts behind the ventus black were the tensei white and tensei av raw white/orange which ironically Rory gamed in the past.  I'm not surprised he made the switch.  Ventus black fits golfers who hit up on the ball and have too much back spin.

Say what you will, VENTUS is the shaft if the year.  Period.  End of story.

Michael Thompson wins 3M with it.  Fleetwood bags it; Rose; Berger wins with it and now Sergio who is a long time MRC user.

This shaft is special.  Would be surprised if Rory DOESNT have it in the bag when he returns.

FUJI did something special here; there’s no doubt.

Shaft of the year for sure, but what about one of the best ever?

Ventus Black and Ventus Red with "Velocore" = GO surprisingly FAR....

Since taking up the game, of all the driver shafts I have played, Ventus Red "S" is #1, followed by Fujikura Fuel Tour Spec 60, and Grafalloy Blue (63g) "S".  However, Ventus has had the largest impact on my game.  I really like the other two shafts too, except I was younger and swinging harder.

Surprisingly, Fujikura Ventus Red 5, (59g) "S" with Velocore, keeps this 70yr old in the game.

PS; if it doesn't say Velocore on the shaft, it's a copy.

It's not the same shaft, but trading on the shafts "Velocore" aftermarket success.  Big difference between the two.

Yes I know.  I have a Ventus black 7x in my driver and ventus blue 8x in my 3 metal they are both velocore.  It's Fuji's patented process that supposedly tightens dispersion on mis hits.  I've tested the stock ventus on with the SIM those spun way more.
